Mobile phone recs and ones to avoid

Iris, 3 August, 2009 at 12:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

Morning. My contract is up for renewal so I'm going to attempt to negotiate a decent deal with CPW (yeah right). Can anyone recommend a decent mobile which can do emailing and web browsing, I like the idea of a touch screen phone but I want to be on a lowish tarriff so iphone would be out. I've just had a Blackberry and don;t want another one, also don't want SonyEricsson as Mr I's last few have been rubbish. I like the look of the Samsung Tocco (ultra?) but Nokias have always been reliable. I'll be stuck with the thing for 18 months so all experiences appreciated.

TIA?

    HTC Touch Pro 2.

MrNeo got one of those about a month ago and it's such a brilliant phone. I can't wait for my contract to end so I can get one too.

Bought from www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk (best prices at that time)

I'm not sure about specific models but I've never had problems with Samsung, Nokia or Sony Ericsson phones. I have however had 2 LG phones now that have been bloody crap and I'd never have another LG!

How much do you want to spend? O2 online have a £34 p/m iPhone contract, which also includes unlimited browsing. May be worth considering if you'll be online a lot. I used my phone for browsing whilst on a two-hour train journey a couple of months ago... and the bill came in at £68 (my basic tariff was only £15)!

I've got the Nokia 5800 Express for around £25 on O2 - it's great for music, touchscreen and can do email and web browsing (although a little slow on the web I find, unless you can get a wifi connection)

I have a LG Viewty - I wouldn't recommend it, clunky and annoying.

I'm out of contract and I'm considering an iPhone. I think it's the only phone I'd sign another contract for, otherwise I'd go to the cheap sim only deal.

Ive just got the N97 and I think its brilliant. I work for a phone company so recently Ive had the Blackberry storm, Curve, HTC Magic, Tocco and the N97 and the Nokia surpasses them all in my opinion. Obviously touchscreen but has the Qwerty keyboard too but touchscreen is very responsive. Though it is an expensive phone so Im on 24 month contract (phone free) 900 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited internet and unlimited on-net calls though you can opt for unlimited landlines.

Avoid N97 on vodafone as the network doesn't seem to support full functionallity, according to H who returned his after a week and opted for an Iphone instead

I'm waiting for my contract to end so I too can have an Iphone.................<lusting icon> !

I don't think I can have an iPhone although I want one. CPW would charge me £75 a month on an upgrade. If I go direct with O2 then I have to start again and change my number and all that stuff, can't port my number as I'm already on O2. I hate CPW but am possibly too lazy to leave! It's annoying though that there are good deals out there on the iphone but not open to me.

Thanks for all the recs, I'm going to discount LG and Sony Ericsson (just because of Mr I's problems). It's all so confusing.

Thanks for all the advice, I've gone for a Samsung Jet which should be delivered tomorrow. Apparantly it's really new and amazing. CPW have matched the Vodafone deal so I've stayed with them-apathy rules. Let's see how good it is in real life!

I was in this predicament last week and looked at the Samsung Tocco but in the end I too went for the Samsung Jet. So far i'm really really liking it, dead simple to use, very responsive on the touch screen, nice bright and clear screen to see and the battery life is excellent too.

All in all i'd throughly recommend it - so much so that Mr Dooby is getting one now too!

Thanks Dooby, that's reassuring. I'm so bad at making decisions.
