Missing newborn kittens

RedB, 1 July, 2009 at 11:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 1

The lady across the road reckons her cat has had kittens - she had a big belly with swollen nipples then went out one night and came back thin with saggy belly. I imagine usually a cat will have kittens at home but their cat spends a fair amount of time in our garden so she asked if we had seen any kittens as they can't find them.

So two questions - where would a cat have kittens? I've looked around but our garden is a bit of a bomb site so they could be hidden. And how long would new born kittens survive? The lady reckons the cat hasn't gone back to find them and so I suspect they may not survive long.

Cats have a tendancy to hide their litters out of the way. They are usually quite good at finding places which are warm and dry so you need to look inside sheds, covered areas etc. If your garden is busy with kids and noise you may find that if she's had a litter, she hasn't chosen it to be in your garden though.

Whenever we knew a cat was having a litter, we alwasy ensured there was a cardboard box in easy reach of the mother. In fact, there was one time where the mother was clearly in labour, and was very fidgety, so I went and got a box and straight away, she jumped into it. She knew exactly what to do, admitedly she was an experienced mother already, but a lot of it is instinct for cats.
