MIL Dilemma

freyamo, 6 February, 2009 at 07:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Mil fell in garden last october, had a hip replacement and cardiac arrest, hence spent 1 month in intensive care and came home last week.

FIL had a stroke 8 yrs ago and is also diabetic so has to watch what he eats, she is a large woman.... thats the background, my problem is their eating. Now they are back in their little bungalow its down to me to order their shopping online after they give me their list.

Yesterday they wanted: Malted, milk, rich tea, ginger nuts, digestives, tinned spam, cooking lard, sausages, 4 packets of Mr Kiplings Cakes and 5 jars of paste!!!! with the paste they make a sandwich then toast it? surely thats lethal?

How the flip do I put it nicely that this is pure fat and not good for them? he quite often has days when he 'doesnt feel special' (not surprising with what she feeds him) for the 4 months he was being looked after while she was in hospital he was 100%.

Do I say anything or just let them get on with it? they are in their 70's and don't seem to be able to change their diet!!

It is difficult, and at their age it will be hard to change their diet if they are unwilling, I'd go for small changes with each order (one healthy option) as an alternative and see how that goes. We did the same for my grandparents (although they ate differently to yours as they cooked everything from scratch but bought a very limited range as tried to only spend as little as possible) but we introduced one item a week and now after several years my grandad is now willing to try anything, and will ask for new things. Good luck.xx

I'd ask the GP to refer them to a dietician

If your FiL is diabetic I would have thought he'd have been given loads of dietary guidance from his doctors? I would ask your H to give them a severe talking-to and tell them that if they want to eat this crap they can go out and buy it themselves, and offer your help in planning healthy meals for the week. It's either that or leave them to it, imo - I can't see a softly-softly approach having much effect.

What about adding some healthy soups to their list, quick and easy to warm up.

If you buy all the list, make sure you get the fat free/less fat options instead
