Minimoon - decision made! Tips appreciated!

MissZKG, 27 May, 2011 at 14:19 Posted on Planning 0 13

After much umming and aaahhhing we have decided that we wont go to Paris or Dublin as feel it'd be too rushed in two days so.... we will go to London for a 2 day break after the wedding instead! Some may think this is dull but we love going to london for the odd day here and there and my OH loves all the art galleries and the architecture etc. So, we're going to do afternoon tea at the Savoy, Thames boat ride, visit the British Museum etc, see a show (poss Wicked??), go to Harrods (i have shamefully never been!) and just generally lush out! haha.

Any tips, hints or recommendations for places to eat, visit, stay etc much appreciated! ?

Have fun! That's my only tip! lol. Book yourself a table for lunch in Chinatown for Dim Sum.. I usually go to the New World restaurant as the food is amazing but there really is loads to choose from. That's what me and OH love to do when we visit London.. as well as shop until our feet fall off!

Are you travelling by train? If you are there is a great website where you can get 2 for 1 on all sorts:

    http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/

When we went we got a load of vouchers for things like the churchill museum (round the corner of house of parliament), tower of london, HMS Belfast (all stuff we have done before, but never together).

One other place we went to that was a freebie was the museum of London near St Pauls. Its a self guided tour through the history of London from pre-history to today. I really enjoyed that one

Best dim sum in London is at the Royal China on Baker Street. Fact.

I'd recommend Kulu Kulu on Brewer Street for sushi. Cheap as chips, very fresh. Try the aubergine and the soft shell crab hand rolls. Omnomnom.

A real hidden gem of a wine bar is Gordon's, just up from Embankment. All candle lit, excellent wine, plenty by the glass.

Harrods is a sight to behold but go early in the morning to avoid all of the tourists. If you want to do any shopping, avoid Oxford Street and head to Westfield. Well served by buses and the tube. Excellent shopping porn in The Village part of it, as well as a champagne bar.

If you want a really nice meal out with excellent service, great seasonal menu and the most amazing wine list (certainly I've ever seen), I'd recommend Clos Maggiore just off Covent Garden.

Let me know if there's anything specific you want to do food and/or drink wise and I shall empty my brains of information for you!

Oh and we stayed in the Marriott Park Lane - it was a freebie as my OH works away so often so we were able to use points and we were upgraded to a corner suite was absolutely lush!

Sounds lovely! Right up my street, is that.

My H always goes on about how good Ronnie Scott's is. I'm yet to go there but he's been wanting to take me for years.

    Wow thanks everyone!

Cricket Bride - thanks, v useful... do you have any tips on places to stay? We're looking at staying at DUKES LONDON, which looks and sounds fab.

Any other tips on where to eat (not that I am obsessed by food - honest!?) would also be great! Or places to go for cocktails?? I am such a lush!

    Thanks!

What's your budget for where to stay?

Cocktails - Hush Brasserie near Bond Street, Light Bar at St Martin's Lane Hotel (home of Bungalow 8 night club), Sketch if you want to push the boat out (V pricey), Brown's on St Martin's Lane also does cocktails and they're half price Sun - Wednesday.

Food - what sort of thing do you like to eat? Do you want cheap and cheerful, pub grub or high end?

We're thinking of approx £600 for a 2 night stay. pref fairly central and to include brekkie.

Food-wise, anything really, like some good places for pub grub for lunches and maybe one nights dinner somewhere posh! H2B said he might pack his DJ! Hurrah!

If you want somewhere modern, have a look at the St Martin's Lane Hotel. They often do deals. Their restaurant, Asia de Cuba, is highly regarded too. The Rookery is meant to be lovely too.

I'd recommend having a wander around Borough Market, lots of yummy bits to try (cheeses, cold meats, you can buy fizz and drink it whilst wandering round). Then try Roast for lunch or, one of my favourite places, The Garrison, just off the South Bank. Fab gastro pub (and where I fell in love with my husband!).
