Marrying a US citizen?

3d jewellery, 23 September, 2009 at 19:24 Posted on Planning 0 4

Anyone know what the rules and procedures are. One of my friends has returned from a 4 month stay in the US totally head over heels with an American who wants to marry her.I'm sure it won't be the easiest thing

It's not the getting married part that is hard, it's getting the paperwork sorted out for living together here, or in the US. When I went thru this 9 years ago, it was a little easier, and alot less expensive to do. If she plans to move there to live, the process is time consuming, but can be done. A good friend of mine just arrived to marry her fiance and live there. The get married tomorrow actually, lol. She went thru many months of waiting for the paperwork to go thru, then had to be interviewed at the US embassy in London, have police records looked up, medical examination, and then the final interview before she and her two children were granted the necessary papers.

The best place online to hear other's expirences and get advice is https://www.visajourney.com/forums

    Best of luck to her,

It's my pleasure, when I was in the same position, I was so clueless, so it is nice to be able to help someone else facing the same thing. Smiley smile

I'm marrying my US OH in two months. We gave ourselves 6 months and its been really quite stressful. We were told it was easier if we got married here so he's had to get a fiance visa from the British Consultate in LA. We messed it up the first time as we tried to avoid solicitors fees and do it ourselves, but after the rejection we let the lawyers do it and it took 12 hours for it to be approved. He had to provide all his passports, six months worth of bank statements endorsed by the bank, six months worth of salary slips, again endorsed by the firm's HR department, a copy of my passport, a letter from me, evidence of the wedding going ahead - all the original receipts and photos in support. We gave notice on Monday and only once we'd done that could we breath easy. I now feel as if the big hurdles are over and we can enjoy the rest of the planning. I'm not sure of the process of how I get my visa I must admit but we're getting the lawyers to sort that out for us, but I've heard its a long process - but as I'm not moving out until June next year I do not mind too much. Good luck to your friend.

Best wishes on getting thru the process Jill,, you know it must be love to put yourselves thru all this, lol. I remember being so stressed out, especially entering the country on my fiance visa, because when the British Embassy sent it to me after it was approved (the second time), they put in the wrong visa, and put in a spousal visa instead! They caught the mistake when I was entering the country, and I had to explain over and over every time I reentered, why I had two spousal visa's in my passport. Ugh! it's all worth it once it's done, it's just alot hoops to jump thru.

We have been married for nearly 8 years now, and after being marrried for 2 years, it's a fairly easy process to get things sorted to move back to the States. But at least while you guys are here, you will be able to work, and feel secure.
