Mother of the bride outfit

jen_84, 6 November, 2011 at 11:54 Posted on Planning 0 8

My mum is, um, fussy shall we say when she is trying to choose anything, so yesterday I took her unawares and went shopping with her and we came away with an outfit for the wedding for her. I think she looks lovely in it, but she didn't really want a dress (although she is not a large lady (she has tiny legs!) she does have a slightly rounded tummy, as many women in their 60s do). I persuaded her to try a few dresses as I thought we could find some that would flatter her, which we did and I think she was pleasantly surprised. We also managed to find a fascinator and a handbag to compliment the dress. She really wanted a little suit, she feels like she needs a jacket to be complete. I think the dress looks gorgeous on it's own, and because it has little capped sleeves, she doesn't need a jacket, but I obviously want her to be comfortable on the day. In addition, we are getting married in August and if it's warm (not guaranteed, I know!) she might be too hot in a jacket. Here's a picture of the dress, bad and fascinator. Can you tell me your thoughts please (is it special enough for MOTB, does she need a jacket, do you like it, etc) - be honest!

I really really like it, the dress is something that I would probably wear! It's very similar to the ones my mum is looking at also.

I think its lovely and IMO doesnt need complimenting at all dont want it to be over the top but if she would feel more comfortable maybe a pasmina or stole in the same colour would make her feel even more glam and comfy, the dress is beautiful and nice to have different colour bag/fascinator not to matchy matchy IYKWIM xx

It's a gorgeous dress, and if she likes it she should definitely go for it

I do wonder if it might be a little "young" though? My mum is in her 60s and I don't think she'd feel comfortable or look right in that.

Looks lovely to me! Really special.

I don't think the dress "needs" a jacket to complete it, BUT given the unpredictability of the weather, your mum might "need" a jacket on the day if the weather isn't co-operative particularly in the evening and I'd be much happier having the option of a suitable additional layer rather than something improvised that doesn't match. Long sleeves can make a massive difference in the evening, even if a coat is not necessary if that makes sense. Maybe some kind of black bolero would suit?

I love it and I'm nearly 60 and would definitely wear it but I can see where your Mum is coming from with regards to a jacket. It's the showing of the top of my arms thing which a lot of women of our age don't think is a good look so, if it was me wearing it, I would have an open weave type of shawl something maybe lacey or similar or perhaps a bolero which is sheer. Love the rest of the outfit too!

Thank you for all of your replies and your honesty - one of the reasons I love hitched it because you will get honest feedback! I think we may have a look for something that she can wear over the dress to make her a bit more comfortable. We've got loads of time anyway, but it's good to be organised!
