Mother of the Bride outfit

happygonicky, 13 December, 2011 at 16:49 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hello,

Whirlwind engagement here! Proposal a couple of weeks ago and we're getting married in London in March next year. Excited! We've been together eight years.

Could anyone recommend an outfit for the mother of the bride? She'd like to look really glam - obviously! - but haven't a clue where to start looking for outfits. She's a young sixty and located in south-east.

Help appreciated!

Have you got any little boutiquey places near either of you? My mum wasn't going to look until next Spring (for Summer wedding) but today we popped into a little boutique in our local city and amazingly she got a gorgeous silky satiny shift dress that looked AMAZING with a big red hat and little black jacket, and she got it for £65 as it was the last one left from the Summer collection, down from about £200.

I would say to get something unique and really special, hunt out the little personal shops rather than necessarily going for a specific desginer or chain shop.

And congratulations on your engagement - I'm a wee bit jealous about your whirlwind wedding, I'm so impatient and have pretty much everything sorted now and months to wait!

Well, my mum's a young 57, and she doesn't want any normal mother of the bride trouser suit style thing. So she's going for a 1950s style dress, nice flared skirt, in a lovely purply colour. It totally depends on your mum's style!

I had a similar problem when our daughter got married in that a lot of the outfits for Mums in bridal shops were just that....too 'mummsy'. I'm a young 59 yr old and went for this by John Charles.

They do a whole range of occasion wear which is more 'day at the races' than obviously wedding and can be worn again. If you google John Charles, it will tell you your nearest stockists. There's also Hobbs, Linear and Gina Bacconi too. After all, 60 is the new 40 !!

Some really useful points to take on board - thank you very much! Agree re mum's personal style too.

Thanks for all the help. Will join the March '12 board - am so glad we're doing it quickly!

PS And a gorgeous John Charles outfit!
