Menus - choice or none?

Fozzy Bear, 10 March, 2009 at 13:32 Posted on Planning 0 16

Thinking about putting in with the invitations a note, along the line of, you're having beef unless you ask me to sort something else out for you...

What have you done, given people a choice or just picked it for everyone?

?

We had decided to just have a set menu for everyone but now we have decided to give people the choice of three dishes for each course. We just have to check that this ok with our venue. She has said it is via email, as long as we collate all the info, but we are going to see her next Tuesday so I ill make sure.

I wouldn't bother giving a choice except of course for the vegetarians. Why make hard work for yourself?

We arnt able to give our guests a choice. We had the choice of 4 different menus, 4 items for each course, but could only pick one thing. Its hard as not everyone will like what we have chosen, but basicly its tough. I know we have one vegitarian coming, and i will let her choose what she has in advance - because i can do that for her. If anyone turns us and is veggie and hasnt told us then tough, and if anyone doesnt like what it is then its tough again.

My dad doesnt like the starter, his partner doesnt like the main, and neither my mum or mil like the pudding.........but its what we wanted - and you cant please everyone!

We didn't bother giving anyone a choice, it seemed like way too much hassle! Both our courses were non-veggie (prawn starter and chicken main), so we picked a veggie menu too, and simply put in the invites "please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements", so the friend allergic to seafood was given the veggie starter, etc.

We didn't tell people what the meal would involve, because you get people moaning about how they don't like it!

    Hi Fozzy,

We won't be giving a choice, simply because it will cost so much more per person to do so.

We know there aren't any vegetarians, and we will be able to sort something a bit different for the couple of small children.

    xx

Our venue said we could give a choice, but it would be an extra £3.50 a head. So we didn't give a choice! We just said on our info sheet that if anyone had any special dietery requirements they should let us know. We had six vegetarians, one lactose intolerant and one celiac/diabetic. Venue accomodated them with no problems.

We have 2 options for the starter and 2 for mains plus a couple of veg options but we don't know what they are.

I would have hated to have only had one choice and made guests have that or go hungry and our venue was happy to offer choices. We are paying more for it but felt it was worthwhile.

We also have a diabetic, vegan and a fussy bride ? and the venue is providing different meals for us so I'm not making it easy for them.

I would only give an option for them to let you know if they have any special dietry requirements, such as veggie, diabetic etc etc other than that just give them a set menu!

Much easier to plan and organise that way!

WSS - We are not giving a choice as you're never going to please everyone...at the end of the day it's free food for them all so if they don't like it tough (how harsh am I?) Tee hee.

Mayday completely agree with you. Our venue doesn't allow us to give our guests a choice either, apart from a vegetarian option. Early on we agreed that we'd choose what we liked and not try to accomodate everyone otherwise we'd have fallen out several times!

We gave our guests the choice of 5 different dishes but then again we had outside caterers so we could do just that. The food was a very important part of our day ?

Our venue gives us 5 options, we pick one and everyone has that, unless dietary requirements require something different. We won't be putting on the additional info what the meal is (I'm not sure we would have even chosen it by then), but ask for any specific requirements. As a guest, I wouldnt expect to be told what the meal is either.

We are having a choice of two dishes and a vegetarian option if required. It was one of the first things we checked when we were booking that we could have a choice.

I went to a wedding where there was a set menu and I hadn't been asked before hand (on invitation etc) if I had any dietary req's and I didn't eat what they were serving (starter or main). I also couldn't get a veg option as I hadn't ordered before hand!

I had been at a wedding at the same venue 4 months before with a choice of two meals on the menu on the day so it didn't occur to me that they might be having a set menu, especially given that they didn't mention it at all.

I've never been so glad to see the buffet at night!! I think it's totally fine if you are asking beforehand, but it's awful having been at a wedding since 1ish so probably not really had lunch and then not being able to eat the meal.

We are only offering one option but we are letting people know on the day rsvp what we are serving so that they can let us know if they don't want it.
