Marriage cert help!!

gemchoo, 16 May, 2010 at 19:11 Posted on Planning 0 6

When we went to register with the minister we had to provide details of our fathers names etc for the marriage cert.

Trouble is... i really dislike my birth father with an absolute passion, he hasn't been in my life for the last 13 years so i really do not want to put his name on there. I have a fab step dad who i think of as my 'dad' but as he didn't legally adopt me i'm not allowed to use his name.

i refuse to use the birth fathers name but i've been told the only other option is to leave my fathers details blank - this looks like i don't know who my dad is!

Surely in 2010 i'm not the only girl who's experience this. Does anyone know how i can get round this and have my 'dad's' name on there??

Please help!! i'm one gutted B2B about this right now!

Thanks

Gem xx

I left mine blank. It's so bloody old fashioned anyway and they didn't blinking ask about my mum did they? Father's occupation made me laugh. What happens if he was a stripper? Would they put that down? - Sorry rant over. Not a fan of the archaic system we still have in this country.

I can understand that you want to honour the one who's been the real father to you, but hardly anyone is actually going to see that document so it doens't really matter. You know in your heart who he really is.

No idea if you can put someone else's name on it - worth an ask as they don't ask for any proof as far as I know. Good luck hun!

I may be wrong but I am sure you can put a step dad on the marriage certificate now - I did a quick google and it is down to the Registration of Marriages (Amendment) Regulations 2007 but I think they have to have been married to your mother (still old fashioned!).

http://www.peterboroughdiocesanregistry.co.uk/marriage.html - first link that came up.

I'd contact your local registrar and ask.

Bec1234 is absolutely correct. If your step=father is married to your mother you may record his details. Unfortunately, vicars/priests etc are often a little behind the times so you may have to remind them.

Gemchoo - glad it helped. I remembered reading it on the registrar documentation I had, our local registrars were quite thorough! Just a pity I forget other facts that are essential!!!
