People who leave the tap running while brushing their teeth are selfish.

People who are fit/unencumbered but who stay still on an escalator are lazy (allowing for "unseen" incapacity, of course, but surely not all fifty people on an escalator have a sprained ankle).

People who stand still and on the wrong side of an escalator are annoying.

    I guess it's because the health issues of being underweight are a lot higher than being overweight? Like, if a healthy weight is, say, 9 stone, you've only got to lose 4/5 stone to be deemed in desperate need of help (organs shutting down because they're not functioning properly etc). Whereas, to go the other way, you can gain 8/9/10/11 stone before you need drastic help.*

    *I have no scientific explanation to prove this - it's just a guess.

    How do you enforce that? You can force feed an anorexic in hospital, same as you can control what an obese person eats in hospital (to an extent), but you can't control what either of them eat when they're at home in the community.

    I have worked with patients before who were so morbidly obese they were literally a blob in a bed, who got hoisted onto a commode and then back to bed. And these are young people of about 50. What kind of life is that? And these people still try and get their families to bring them more junk food. I can't believe that kind of behaviour is just down to greed/laziness/a lack of understanding of healthy food choices.

    If only it was that black and white.

    Over eating for example, can often be a symptom of the state of someones emotional well being. it is seen a a comfort, an emotional crutch, a subsitutue for something else lacking in their lives. Much like depression, people do not necesaarily make the best choices as at that time they are emotionally incapable of doing so. It doesn't mean it is a permanent state or that they are going on to eat themselves to death which you allude to. In a lot of cases some support like counselling cures these problems as with depression.

    You say you should be prepared to be judged if you make wrong choices. I guess that depends on how you are as a person. If you see a person walking down the street you deem to be obese, how do you know if they have ended up that way as a result of number 1 or number 2? you can say you simply don't give a *** which is one opinion but generally as a society we make judgements on people (and often it goes further than that) that we have no right to as we have no idea what they may be going through in their personal lives.

    Anorexics are not simply forced to eat either. If there is medical intervention then a lot of work is done on image therapy, councilling etc.

    I think it's quite normal to make judgements about peoples' behaviours. Whether we express or suppress those judgements is another matter. And if some people (mistakenly, in my opinion) extend their judgement of the behaviour to represent their judgement of the entire person, then there can be little done. Such are people.

    I'm not in any way condoning "fat bashing" (or however Beez phrased it). If you smoke, you will be tutted at by some, pitied by others and viewed with sympathetic support from the majority. But nobody will ever tell you that smoking is OK. I don't see why obese people should employ special pleading to avoid similar.

    Perhaps we should section smokers as well?

    I think the 'fat bashing' that Beez referred to goes a bit deeper than just tutting or someone pitying another from a distance, I think she is referring more to people who think it is ok to shout abuse at someone in the street just because of their size (or indeed anything else to do with appearance). Aside from the fact that you never know someones background or history and whether or not they are happy or unhappy with the way they look, I think it is disgraceful that members of society think it is ok to verbally abuse a complete stranger just because, in their opinion, they do not conform to society's idea of attractive, or even just normal.

    I would not be allowed to walk round shouting racist comments to people in the street, why do we allow people to do it based on other physical features ?

    I know, that's why they should be abolished! On my journey into work, for example, I pass at least 5 zebra crossings and I'll have to stop at every single one of them. It's so annoying!

    I think we can almost categorically say that someone weighing 50 stone did not get there by eating 2 weetabix & a bowl of pasta a day.

    I disagree, eating one donut is better than 30 apples. There's a lot of sugar in fruit. Also I'm really not saying this to be mean, but you should be careful of the amount of fruit you eat. You seem to eat a hell of a lot of fruit and fruit is very sugary, especially if you're trying to stick to a low carb diet.

    I won't but due to convection currents that cause the air to move the gases that you exhale still can be inhaled by me. And more importantly my children. Obviously as overlord I will offer you the option of being assisted in giving up your addiction as prison is for rehabilation.

    Of course 5 apples are better than 5 donuts, but 30 apples are not better than 1 donut. And of course natural sugars are better than man made sugar, but it's still not good to have too much of either. I can imagine your sugar intake is very high with all that fruit.

    Sory but this is bullsh*t. There is no way you are eating this now but you were eating cereal and pasta before and were heavier. You were obviously lying to yourself before about what you were eating.

    Also ? I don't think I could eat the above in 3 days!

    I used to eat hardly anything at all and was told I must be lying but I was living off coca cola. I think quite often people don't realise how much sugar they are taking in through drinks.

    To continue the weight tangent that this thread has taken, why do women seem to be far more "my weight gain is emotional, I can't help but over eat" compared to men ("I am fat because I eat to much. I lost weight but cutting out the crap and doing lots of exercise")? * At what point are we no longer responsible for helping ourselves?

    I do think, as a nation, we are far too quick to blame external factors ("it's someone else's fault") for things that are primarily without our own control, whether that is weight, finances, or other issues. The reality is, as far as I see it anyway, we've never had it so good, particularly as women. It doesn't mean things can't be better, we should never stop striving for that, but I'd much rather be in my position than that of my grandmothers' or their grandmothers' when they were my age.

    *Evidence based comment as a result of two (2) whole 'Embarrassing Fat Bodies' episodes. Science, innit.

    Agree with LP, that diet is bollox. For some reason, probably because it represents more than an entire day's worth of food for me, I thought the breakfast list was the whole thing and skipped over the rest.

    Missrae, are you honestly saying that you eat, on top of the rest of it, 9 bananas a day? Do you know how much potassium that is and how dangerous, even fatal, that can be?

    In honesty, I'd be concerned if I could eat that much, do no exercise and yet maintain a normal weight. Your calorie intake is ginormous.

    Someone followed you round for 24/7 for a month?!?! Really?

    I am well aware of what is healthy and not but that is like saying I could eat one burger a day forever and be huge but eat all of the above and be lighter? Just seems like you might be exaggerating a wee bit thats all.

    I'm trying my hardest to bite my tongue, but I'm really not convinced by this either. You're telling me you had no snacks on the side? No crisps? No chocolate? No fizzy drinks?

    And again I really am not trying to be mean, but your current diet is not healthy, I can't believe any nutrionist would recommend the amount of fruit you're eating, but I think I'm fighting a losing battle with that one. I think you need to educate yourself a bit more. Sugar (even natural sugars) are a carb, and your sugar intake is extremely high for someone who intends to be on a low carb diet.

    I know this has kind of taken over the thread, but as an ex-Slimming World person, I thought I'd give my two pennies worth.

    I did SW, lost three stone, was very happy.

    But then when I got to target, I still ate a lot (as my appetite was huuuuuuuge) but the wrong things started to creep in.

    Now, I know that's my own fault, that I started eating the wrong things again, but the problem with SW is it teaches diddly squat about portion control, and kind of goes against the simple scientific equation that if calories you eat = calories you burn then your weight will remain stable.

    It definitely works, and you can lose weight on it - but losing weight isn't the easy thing at all, keeping it off is the main challenge in my opinion, and I don't think a diet like SW (or WW, or lighter life, or any of them) really teach you to maintain weight.

    Missrae I think you're eating approximately 4300 calories a day (rough estimation).

    Are you sure you have that right? It doesn't seem correct?
