Migraine Sufferers

Rizzo, 9 May, 2012 at 10:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 27

Other than drugs, what do you do/use to shift migraines?

I'm plagued with them at the moment and can only take paracetomol so I'm slowly turning insane.

Mr Moo has told me that I need to de-stress today but other than ditching two 'friends' who have proved to be a couple of vindictive arses, there's not much left for me to do.

Got one on now, it's helping to shift the remains of the one I got in the night.

Lying down in a dark room, in silence. Or, just on the sofa with a sleep mask thingy.

Only thing that worked with mine during pregnancy. Paracetamol did feck all.

I used to suffer with them a lot when I was younger, not so much anymore but I do still get the odd one and wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. They are really evil.

I used to lock myself in a dark room with no disturbances and try to go to sleep, if the nausea let me!

I can't imagine what it must be like only being able to take paracetamol, Migraleve used to be a livesaver! Could you try those 4head roller things, they have them for migraines, not sure if they'd be any good though.

I have never had a migraine so cant help but have you been to the doctor's? Surely there must be something he can give you?

ETA - Sorry about the 'friends' drama. That sucks.

I take the anadin liqui-fast ones, but if they are a no go, I'd suggest a dark room and some sleep.

Good on your for removing the friends issue.

When i get a migraine the only thing that cures it is lying down in a dark room and trying to sleep it off. Drugs dont work for me.

I use 4Head, paracetamol and then just lie down with an eye mask on and the curtains closed and try to sleep it off. It's sh!te when you can't get drugged up to the eyeballs. I had the 'flashes' this morning but luckily it didn't develop into a full blown migraine.

Are you avoiding the usual stuff, chocolate, coffee etc? Drinking plenty of water?

Kool n Soothe help me but probably similar to what you are using. Darkness and attempting to sleep! Really do try and get back to the GP and ask for Cocodamol, you can't carry on with headaches for the next few weeks! Hope you're ok re friends situation too x

4Head, paracetamol, cooling eye mask (or cold flannel if you don't have one of these) and lay down in a dark room.

Avoid any foods that trigger a migraine and drink plenty of water.

And less of the computer screen... as much as we love having you here it won't be helping!!

You're not supposed to take cocodamol when you are pregnant. I miss it more than alcohol.

This is the only thing which works for me. I have to try and sleep it off. It's hard though!

No computer/phone/telly/reading. Plenty of water. Dark room. Total silence. Very little movement. Those things are the only things that work for me.

Dark room. Sleep. No talking. No activity at all.

Pills or not, that's what does it for me.

I have it prescribed and the doctor told me to stop taking it when I found out I was pregnant so I'm just going on what they said.

I guess different Drs do different things/have different opinions. I was told the reason they advise not to take it is the risk of baby getting addicted to it but it's such a low dosage it's apparently unlikely. I was prescribed it whilst pregnant with my first. I can't get it here, it's illegal so lucky headaches are not as bad this time around! One of the 1st tri ladies was also prescribed it last week. Mooeys doctor didn't give it to her though.

Maybe it's because I was on the 30/500 strength. They never offered me a lower dosage though so I've just avoided, like I said before, I miss it more than alcohol. ?

"The safety of codeine for use during pregnancy has not been established. If codeine is used near term in the third trimester it may cause breathing difficulties or withdrawal symptoms in the baby after birth. This medicine should be avoided during pregnancy, unless considered essential by your doctor, and then only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs any potential risk to the baby. Seek medical advice from your doctor." (Netdoctor)

    HTH!

Think it's a case of risk vs benefit?

I generally be sick when I get a migraine and cant eat, so I dont take any tablets on a empty stomach. Those cool patchs for your forehead, actually make mine worse its the cold I tense against it which makes the headache worse.

So my cure consists of, plenty water, dark room (pitch black, no light) and sleep.

I have had them since I was 18 and Im now 28, I have tried everything, but I just have to ride it out.

I see you can't take ibuprofen due to pregnancy, that's what I was gonna suggest before I read that!

but lying in a pitch black silent room

    Avoid chocolate, caffeine & cheese!

    Drink lots of water!

only other thing the doctor has done for my migraines is prescribe cocodamol - but again don't think this is allowed whilst pregnant!

Poor you! Were you on it regularly? Perhaps it's only to be taken a few times or something... Or your doctor is just plain mean!
