Mexico- sightseeing/excursions

Kwal, 12 September, 2014 at 15:32 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 3

Hi there,

We are going to Mexico for our honeymoon in November, it is only for 7 nights so we will spend a few days by the pool/beach relaxing but are looking for a couple of recommended day trips/places to see during our time there. It's Riviera Cancun that we are going to.

Any help is appreciated!! Smiley smile

    Hiya!

I have a holiday booked to Mexico next year and there are a few excursions I love the look of... I have put some below for you to look up :0)

Chichen Wonders One of the seven wonders of the world... temple ruins and a must see I think?

Tour Xplor Fuego You can do this as a day tour or evening tour...

I have pasted the information from Thomson about it:

This is one for adrenaline junkies. You’ll start your experience Tarzan-style with a zip line tour through the jungle. Once you’re safely strapped in to your harness, you’ll have free reign of a two-mile circuit. This zip line network is the fastest in Mexico and, at some points, you’ll find yourself soaring as high 160 metres in the air. Once you’ve come back down to earth, we’ll put you behind the wheel of a 4x4 so you can rev your way through the rainforest. During your journey, you’ll stop for a swim in an ancient cenote, which is a type of underground pool contained in a cavern. You’ll also have the chance to captain a raft here. But, in true Action Man spirit, you’ll have to use your hands rather than oars to paddle. If you need a break, there’s plenty to take in while you rest. These age-old caves are roofed with stalactite spears and alien-looking rock formations.

Xcaret Full Day Plus - Part zoo Part theme park

Part zoo, part theme park, this gigantic eco-archaeological complex has enough to keep all ages busy for days. It’s a 250-acre playground of jungle, white beaches and coves stuffed with attractions. Snorkel along rivers through caves and leafy jungle. Or follow forest trails to hidden ruins and a replica Mayan village. There’s also a zoo, aviary and butterfly garden. Meanwhile, if you're up for relaxing, you can chill out at the beach or the lagoons and restaurants. It’s a good idea to stay around for the evening, too. Come sundown, everyone sits down to a spectacular show featuring Mayan rituals, acrobatics, mariachi bands and dancing. And with this trip, everything is included - return transfers, a guided orientation plus vouchers for a buffet lunch and drinks. Plus, for an extra charge, you can even swim with dolphins or have a go at the Sea Trek - where you don an air filled helmet to walk, rather than swim, along the seabed.

    Hope that helps?

Hi, H2B and I travelled around Mexico 18 months ago....

Now everyone has their own tastes and likes however I would recommend heading out to Tulum - amazing ruins overlooking the stunning sea (take swimming stuff) , the town itself is a drive through on the edge of the freeway, you need to turn off and head down the beach road there are amazing little restaurants, a few little boutique shops and hotels with bars etc... carry on down the beach road and you get to a nature reserve.... stunning abandoned beaches. You can hire bikes and just cycle down - its a mile or two but very pleasant and you get to explore and escape. The area is also famous for its canote - water caverns which you can swim in.

On the opposite side of Cancun I would recommend Isla Mujeres (you can day trip to it via hovercraft or ferry boat), great little island where you get around by golf cart (easy to hire) ... so you can explore everywhere... some great beach bars and clear, warm shallow waters going out for miles.

The trips in the previous recommendation are well advertised, what i would say is that Mexico is really friendly and cheap to explore on your own (you don't need tours etc. just use common sense) and it has such beautiful natural wonders that mean you don't need the man made attractions... Cancun and surrounds are very touristy but just moments away you get to see unspoilt beauty so head out, you won't regret it.

PS if you have transfers from the airport to your resort great, if not be aware that the taxi's from the airport charge 3 - 4 times more than anywhere else in the country so do take that as a normal fare (i.e. we paid nearly the same for a 1.5 hour taxi from the port to Tulum as we did a 10 min cab ride into Cancun - they do it because they can etc.)

    C

Another vote for Tulum and also I'd recommended Altournative I think they were called, we did zip wires etc in the jungle. We did organised tours as we wanted less hassle organising on honeymoon. They were good but expensive. There are also some 'theme' parks that have animals, watersports, shows etc which looked good but we didn't go in the end because we had run out of money!

Another Tulum recommendation! Although the trip we booked via the hotel rep and to be honest alot of time was wasted faffing about. It was a combined trip with Xel-Ha so some on the trip were full day at Xel-Ha and others were half Tullum & half Xel-Ha. After picks up from various stops at hotels, four coaches arrived at Xel-Ha and if you wanted to go to Tullum, it was back onto another coach! We did spend the afternoon at Xel-Ha which was ok but not as good as I expected.

We didn't make it to Chichen Itza as it is some distance from the Riviera however we did go to Coba instead which is closer. This trip we booked with a chap who ran the water sports desk at the beach. We completely lucked out and had a mini bus and the guide to ourselves. Amazing site, not as scenic as Tullum (or as large as CI) but still very impressive. We only spent a morning there but it was a lovely break from the beach and we felt like Indiana Jones walking thru the jungle! The guide showed us round to the furthest point from the car park then left us to make our own way back with no pressure to return at a set time.

If I did it again, I'd defintely go back to Tulum (and Coba) but find a smaller group or make our own way there probably by taxi as I've loved to had time to wander round without the group & go for a dip in the sea, rather than being hurried along!

We also spend a late afternoon/evening at Playa del Carmen which was a lovely change from the hotel but it could be skipped without missing anything! Hope that helps x
