Menu issues

Mrs Allan-to-be, 26 June, 2014 at 21:14 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hi Smiley smile

We're having major issues deciding on the main course for our menu. It's a sit down meal and we're restricted by budget with our wedding package so have a choice of salmon or mustard pork. There is a beef option also but this would be at a considerable supplement.

Family all have pretty big opinions about what we should go for, all which seem to differ! OH is keen on salmon, I don't have a clue what people might like as I'm veggie!

These options all seem a bit tricky, there's no safe chicken choice so I've no idea what's best to keep the majority of people happy.

Advice would be greatly appreciated!xxxx

If they are your only choices and you can only have one then I'd go for pork tbh. I'd personally prefer salmon as not a pork fan but I think more people would eat pork than salmon. So many people don't like it.

but I would ask to see if people could be given a choice or could you offer pork or beef and hope many choose the pork. IDK it's a tough one because I wouldn't choose either and would go for beef and try and negotiate something with the price if it's too expensive. We chose beef or turkey as playing it safe lol.

I'd probably go for the salmon but then I'm allergic to mustard! Smiley smile

I don't like either salmon or pork so I'd go with the beef. They're tricky choices as I know a lot of people that don't like salmon or pork or don't eat red meat etc. I know you're never going to please everyone but these options do sound tricky. How come there's so little choice? Is there any room for negotiation?

Thanks for all the advice Smiley smile It's so difficult! The guests only get one option which we have to decide on beforehand. I think there's so little choice cos of the wedding package we've gone for unfortunately. We have tried negotiating but that's when they came up with the beef option for a supplement. I know we'll never keep everyone happy but I don't even know what most people will like, lol. No safe options!

Is there a reason they wont offer a chicken option? I personally would eat any of them, but a lot of people don't like salmon (or fish) and pork's a tricky one, so would opt for thebeef if I was pushed to.

It does seem like a strange choice. I know so many people that don't like salmon, I think you'd have to go for the pork. Presumably there is a vegetarian option people could choose if they didn't like the pork?

If you went for beef remember that people like it cooked different ways. This is the problem we are having with our main choices at the minute, I want beef & yorkies but the beef is cooked very rare & I know there will be trouble getting many people to eat it that way.

I'd prefer to eat salmon personally.

Seeing that you are a veggie I am guessing there will also be a vegetarian dish to chose? If so, that should keep everyone happy. The people who don't like salmon can just go for the veggie option.

It's your wedding and if your OH prefers the salmon then go with that. Your guests will be happy with whatever you give them. Lets face it - it's a free meal!

It may be a free meal, but people will still complain, they may well say it was a lovely meal but then moan to their neighbour about it. Although I can just see our wedding guests complaining about the choices of food.

I don't eat salmon or pork....but I'd go with the salmon - you'll find most people eat it and if not you can serve them the vegetarian option - plus a lot of people are vegetarians that eat fish (pescetarians?)...if you're not fussed and that's what OT wants - go for that!

We had sea bass and everyone was really happy not to have standard chicken (veg option was mushroom risotto). Totally craving our wedding meal now Smiley laugh x

Not everyone is going to agree with all your choices. There are so many decisions to make that people could potentially disagree with (e.g. venue, flowers, dress, registry office/church, food blah blah). Yes they may moan to their neighbor about it, but that's not your problem.

A wedding is about the couple and should represent their tastes and wishes. Most guests will have the decency to appreciate that. If not, then then that's their problem and those people are never going to be happy with whatever you put on for them.

I know loads of people that don't like salmon but no one that doesn't like Pork but that's just me, I'm surprised they won't do a chicken option.

I don't eat pork so if I was guest I'd be going hungry! Being a meat eater can't say I'd be happy being reduced to the vegetarian choice! It would depend on what it was!

why won't they allow a chicken option?

Hmmm, I hadn't thought about how the beef is cooked might be tricky in itself.

There isn't a chicken option as the venue say the salmon is an alternative which is apparently popular. We're having a veggie option for me and for a couple of other guests who don't eat meat or fish either.

I think what we'll do is go for the salmon with also the veggie option and tell guests the choices with the invites so they can pick what they'd prefer in advance. If people really kick up a fuss (which I hope they won't!!!) maybe we could talk to the venue and arrange something different for those people.

I guess like a couple of you have said, it is our day and if my OH is happy with this choice then I'm happy Smiley smile

Thanks so much for all the help, muchly appreciated!xxxxx
