More nostalgia for 30 somethings

Iris, 21 April, 2009 at 10:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 28

The school play post reminded me of my primary school days. Did anyone else have the Clarks shoes which had a sort of moveable strap so they could be Mary Janes or sort of court shoeish? They were vile but I thought they were amazing at the time (early to mid 1980s).

Also did you used to watch How we used to live? And that program with music on where you had to sing along? Can't remeber it's name though.

Oh yes - I had those shoes and went to a wedding in 1989 (I was 9) and was allowed to wear them as slip ons - I thought I was the height of sophistication! Of course I had secretly been wearing them as slip ons for weeks!

We used to watch Through the Dragon's Eye and Zig Zag and played Granny's garden on the old BBC computer.

    I'll be 30 in September

There were several series of How we used to live weren't there? I remember the Victorians and the second world war.

    Granny's garden was great.

We all used to convert our shoes at playtime, thought we were super cool.

Was the singing along programme called "You and Me" - set in a market with puppets or something?

There was Watch - which had loads of songs in it. We used to have the album and my brother and I used to freak ourselves out at the David and Goliath songs - especially Saul, Saul, He Was A Bad Man which had a whispered "saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuull, sssssssssssaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuullllllll" bit.

I remember How We Used to Live - the WWI one, where a soldier came back from the Boer War and was taken in as a lodger, and then the "simple" son of the working class family died in action in WWI. The daughter went to work in the factory and got green skin, and laid her wedding bouquet on the memorial. Or something. I cried my eyes out and thus started my complete inability to deal with the 1st and 2nd WW without getting emotionally involved......

That's the one I remember SJGemini. It was the Holroyds and the Selbys wasn't it? It was really sad.

I remember watch but I still think there was another music program. I need to google.

I always wanted those shoes with the swivelly strap, but was never, ever allowed them. I had sensible clarks ones with a buckle ?

How we used to live was fantastic. I used to love it.

And Watch. We used to say "We're going to watch Watch", "I'm going to watch Watch with my watch on" "I'm going to watch you watching Watch with your watch on" and think we were the height of comedic sophistication.

It was Music TIme, thank you Google.

Boy from space was Look and read, as was Dark Towers (which was really scary).

    Me too :-(

And I had to wear Mothercare brown strapped sandals instead of jelly shoes. My mother thought they were much more practical. I remember I was once allowed a blue pair or Mothercare sandals, but only after a huge amount of pestering. [poor hard-done-by-Spam] I wasn't allowed pedal pusher until they went out of fashion & were in the reduced pile at C&A [/poor hard-done-by-Spam]

Ah I remember these! I nattered and nattered my mum to buy me one of these and everyday she'd come to collect me from school I'd be hoping she'd got me one, eventually she did, it was white.....!!! Wasn't allowed jelly shoes though as my mum said they were rubbish and would ruin my feet ☹️

I had to have Clarkes shoes because they did 'width fittings' but what I really wanted was a brand which I think were called 'Birthday'. I also wasn't allowed open toed sandals because my feet would get wet. I was a complete skinny mini and no clothes fitted me so until I was quite old my mum used to buy them from mothercare and then cut the labels out so the other children wouldn't laugh at me.

I had blue jelly shoes with matching jelly bag and have a rather fetching photo of me wearing them with red socks. No, I'm not showing you lot!

I used to love Dark Towers but it did scare me witless

We had jelly shoes on holiday, for messing about in rivers and lakes, but not the pretty ones everyone else had. Oh no. we had sensible ones, with buckles! ?

My jelly shoes were buckle ones, for going in the sea. Thank you for finding Dark Towers, i will watch later and see if I'm still petrified!

I never had Birthday shoes either. My brother and I had matching brown Mothercare sandals.

C&A was considered a bit racy in the early 80s, it was M&S or BHS all the way for us.

I remember these. Down our way people had their names printed on the back neck yoke thingy.

Anyone remember counting down the time on the clocks before the school programmes started?

Watch started with an animation made out of scrunched up tissue paper moving around in some way related to the theme, did it not? Or am I getting confused...?

I had those Clarks shoes and I also used to have Starlite ones. My Gran used to make me wear Clarks shoes because I had wide feet. I felt an idiot at the time coz they all looked rubbish. I was a size 5G. I've still wide feet now but not as bad as they were then.

I also had jelly bean shoes and bag to match. My Nana even had jelly bean shoes bless her.

I used to watch How We Used to Live at primary school every week on a massive old TV on a stand. It was ace. Ah how I enjoyed those days.

I also had the brown mothercare sandals and sensible clarks shoes. I had a friend that had every colour of espadrilles - she was so cool. I did develop a rather cool collection of sunglasses, including those ones with a star or heart frame and then a dangly chain to go behind your ears with another star or heart as pretend earings. Also

Then I hit 11 and found the wonder of DASH tracksuits, I was the height of cool. Believe it or not, the late 80's only got worse for me (why did I think that a very shiny purple paisely shirt was the way forward?)
