More Manchester helup

jaz, 6 August, 2008 at 16:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

Right, I'm going to Manchester for 2 days and have only ever been to the airport and an airport hotel so have no idea of the geography and maps confuse me ?

I need to go to old trafford (football) on 1 days but people with me will be there 2 days - I want to go shopping on the 2nd day. So do we stay somewhere in the city or do we go somewhere near old trafford both nights and I shop in the trafford centre (which I'm asuming is near the football place...)?

HRML pleeeeease

Old trafford is not that close to the trafford centre. its not far, but you wouldnt want to walk ?.

anyway, there are trams from the centre, busses, you name it. stay centrally, somewhere like the radisson on quay street/peter st and then you have the best of all worlds. old trafford isnt far, just get a tram or a bus. do some research anyway, look up the greater manchester transport website etc.

central shops are located around the royal exchange area, exchange square, back of marks, the arndale etc. get a map!

I agree with nickj - stay somewhere central and travel out to old trafford by tram/bus/train.

i hate the trafford centre - it is too big and too busy. and too full of orange coloured girls in too small clothes. the city centre is much better - more choice and more variety. the city centre is fairly small, easy enough to walk around and if you wanted to take a break from shopping then there are other things you can do, whereas in the trafford centre, you'd be stuck with either the cinema, lazarquest or sitting in the hideously extravagant food hall whilst gawping at the other shoppers.

    WNS,

Definately stay in town, it's so easy to get to all the places you mentioned from the centre. Also if you're staying in town there are loads of nice restaurants & bars you could go to, San Carlo is nice (just off Deansgate).

Thanks. Will definitely look in town then. We need a room to sleep 3 which is narrowing our options I think with our budget - why is nothing ever simple?!

Have you tried the Jurys Inn and Premier Lodges in town (near St Peter's Square & GMEX if memory serves me correctly).

If you do decide to go to the trafford centre, get the tram to stretford and then the bus from there - it's probably the easiest way. But as others have said, it's chaos in there. The city centre is so much nicer these days and the new improved arndale is very pleasant for shopping.

I've just checked and the premier inn at GMEX and Jurys inn both do family type rooms.

Premier inn gmex isn't showing availability - I 'm getting MEN arena/paintworks though?

Jurys is showing £99 a night for 2 adults [faints]

Ideally I need something about £150 for both

For that budget, the Ibis in the town centre is perfectly acceptable budget accommodation.

Have you tried looking at www.laterooms.com - Jurys sometimes comes out cheaper.

GMEX Arena & Printworks could be a good option - the Printworks has loads of bars & restaurants in it.

Actually, have just looked at the location - a bit out of the way.

    What are your dates?

I looked at the Ibis - don't go for Charles Stree but the other one on Portland Street should be fine.

Novotel is the same chain of hotels and their city centre hotel is a good location.

I'm sure the midland used to do triples - that's opposite a tram stop for old trafford/ traff centre and walking distance to centre of manchester. as nick said, there's the radisson edwardian there too, and a premier inn round the corner with another over the pub... and what about those self catering flats on princess st? are those still called the dominion?

Portland St - it's next door to the Novotel (same chain, virtually identical rooms apart from the novotel has a gym and access to porn on the tv).

I'm staying at Travel Lodge when I go. There's 3 of us and I got an early deal on the internet only costing £30 for the room. Yes its a double bed and a pull out bed with no breakfast but for one night that's fine. We are going to see Flashdance at the Palace Theatre and then intend on going out maybe to Canal Street.

Can anyone tell me can you walk from Palace Theatre to Canal Street or is it better to get a taxi? Never been out round Manchester at night. Been lots of times in the day shopping.
