Milk in First or Last

FussAss, 2 April, 2008 at 09:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 37

Helloooo
Im new on here so please be gentle with me.
And apologies if this has come up in topic before, BUT...
My friend and I were having a discussion the other day and couldnt agree if you should put the milk in before the boiling water or after in a cuppa.
I think after, but my husband agreed with my friend!!! which didnt go down well ....
What do you think??

Milk should go in last, because otherwise the water isn't hot enough for the tea to infuse properly (assuming it's cold milk). Also you can't get it exactly the right colour if you put the milk in first.

After, definitely. Surely if you add cold milk first, it won't brew as well? Mind you I'm an oddity to most people as I only have the teeniest amount of milk in my tea anyway.

Forgot to say, welcome to OT!

    Absolutely last.

I hate it when people splodge the milk in first as the tea is nearly always too milky and goes cold quicker.

I watched a programme about this and they decided first. Even taking into consideration the infusion debate.

I use soya milk and it says on the bottle that you should add it first if you are making tea and not to use boiling water. Anyone know why that is?

In my mind milk should never be in at the sam time as the teabag.

Soooo - if you are making it in the pot the milk goes in the mug first, and you pour brewed tea on it. If you are making it in the mug pour boiling water on the tea-bag and after removing teh tea-bag add the milk.

    Simple?

I alway put the milk in last if I am making the tea in a cup, but if I am making the tea in a teapot, I will put the milk in first.

It's supposed to be one of those class things isn't it.
Originally, when the upper class British were in India in the consulates, they found that putting boiling water straight into the cup would often crack their expensive bone china.By putting milk into the cup first this didn't happen. So it became viewed that putting the milk in first was a high class thing to do, as it suggested you were wealthy enough to own expensive china.
Doesn't make much difference on my Argos stoneware mugs though.

I'm using Punjana at the minute, it was 70p for 160 in asda the other day!!!!

Deffo milk last - it's disgusting before (like u said Cariad I know someone (my OH!)who puts milk in first so he doesn't have to do it a lot!!!)

I did hear a theory that putting the milk in first clogs your teabag up as the milk particles block the wee holes???

    Tea first, milk in last.

Absolutely WFloweryS about no teabag coming into contact with milk. Bleurgh! [xx(]

At wat point do you add sugar though? I always add sugar before milk as it doesn't dissolve properly if milk is there as the liquid is too cool.

Particularly true if you are being posh and using sugar cubes. ?

Got to be the last thing in the cup, surely?

Teabag in, then water, then milk.

[obviously if I were posh I'd be using a teapot, but I'm not... ?]
