Message for Sez - Re: Cape Verde

Portia, 20 May, 2009 at 12:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

Not to hijack your holiday requests thread, I noticed you've been to Cape Verde and wondered what you thought?

I really really fancied it but H vetoed it based on some reviews about flies and the wind

I wanted to go as it's a reletively short flight, we loved the Gambia, it's somewhere new and looks like the carribean without the flight times

How was it for you? TIA

Not Sez, but I have been to Sal myself. Never really had a problem with flies whilst I was there. Climate was lovely, and I was there in December. Crystal clear waters were fantastic for swimming in, but there is a lot of construction and didn`t seem to have many other secondary activities to do. Although if you are looking for a stress free beach holiday then I think you would enjoy it.

We loved it, although we had freak weather when we were there and everywhere flooded but I still got the best tan ever. Like Glider said there is a lot of construction happening on the island. There are flies but it's off the coast of Africa so I don't know what people expect and they're no worse than lots of other places we've been. H really wants to go to Boa Vista now but there is even less there than Sal. KB3 has also been and really enjoyed it.

Bugger!!! I wish I'd put my foot down now ?

He said we could go in a couple of years when it's established and the work is finished, I want to go now while it's new and special

Glad you both enjoyed it, a lazy beach holiday sounds just up my street

    Thanks for the replies

Portia, Banjul is not really like the Caribbean at all. Can be very rough outside of the hotels, and a lot more begging from the locals there. Just something I thought I would make you aware of.

A bit late to this but we went last year and loved it. So much so we've bought a holiday home ? I suppose you could part blame me for the construction work.

Thanks Glider, we did Banjul about 18 months ago, actually got really friendly with some of the hawkers, who once you stopped ignoring them or brushing them off, were really lovely and fascinating to talk to.

I meant the sandy beaches, weather and clear waters were like the carribean without having to fly so long

Well if it warrants the bouncy green man, then I'm every more disappointed I didn't force the issue LOL

Is your avatar picture of Cape Verde? Have you got any pictures I could nose at please just to add to my disappointment

How wierd the pictures don't show, and the links don't work until I pressed reply then they show in the preview pane.

Looks lovely, perhaps next year [sigh]

If you decide to rent out your holiday home, let me know, I might be able to persuade H if it's to help out a internet wierdo Hitcher ?

I've half convinced myself to give in and go to Boa Vista instead of Cyprus or Turkey like H wants lol.

We're booked to go to Lemnos in Greece on a Neilson Active instead of Cape Verde, to be fair to H the flight times didn't work too well for Cape Verde with things like dog sitters and travelling to the airport, but I'm fairly determined we'll go next year.

Go, bring back loads of photos for me to sob over LOL

We loved Cape Verde - went late last year to Boa Vista and plan to go back next year to Sal.

Weather was amazing - I got my first tan in years and the hotel was brand new and beautiful. We didn't leave the resort as we were after a chill out holiday but there are things to do.

The airport was so strange - the same staff checked you in and then boarded you and the departures lounge was outdoors!

Sal was a bit like that. When we got there the duty free shop was closed and it was the middle of the day then someone came and said they'd open it up in 10 minutes lol.

The 200 Capo Verde note has the local airline on it, did a nice swap with a local for it! ?

Sadly I only had 24 hours there but still enjoyed it! Sez, how do you normally fly there? with Thomson from Gatwick or with TAP via Lisbon? I flew down via Lisbon and the connection was very good, our flight from Heathrow was delayed so had a minibus meet us at the aircraft and took us directly to the next aircraft.

We did Boa Vista this April. Very laid back indeed! I have left a review on tripadvisor. We stayed at the Parque das Dunas on Chaves beach.

Gotta eat now, but if you have any questions, I'll be back on later x
