Mini-moon in UK

Hoddy, 15 September, 2013 at 16:57 Posted on Planning 0 21

OH and I have decided we want to have a weekend away after the wedding and go on a proper honeymoon for our year anniversary. We marry on a Thursday so will be going away on the Friday.

However we have no idea where to go! We want something special but not too expensive. Does anyone have any good ideas for me?

We have only been away together once so are very open to ideas Smiley smile Thanks!

Our very first weekend away together was in the Lake District. It's such a pretty place and some of the little villages are so quaint & romantic! We stayed in Ambleside the very first time & its lovely but have also stayed in Grasmere, Hawkshead & Bowness over the years which are all equally as nice!

Its great if you like the outdoors, walking/biking and cosy little pubs! Smiley smile

We have a week booked in a lovely cottage in the peak district. It is fairly expensive but that might be because we are going for Christmas week. If you look for Tom's barn and Douglas's barn you'll find it. I think they do short breaks depending on the time of year.

We absolutely loved a little stone cottage on Dartmoor with private garden, BBQ, washing machine etc. Walking distance to cute village, 2 pub/restaurants, free roaming ponies, nice drive to various villages and small towns with great vintage shops, tea rooms, restaurants. Plus the moors themselves were stunning and great fun. And we did the seaside thing at Brixham which was ideal. We both thought it couldn't have been better for a honeymoon!! (Still high on the memories, can you tell?!!)

I'll be watching this thread with interest as we're doing the same- but will probably spend a week or 2 in a few different places to see more of the country. We were definitely thinking about the Lake District and there are parts of Scotland that look stunning.

We had a long weekend in Snowdonia a few years ago and we had a lovely time- plenty of nice walks and cosy pubs. We stayed in Betws Y Coed and there's a great B&B just outside of the town- only 5 minute walk.

The Muirloch Executive Lodges at Piperdam golf and leisure resort are really lovely - especially if you like a hot tub! We've been a couple of times and will probably go back again at some point. You will need a car because they're not particularly central to a town, but they're not too far from Edinburgh and a few other places for a nice day out.

Don't know where you're based so might be a trek for a short break but what about Scotland?

My OH is Scottish and we're getting married in Aberdeenshire. Our honeymoon won't be until about 3 weeks after the wedding so the day after the wedding we're going to go somewhere in the highlands for a couple of nights.

There's so many gorgeous spots up there and I've been looking into log cabins with hot tubs etc. Not cheap though!

    Lake District is lovely too!

Me and the H2B got engaged on the Isle of Wight while on holiday this year. We are thinking that we might head back there for a few days after the wedding for a mini moon. Perhaps in a 5 star hotel this time though....

Its a really beautiful and relaxing place, lovely beaches, tea shops and restaurants among many other things.

Me and OH are planning a 'mini-moon' directly after the wedding and then somewhere else a few months later - love Devon - north Devon is beautiful- lake discrict is gorgeous too, dorset (biased as that's were OH is from and were we are moving too ha!), Yorkshire is beautiful. The uk has so much beautiful country side you can choose from depends on how far you'd like to choose from home Smiley smile

Highly recommend Loch Lomond Smiley winking
Me & OH spent a couple of days in "Lodge at loch Lomond" and had a little room with a view of the loch and a little balcony with table & chairs, sauna in your room and there's a spa bit attached to the place for all your pampering / pool / massages etc. We really enjoyed and dying to go back Smiley smile

That sounds amazing, just what I'm after really. Was it expensive? I just want to relax after all the stress of the wedding. I don't want to be doing loads of activities but at the same time we aren't the sand, sea, sun types.

We've just booked our mini moon at Center Parcs Elveden forest. We've been going there with the kids since they were small. This will be our first break on our own and I can't wait. We're staying at the Lakeview hotel in their honeymoon suite which includes champagne, chocolates and flowers on arrival. It has a large round hydro bath and balcony overlooking the lake. We're going for 4 nights and its only costing £274. We paid a bit extra for a daily gourmet breakfast in their revolving Lakeview restaurant.

We're going Monday to Friday but you can do Friday to Mondays.

We also plan to have a proper honeymoon on our first anniversary.

Quite a few friends have had mini-moons in the South West. St Ives is gorgeous, for example. All beautiful sunsets, boutique hotels and even a Tate gallery ? You can get a lovely cottage for 4 nights for only a couple of hundred pounds most places, if you're happy not to be waited on hotel wise. Hot tub might be an essential for a honeymoon which will up the price but not hugely. Hope you find somewhere perfect.

We're really not beachy/sunbathey people! We did an 15 mile bike ride one of the days, which was hard up and down the hills of the moors, but that's because he's a cycling nut, plus my gift to him was a new bike!

Pricewise, we thought, for what we got out of it, it was cheap. And we didn't need much spending money. Plus the well-equipped kitchen meant we could cook, which was lovely and romantic Smiley smile

The pictures don't do it justice, in our view, but here's the link in case you (or anyone else) were considering that area. I'm trying to work out a window for a time we could go back, and I'm really not the type to stay somewhere twice.
