Message in a bottle invites....any ideas??

Elvisforever, 16 November, 2011 at 10:59 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi everyone, not posted much on here but lurked for a while! We're having a beachy theme wedding and would love to do message in a bottle invitations. Has anyone got any idea where I could get these from?

Want to put them together myself and not spend loads of money on them, so any help would be much appreciated!!

Thank you ?

What sort of numbers are you looking for? Ebay is probably a good bet, or perhaps a local cafe that sells small bottles of wine might be willing to save them up for you.

Are you going to 'age' the paper? That, coupled with handwritten invites, would look great I think.

Have a look at this website:

    www.bestdestinationwedding.com/forum

It's an American forum for destination weddings and has been a massive help for me in planning my wedding abroad. There are loads of people on there who have done message in a bottle invitations and some of them have really taken it to the extreme! Just type it into the search box and you'll find loads of threads with full instructions. Some contain templates, but you have to have posted 150 times to download them. If you want anything, give me a shout and I'll download it and send to you.

There will be about 50 invites (about 100 people). Did have a quick look on Ebay but don't think there are any in the numbers I would need! That's an idea about a cafe, have to look into that.... Thanks!

ETA: Forgot to say, yeah we were going to make the paper look old and battered, plus put some sand and shells into the bottle so it looks more authentic!

That's brilliant, thank so much for that. I'll have a look and see if there's anything there ? so it definitely can be done then, that's a relief!

50 glass bottles for £34 here: https://jarsandbottles-store.co.uk/index.php/glass-bottles/100ml-dorica-bottle.html or larger https://jarsandbottles-store.co.uk/index.php/glass-bottles/250ml-dorica-bottle.html for £44; lots of other sizes/styles but that sort of came to me as an obvious sort of style.

Might be worth giving them a call and see if they have any suggestions? They might have some 'odd quantities' of assorted bottles lying around they'd be glad to sell you to get rid of them.

Remember you can get parchment style paper as well - and you'll also need packaging boxes/tubes such as from https://www.defendapack.co.uk/postal_tubes.htm unless you're giving them out by hand. They also have coloured tubes which might match your colourscheme too. We almost bought them from here until we changed our mind from scroll type invites to more traditional folded as we had too much information to put on them.

Wow AJ, that's fab! Thanks so much for researching that for me, sounds like they really might do the trick! Can't check on this computer as I have no access to shopping websites atm but that's the first thing I'm doing when I get in! Didn't even know the postal tube thing existed ?

    Cheers!

I've received two lots of invitations like this. One set were really fabulous, the other looked pretty naff.

Make sure you practice to get it right before completing them all. Good luck!

Hmm, yeah it has got the potential to be rubbish which is what I was worried about! What made one set better than the other? Was thinking of sand/shells/glitter inside (with some coconut oil so it smells like holidays!) and old paper tied with twine or ribbon. Is that the sort of idea that would look less naff in your opinion?

Ribbon or twine? I'd go for sisal string as used by gardeners. Distress it a bit by rubbing a sharp knife along it to fray it, perhaps even soaking it in tea to 'age' it.

But I agree with CB, done properly they'll look great.

Yeah that's a good idea. Really don't want it to be the sort of invite that looks amateurish! Need to start getting a move on, only got 6ish months to go!
