Maybe done before - what's everyone's jobs?

Kat Furlong , 21 October, 2015 at 20:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 35

Sorry if this has been done before!

I'm being nosy and wondered what everyone does for a living?

I am a project manager and run the national child car seat campaign ?

I'm now on early retirement and a lady of leisure however until a few years ago I was a payroll manager for a recruitment company but went back to being a PA for a few years when I wanted an easy life. So last job was PA to a NHS director at a mental hospital.

Wow, you all have such impressive jobs.

I'm a receptionist for a hyperbaric unit. Not terribly exciting, but I see some pretty exciting things!

I'm a temp assistant accountant at a Land Rover/Jaguar showroom. Not the most exciting of jobs, but I least I get to look at pretty cars! And maybe drive one if I get taken on permanently!

I have 3 jobs, my main full time one is in Sales for an IT company that sells equipment to stop hackers. I'm also a PA to a disabled gentleman, driving him around to work, shopping and making his and his wife's dinner. Then at the weekend I'm a Home Carer, in my spare time (not that I have much of that) I'm Mummy to 4 cats Smiley smile x

I'm a senior dispatcher for a Facilities Management company. .. which is just a very fancy version of "planning engineers workloads" haha!

8 years of organising everyone has stood me on good stead for sorting my big day out. I'm a wedding planning ninja... **sobs into a glass of wine as cannot decide on flowers**

I agree rockabird! Thought being a project manager, this wedding thing would be easy! Although me and h2b have agreed or easily compromised on everything, I'm still more stressed about this than my job!

Hyperbaric like the bends? I think that's interesting. Can't it be used to heal broken bones faster too?

    Yes, that's right! :-)

We do non-healing wounds, diabetic ulcers, amputations, and we have loads of cancer survivors and we're helping to heal their bones before surgery to remove the bits that have died. But I'm only the receptionist here. I guess I make people smile as they come into the building. That's an important job! :-)

When you're going through that having someone make you smile is as important as the treatment. So you have a REALLY important job. Be proud of every single one of those smiles.

CornishBride89 - I've never heard of that, but agree with Jayne that it is so important to have your job - you want someone to make you smile and put a little 'OK' into your day when you're going through hell Smiley heart

Kat Furlong yes it is such a nice feeling. I've been in jobs I hate and it really affects your life. I wouldn't mind trying out some of the cars you get to drive! (Seen it on a previous post!)

When I was living in the UK I worked in marketing and business development for early stage tech startups, and was a founding employee of a few companies. When I relocated to the US I got a job in strategic communications for the military in Washington DC. It's my job to raise awareness on issues like PTSD, sexual assault, substance abuse, and domestic violence, and make sure our servicemembers and their families know where to go to get the help they need. I'll move back to the UK after I get married and I hope to work in an environment that's a little more relaxed. It's nice to know that I'm helping people, but the government work culture is a little bit too rigid for me. I'm not sure if I will even continue with marketing, but I'm still trying to figure out what I can transition into without having to start over completely.

I am based in NZ and work as a coordinator for a Family Violence Prevention Network. We do everything from Primary Prevention Campaigns (Communitiy Mobilisation activities to change social norms) media work, local and national governmental lobbying to providing information, advice, advocacy, training and capacity building to 'front-line' agencies both governmental and non governmental.

The good news for you Mrs P (if you were interested in staying in this field when you move back to the UK) is that most of this work is undertaken in the NGO sector. It's a little less well coordinated in the UK than it is in NZ so it's not easy for me to direct you to one particular agency doing the work, it will differ from area to area but http://www.safelives.org.uk/ might be a good place to start for the domestic/sexual violence services.
