Mrs Sharks' very belated Wedding Report-a-rama!!

MrsShark, 17 November, 2011 at 16:18 Posted on Planning 0 31

Right chaps, here it is... a little later than planned but I hope it was worth the wait...!

Friday 2nd September

My birthday, and as it was such a fantastically gorgeous day, HTB and I took the day off from the unrelenting organisation of wedding stuff and went to Stratford-upon-Avon for the day. We had a lovely lunch and wander round the shops, and we enjoyed playing the ‘this time next week’ game as we ambled along the river in the evening sunshine.

Saturday 3rd – Thursday 8th September

As I was making the wedding cake and all the favours, as well as all the decorative bits, I had wisely decided to give myself the week off before the wedding so I could concentrate on all things creative.

I had (much to the amusement of my HTB, friends and family) created for myself a laminated weekly and daily checklist of things I needed to do, but I tell you, that thing was my best friend, and would thoroughly recommend that any future brides or grooms ignore the sniggers of loved ones and create one for themselves.

I had already baked the fruit cake that would be our bottom tier back in March, and had been lovingly feeding it a fortnightly diet of brandy until it was smothered in marzipan about two weeks previously. It had smelt dangerous, and I suspected that one slice could get you a 12 month ban if you drove after eating it.

I had a tight schedule of when cake tiers were being baked, iced and decorated, and also had to work into this schedule time to go and get the last bits and pieces we needed for presents and the venue, pack everything up to take (we were getting married 200 miles from where we lived, so had to be really sure that we had everything before setting off!), and have all my beauty treatments.

It was a bit mental but I loved it, I am the kind of person who, as long as I have my lists and instructions, loves having about ten things to do at any one time! It was great to get everything done, tick things off the lists as I went, and to finally see everything coming together in the way it only can do so close to the day itself! I was also amazed at how calm I felt, even amidst all the madness, but I just kept thinking that the nerves would surely kick in at some point.

Whether it was luck or because of my alarming militarian planning, everything went according to plan and we were packed up and ready to set off to Devonshire on Thursday afternoon as we hoped we would be.

We had booked a lovely plush B&B in Ilfracombe, just a few minutes up the road from our venue, exclusively for our family and friends over the wedding weekend, but it was just us and my mum and step-dad staying there on the Thursday night, so once we had all arrived we ventured out for a curry. The whirlwind of the last week combined with the long journey however made us all a bit zombified so we pretty much ate in silence before heading back to the hotel and crashing out.

Friday 9th September

The day before!!! I got up at my usual 6.30am and went for a swim, and had a blissful hour swimming in a lovely heated pool with only a small frog for company, he had snuck into the pool room and was quite happy sitting on the pool steps watching me swim up and down! It hit me as I enjoyed a nice floating moment, that this time right now was most definitely the calm before the storm, the stillness before the crazy train of unstoppable wedding STUFF started. So I floated around for a bit longer.

Eventually I thought I had better get on with it and hauled myself out of the pool and up to our room to get showered before breakfast. I was amazed to see that HTB, who will happily sleep until noon if left to his own devices, was up. He hadn’t really slept as he was so worried about his vows and speeches, we had a cuppa and a cuddle and he started to feel a bit better. He is a bit of a sensitive soul and not used to public speaking, but despite my protests that he didn’t have to do a speech at all, or at least we could one together if he was worried, he was adamant that he wanted to do it alone.

After breakfast I walked down to our venue, Tunnels Beaches, to show my dad, step-mum and auntie around as they hadn’t seen it before, and were staying in a different hotel to us. It was really nice to have a wander round and see their reaction to this amazing place, and as we left it was very strange think that tomorrow we would all be there and I would be getting married! We had a quick coffee before I headed back up to our B&B to sort out the last bits and pieces for the next day.

As I was walking back up the road, a car comes careering towards me but it wasn’t a madman behind the wheel but my grinning bridesmaid D and close friend R from New Zealand next to her, who promptly jump out and we all bounce around squealing. We jump back in the car and when we get back to the B&B I notice that during the bouncing around I unfortunately landed in some dog poop, that I have now transferred to D’s car... cue much gagging and laughing.

Once shoes and cars have been cleaned, and we had sorted out the hotel rooms, D & R decide to have a lie-down as they had a really early start, so HTB and I decide to give my mum and step-dad their thank you present before everyone else arrived. We had got them a Red Letter Day experience for a tour and afternoon tea at Shakespeare’s Globe as well as a few other bits and pieces and mum had a bit of a blubbing attack, the first of many over the weekend!

HTB went to sort his stuff out, he was staying with some friends in Ilfracombe that night and needed to drop his bag off at their house before they went to work at 6pm, but I think it was really an excuse to have a bit of time away from the madness.

Mum, R and I camped out in the sitting room to sort out the favours. I had made three different types of chocolates; Gin & Tonic Truffles, Limoncello Creams and Chilli Chocolate Fudge that all needed portioning into little bags and tied with twine. The three of us sat like little buddhas surrounded by piles of little bags of chocolates and had a lovely few hours catching up.

When we had finished it was about 5pm and some of the people who were staying had started arriving, so we went up to say hello. The owners of the B&B had arranged a buffet for the Friday night and said we could invite people who were staying elsewhere over for a little pre-wedding warm-up. We loved this idea as most of our guests had travelled big distances to come to the wedding and so were staying in Ilfracombe on the Friday night as well, so it was just another excuse for a party!

HTB and I grabbed a moment to take my dad and step-mum to our room to give them their present, we had got them a Red Letter Day experience to go to Vinopolis, the perfect gift for a pair of old winos! I also decided to give my bridesmaids, D, K & L their presents as I knew it would all be a bit crazy in the morning. I had put together a little ‘Bridesmaid Survival’ goody bag of Liz Earle treats, chocolate, glucose tablets, tissues, necklaces and earrings, which they all loved.

It was a great night, and gave most of our guests a chance to get to know each other before the wedding, but any idea that arranging it to start at 6.30pm might mean that it would be an early night was optimistic... especially when it came to the best man B and the ushers J and W who stayed up drinking until 1am! We finally kicked HTB out at about 12.30am, and I felt a bit sad watching him walk down the road on his own.

I said goodnight to everyone still up and closed the door of my bedroom, it felt odd but very nice to have some peace. I did a bit of tidying up and then fell into bed. I sent HTB a text to check he had got to our friends ok, and answered a few messages I hadn’t had chance to during the day. I still felt completely calm and went to sleep wondering at what point the nerves may kick in...

    Saturday 10th September

I had set my alarm for 6.30am but woke at about 6.15am and so just enjoyed a few minutes of lying there and grinning to myself before getting up.

I still felt calm but was just starting to feel a little bit tense when I thought about everything that needed doing...so decided to do one of my workout DVDs, as exercise always helps focus my busy mind. Yes, I had brought it with me as I had a feeling that I may need it!

After I was done, it was still only 7.30am so had a long, luxurious shower, and then finished off my handmade ‘to my husband’ card before going down for breakfast.

The B&B owners had put all the tables in the dining room together so we all sit together, which was a lovely touch, and we all chatted about the day and the logistics of what needed to be done when. I gave the best man and ushers HTB’s present to give to him and also gave them their laminated ‘to do’ list, which seemed to terrify them!

We set off down to the venue at about 9.45am to set up all the bits and pieces before the girls and I headed up to the hairdressers. The beauty of where we were getting married was that it was easy walking distance to get everywhere!

My mum, bridesmaids K, L & D, friends S & C and I all headed down to Tunnels Beaches to set up. I had packed everything for each area in small archive boxes with everything labelled with where it had to go...and I tell you, being a perfectionist control freak really does pay off as we had the favour table, photo tree table, cake table and table decorations all done in under an hour!

I sent the bridesmaids up to the hairdressers and the others back to get ready, and just as I was finishing up a very dapper chap walked in and I just knew he had to be our photographer Nick. I had spoken to him on the phone, and had very funny email conversations with him but this was the first time we had met, but I just knew it had to be him, and we had a big hug and a bit of an excited bounce.

I left him at Tunnels scoping out the best photo places and headed up to the hairdressers. When I checked the time I saw I actually had 20 minutes before my slot, so decided to nip to the shop as I always get The Times on a Saturday so just thought "I better get it now as I probably won’t have chance later". When I walked into the hairdressers they all looked at me as if I was mad, and that is when I realised that maybe going to buy a paper on the morning of your wedding is not that normal after all!

The girls at the hairdressers were lovely, and said that I was probably the most relaxed bride they had ever seen. Nick arrived and started snapping away, and then the florist arrived with the flowers for our hair and she explained that they were very rare cream narine lilies, and also thanked me for giving her such artistic freedom with our wedding flowers, she had really enjoyed creating them, which was lovely to hear. All we had specified was that we wanted all the flowers to be completely seasonal and sourced from local producers in neutral colours, so actually had no idea what we would be getting until the day!

My stepdad arrived to take us back to the B&B where the owners had arranged lunch to be brought up to my room so we could munch as we got ready. I wasn’t really hungry but was force fed cous-cous and pasta salad by my bridesmaids, which was quite funny. HTB had sent my present back to the B&B with the boys so I opened it; he had got me the Jo Malone body cream to match my wedding day perfume, some beautiful silver earrings and a fantastic handmade card that made me cry!

Then it all went a bit mental, bridesmaid D is a trained beautician (very useful but not the only reason I asked her to be bridesmaid!) so she shouted at me to sit down so she could finish off my nails and get my make-up done. Nick gatecrashed the girly party and was having a whale of a time snapping away at the chaos.

One word of advice I would give all future brides is to get into your underwear before you have your nails touched up and make up done, unless you want to relive the comedy moment I had where I had to enlist my bridesmaid D to pull up my knickers for me! Anyway we managed it and got my dress on, which thankfully was a very straightforward dress to get into.

It was now about 2pm and the best man and ushers came in to say goodbye as they were heading down to the Tunnels, just as the heavens opened and it absolutely poured down. The weather had been very warm but mixed sunshine and showers all day Friday and Saturday so far, but everyone just looked at me now with horrified expressions...which just made me laugh! Our venue always set up for an outdoor ceremony unless the weather really turns, and they swap it for an indoor ceremony. Either way it would be amazing so I just shrugged and said, “the weather will do what it will do!” to the assembled doomsayers.

We had time for some quick photos with the girls and with dad before hopping into the car down to Tunnels.

My mum had hatched up a plan with my boss to use his car (a nice shiny Audi) to take us down to the venue if the weather turned a bit iffy, I was happy to call a cab as it was only two minutes down the road, but mum wouldn’t hear of it, she just said that she would sort something out! I had no idea until I stepped out that it would be my boss’ car and that they would have decorated it with ribbons! When we arrived at Tunnels the Registrar was waiting for us outside to go through the legal bumpf and it had thankfully stopped raining. We walked down the tunnel but had to wait for a little while as the staff had decided to move the guests back outside when it stopped raining so we had to wait for everyone to be seated.

(Bridesmaid D is trying to straighten up my dress and I am wagging my finger at Nick saying “Don’t you take a picture of this you monkey!”)

Then the music started (Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole) and we sent my mum down first with my brother J escorting her. Next was my nephew A as pageboy and my friends little girl L as flowergirl, both five and looking very cute. L was really excited and was bouncing around, and A made us all laugh as he turned to her and said “stop being silly” just before they walked down hand in hand! Then the bridesmaids went down one by one, each looking fantastic...then it was my turn.

Dad turned to me, smiled and said “Ready?” I think I gave a little squeal, but I can’t be sure and just remember walking out from the tunnel and seeing a whole load of people standing up and looking at us! I just kept focussing on the gazebo where HTB was standing and was doing really well until halfway down the ‘aisle’ my dad leaned over and said “I love you”, which very nearly made me lose it completely!

I got to the gazebo and couldn’t help giving HTB a big squeeze and a kiss as he looks so handsome and nervous!

We had already had a copy of the ceremony, and knew that the Registrar was planning to say some beautiful words, and we both thought that the ceremony was the nicest civil ceremony we had ever heard, but on the day I barely heard a word. I couldn’t stop smiling, and kept clutching onto my bouquet as I wasn’t sure where to put it down! As well as the official vows, we had also opted to write our own individual ones, and HTB’s were hilarious – he mentioned that I was the Princess Leia to his Han Solo and that he was lucky that Ewan McGregor lived far, far away (I do have a rather unhealthy crush on him!) and everyone was in stitches. They did have a more serious side too as he talked about how I give him the strength to be who he wants to be, and that he has never loved anyone how he loves me. My vows to him were full of the same and I spotted Mum having a bit a blub!

We sat down to sign the register and looked up to see a whole sea of faces grinning and taking photos, then our flowergirl L ran into the gazebo and launched an attack with her basket of petals, which was hilarious.

We stood up and everyone started clapping, which the staff took as a cue to start our exit music (One Love by Bob Marley), but it was too early so they faded it out when they realised the Registrar still had to announce us as Mr & Mrs C! It all worked out well though as it meant that we walked back up the aisle to Sigur Ros’ Hoppipolla, which was the next track on our playlist, just as the sun came beaming around the cliffside...perfect.

The next few hours passed in a sunny blur of gin & tonic, champagne, scones with clotted cream and jam and congratulations!

Nick snuck me and the husband down to the public beach to get some nice shots before gathering everyone for a group shot on the terrace. We then went down to the private beach to take the family and wedding party shots, and the resulting photos really tell the story of what fun we were all having.

The venue co-ordinator Josh decided to move us all inside for the speeches, as the sky was starting to look a bit iffy again and lo and behold, about five minutes later the heavens opened! We had decided to get the speeches out of the way as soon as possible so my dad, hubby and best man could relax. Dad’s speech was beautiful, very touching and without half the jokes I thought it would have. Hubby had been sooooo nervous about his speech and he was shaking when he stood up but it was fabulous, exactly the right mix of comedy and sentiment, and I was so proud.

    (Hubby’s very mean speech notes!)

The poor best man though, as he had to follow it! We knew he hadn’t really practised anything, but being the charming sod he is, he totally got away with it and pulled another blinder for a hat-trick of excellent speeches.

The sun had come out again and Nick was itching to get back down to the beach for some sunset shots before we cut the cake and the food was served up.

The venue only does BBQ buffets and we had made the bold move of opting for a complete vegetarian menu, and they did us proud. Everything looked fantastic, and even the hardened meat-eaters amongst our guests said how delicious it all was.

After we had eaten, hubby had the brainwave of doing our first dance outside on the terrace, which was wonderful as everyone could gather on the three levels to watch. We had chosen Harry Connick Jnr’s ‘I Could Write A Book’ as this was the first song we ever danced to together, but had also decided to add a little twist by adding the Star Wars Cantina music onto the end, which was great fun and made everyone roar with laughter, but I don’t think either of us realised how long it was, and after a few minutes we were exhausted!

Then it was my dance with dad, and I think he was already slightly ‘pickled’ but we enjoyed a quick shuffle around the terrace, and it apparently provoked quite a flurry of tears from my mum, step-mum and some of our old family friends. Then the floor opened with our music man Brendan playing a live guitar set that got everyone dancing outside in the moonlight, with any rain showers were quickly defeated with the venue’s huge white golf umbrellas.

One of our friends had brought 100 melody pop lollies and at one stage everyone had one and the resultant din was extraordinary!

I remember looking up at one point and seeing that people seemed a little thin on the ground before being told that it was nearly 12.30am!

We said a few goodbyes and as people were leaving they all seemed so happy and full of “that was the best wedding EVER!”

I had to rescue my dad and step-mum as the ushers were trying to convince them to go clubbing, then everyone walked back up to the B&B together. The madness had finally caught up with me and now I felt exhausted and just wanted to chill out with hubby, but everyone descended on our room. I suddenly remembered that my old friend R would be leaving early to fly back to New Zealand so needed to say goodbye, but on hearing that our room had been invaded she promptly put on her dressing gown and marched downstairs to order everyone out!

Finally it was just my hubby and me. The bridesmaids and other friends had decorated the room with balloons and candles so we sat and played balloon tennis and laughed about our perfect day...

    Sunday 11th September

We actually woke quite early and decided that we would go down to breakfast to see everyone else, but when we got down we were the first ones there!

There were a few broken souls at the breakfast table but everyone was in good spirits. We milled around saying goodbye to the people who were leaving and it seemed really odd and very sad to wave goodbyeafter such a lovely time together.

My mum, step-dad, hubby and I were staying on at the B&B the Sunday night and we had arranged to go to our friends restaurant for lunch with anyone who was hanging around, which was about sixteen of us in the end.

Lunch was excellent and we all laughed about the mad dancing and enthusiastic inflatable instrument playing from the night before before saying our farewells to everyone else. Mum, step-dad, hubby and I headed back to the B&B for a well deserved chill-out, and hubby and I promptly fell asleep watching DVD’s. Rock and Roll.

So that was it, and it really was the best day of our lives - so much fun and love and laughter.

A big thank you has to go to our family and friends who all battled horrible journeys to be there with us.

Also to Tunnels Beaches, which is the most exceptional venue, run by the most exceptional people.

A huge big up to our photographer Nick White Images who managed to capture the essence of the day so well. If you want to see the full set go to https://www.flickr.com/photos/nickwhiteimages/sets/72157627804591031/

    Thanks for reading peeps!
