Mexico questions - OMs?

pandorasbox, 27 March, 2012 at 12:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

I have asked somewhere before ages ago but can't find the thread now.

1. Did you get vaccinations for Mexico and should I be getting them sorted ready for Aug honeymoon?

2. What currency is best to take for use there?

Thanks!

Take pesos...better exchange rate and better value for money out there.

Waves cluelessly ? - where do you go for your injections please MW? Does the GP do them, and do you remember how much it was roughly?

We're going in May and we hadn't even thought to check if we needed any ?

    ?

Flo and PB - Whereabouts are you going ladies? We are off to Playa Del Carmen, can't flipping wait!

This is a handy website for checking vaccinations required/advised for travel https://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations/north-america/mexico.aspx

We didn't have any for Mexico, but when we went to Kenya we did and we didn't have to pay anything Lamby, except for yellow fever but that's irrelevant for Mexico. The nurse at our surgery did them.

Your GP will do them. If it's a large GP surgery they will likely stock them and so the will be free. If they don't have then in stock they will write you a prescription, so the most you would ever pay for would be the cost of two prescritpions...free in Scotland. You take the vaccines back to the doctor/nurse who will administer them.

It's worth noting that while the vaccines are advised (but not mandatory) for Mexico, if you are unlucky enough to fall ill with something that you ignored advice to vaccinate for, many travel insurers will not pay your medical bills. Not worth the risk for a few quid in my opinion. *takes off preachy hat* ?

Thanks Flo, will get on it - do you have to have a certain number of weeks before you go for them to get in your system?? (so clueless!)

Woweee, just googled your place - it looks amazing! We are going to Riu Tequila so not too shabby ? but not as beaut as your place! Although it's not our HM so we couldn't go too crazy price wise ?

I had all these last week for Kenya but the GP does Diptheria, Tetanus, and Polio in one and hep a in one and typhoid in another so I had 3 all together. I think it varies from region to region. Most surgeries will have a travel nurse who can advise you and administer them. Good luck! My arms still hurt and I have another one next week (yellow fever)

Most of them you can have at any time before. If you need hep B (I did for going to Mexico but if you're only going to tourist areas you may not) then that requires 3 jabs over 2 months, IIRC.

When you book an appointment at the GP, make sure you tell the receptionist what it's for and ask if they do a "travel clinic" - they may have a dedicated member of staff/timeslot for vaccines and it may not be possible to get them in a normal GP appointment.

Thanks Helenia, have just spoke to them and I need to see the Nurse to confirm what I'll need, but she was confident I can get them at the surgery, phew! We'll be in all touristy areas so hopefully won't need hep B, but will double check when I go in.

So glad I saw this thread, thanks ladies!

Flow can you update after your appointment? I was wondering the same thing, we are staying in the same resort as you for 2 weeks!

Me too, looking forward to a honeymoon report from Flow!

Thanks all for the info. The travel agent said not to bother when we booked but since then I read that it is advised you do - hadn't thought of the travel insurance angle. I will speak to my nurse when I next go for a check up which I am due in the next month or so anyway. Was really hoping to avoid jabs!
