Messing about with shoes

HelenSomerset, 12 September, 2013 at 23:52 Posted on Planning 0 4

As has been mentioned on previous threads, a lot of traditional wedding shoes can be a bit ugly. Well, I think so anyway. Also, I was wanting something a bit more "exciting" - whatever that is.

So, I have been try to find some very pale blue high heels to have as wedding shoes that are a bit jazzy. After scanning through Etsy over many evenings when I probably should have been doing other things, I quite like the idea of these lace appliques being added to shoes. Either light blue lace to white/ivory/cream shoes or pale blue shoes with white lace sections. However, these things don't seem the easiest to source and I would quite like to try to shoes on to make sure that I could actually walk in them (for most of the day at least). Sort of thing in the photo below:-

The question I wanted to ask is - has anyone had a go at customizing their own shoes? Do you think it would be feasible to buy some high heeled shoes and have a go at adding on the lace bits yourself or would this be beyond the skills of an enthusiastic amateur? If this topic has been done before or anyone wants to show off their creative attempts, feel free as I want the ideas!

Thanks for your help!

I haven't done anything like this myself but I saw this DIY tutorial for a similar kind of thing that might be of some help...

I have bought nude coloured shoes and thinking of overlaying them with lace.

I absolutely agree with you that most wedding shoes are sooo ugly!

Debenhams did have some really cheap wedding shoes in their sale - i've just looked and most of the cheaper shoes have gone but there's still some for around £30. Anyway - why not try and pick some up in a sale and just give it a go? I expect the cost of a custormised pair like the one you have shown is probably going to cost more than a bit of experimenting! I'd see if you can use an old pair of your own shoes or buy a pair in a chairty shop/boot fair first to have a practice and work out a design you like, then go for it with a high street pair.

I don't think it would be too hard as you can buy the applique sections, dye them blue and spend a while positioning them on your shoes before gluing. I am going to customise my shoes as well when I have a spare minute - hadn't considered this kind of design which looks really nice. Good luck!

Thanks for your advice. I am definitely going to watch that DIY tutorial and give it a go with a cheap pair of shoes first as Red Kite suggested.

Just need to fine a cheapy shoe shop and pop down the local haberdashers now...

Have you seen any shoes that you like that are not "wedding"? Why not look for whatever the influence you're looking for is - ie lace/glitter/ruffles - you might find your market is opened waaaaaay up!!
