more advice needed pls! RE: chairs

CharleeA, 17 May, 2012 at 11:03 Posted on Planning 0 18

Our colours are duck egg blue and chocolate brown for the wedding and all of the table linen will be ivory.

WE are on a budget (who isnt) and we are still debating over wehther to have chair covers or not! If we save we could maybe just about aford them.

So, a coupleof questions.

A) do you think they finish off a room or people wouldnt notice once there bums are on them?

This is a pretty good copy of the chairs at the venue, apart from ours are gold whereas these are silver:

Does anyone have any ideas on how to spruce them up a little if we decide not to go for chair covers? Im worried people are going to walk in the ceremonmy room and all they see are the chairs! x

Having been here myself last year, I went with chair covers, but on the day I'd say I didn't notice them that much. So if you are in two minds, and if the seats look like the ones in your OP, then i'd leave them as they are!

We're having the same dilemma over the seats in our ceremony room, they are similar to what you have here but a terracotta colour. We're already paying for covers for the meal/reception chairs and OH just thinks its a waste of money to cover what he sees as perfectly good chairs considering we will be in the room for 30 mins, but I'm undecided.

    Save your money.

You don't see them when you're sitting on them...

    Me this problem too ?

I was going to buy the chair covers so I could resell and get most of money back - but it still works out about 350. I showed my friend a picture of the venue all done up with the chair covers and tables and she commented on how white it looked!

and I agreed - I hadn't noticed before so now me and OH are going to take a trip back to hotel and have another look see and most likely won't bother with the chair covers now. We're also trying to really cut costs at every corner so this will save us quite a bit.

also your chairs will pretty much match your colour scheme so it works out well for you!

    xx

I must say i am a fan of chair covers, i do think they make the room,! Smiley smile i went to a wedding recently and they didnt have chair covers at all and it wasnt as nice as one that did have them, but it is personal preference.

I did go to one before where the didnt have seat covers but they had like white organze type material draped around the chair which looked nice,. kind of similar to the below, they managed to buy a load of material of the net for cheap, it looked lovely and saved them alot of money as they were on a tight budget! xx xx

WSS. I actually find chair covers really irritating as I like to tuck my feet under a chair which you can't do with a cover on! I can't believe the price of them either, totally not worth it IMO if the chairs in your venue are decent and the one you have flashed looks fine.

Thanks for all the advice and ideas guys, I have to say I particulary like this idea and I could maybe do every chair going down the aisle to create an aisle so to speak then maybe every other chair for the wedding breakfast? I could get some cheap organsa roll from the ineternet and try to spruce it up a bit! x

    Hi -

Firstly, I am a venue dresser, so you could say I am somewhat biased, but my opinion is that whilst people may think they don't notice the chair covers when they are on, you will certainly notice them if they are not - if you know what I mean.

That said, I have worked at some venues who have nice chairs and genuinely do not need to be covered unless the couple want to tie their whole colour scheme together and the chairs are not of the same colour as their colour scheme.

So my advice would be, if your venue's chairs are nice and fit in with your colour scheme and your budget does not stretch to chair covers, then don't worry about them.

If your venue's chairs are not so nice, and/or the colour of them works against your wedding colour scheme then try and save enough money to cover just the daytime reception chairs.

I have a "Before & After" album on my facebook page which might help to illustrate the point.

Good luck with your big day!

    x

We've got the same chairs at our venue, gold too! I agree, they're not great, but with our teeny budget, we just can't justify spending £350 on pillow cases for people to sit on, haha!

Also, I know I'm in a minority here, but I do think they look very old fashioned and samey, so I'm happy not to have them. I'm sure they work well for a very traditional style wedding, though.

Thanks guys, theres some great ideas here regarding covering the chairs without blowing my budget!

Our chairs are being used for the full day - ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening reception and, whilst they look nice at the moment, unless i win the lottery we simply cant afford them. Going to definately look at having material/bows put onto them x

Heya, just seen this and picture of your chairs are basically the twins of ours! We have chosen not to go with chair covers, I used to work weddings and know from experience the trouble they can cause plus the pretty bow they normally have only last 10mins and look untidy by the end as they slide down chair, get undone, fall to floor and make a mess. We had one wedding where they annoyed the bride so much with how they looked after a while she told us to get rid of them asap! for this reason we are not covering chairs, its about the celebration of the day in the end!

We arent having chair covers, OH thinks the ones available to our venue look tacky, and whilst they do make the room look more 'weddingy', nobody will see them when bums are on seats anyway! id rather spend the money from our limited budget on other things Smiley smile xx

One word of warning if you do decide to buy your chair covers online and do them yourself. Make sure they fit your venue's chairs, even if they are lycra!

We've had some horror stories where people have found out the chair covers they bought themselves didn't fit the chair, the day before their big day.

We have even bought lycra chair covers ourselves from wholesale suppliers that were so so small, they didn't even fit the smallest banqueting chair!

It's not impossible to do yourself but give yourself plenty of time to make sure they fit, if possible, buy a sample first.

    Good luck x

My friend left it to about 3 weeks before the wedding to make this decision (and a saturday in August) and got a huge discount on the covers. If you are not decided either way you could take the risk but I guess it depends how much you want them.
