M&S £20 Meal Deal - am I missing out?

Roobarb, 13 February, 2009 at 18:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 44

I popped into M&S earlier and the crowds of people swarming round the meal deal displays were unreal, I thought initially I must have been missing out on a freebie, and then I realised that it wasn't even the £10 it normally is, but £20! I think they are giving posher wine than normal and also a rose...

I buy the £10 deal sometimes cos I think it's not bad, you can get £16 - £17 worth of stuff for a tenner but was quite amazed to see so many hordes of people shelling out £20 for ready meals, effectively. Is it just me?

I don't think you're missing out at all.

I went in this morning to see what there was as I usually get the £10 deal as well and I didn't think that what they were selling extra was enough to justify the extra £10 at all.

We've still got loads of wine in anyway from Christmas and the other M&S deals so it really wasn't worth it for us.

I've just looked at the menu online and it's a lot "posher" than the usual deals - sirloins or dover sole for mains, scallops starter option etc. So I expect you prob could still save a bit on individual prices if that's your thing.

My mum and dad bought one today and I must admit the steaks they chose looked lovely.

They got three courses, a bottle of fizz (usually £9) and a single rose (my dad told them they wouldn't bother with that but the cashier made him go and get it like a chastised school boy ?)

Individually it would have cost £30 ish I think.

I think it has it's place - my mum and dad cook from scratch every day and they'd prefer a 'night off' and have the convenience of Mr Sparks doing it for them. [Shrug]

Nothing says romance like a free meal deal rose ? Do you think it's so you can recreate the restaurant experience of having an irritating rose seller shoving his wares in your face?

No KN, nothing says romance like a £2 bunch of red roses from Asda. Or an enormous padded sateen and lace card with a teddy on it that a young boy was buying in the shop today. I'll bet it was about £30 as well.

I work there but not on the food department..Some people do get a good deal buying £35 worth of food for £20 also you do not have to have the rose you can have a small selection of chocolate.

    I got the deal yesterday.

We rarely ever shop at marks, a bit too expensive for us, so we do see it us a treat. They do have nice food this time, but I struggled to get a starter as I am pregnant(so that ruled out camembert and pate) and H doesnt like fish!

But I did find one and looking forward to it tomorrow. When scanned through the till she did say that I had saved £11. Pretty good in my book!

Not big on Valentine's day but I like food and wine so went to have a look yesterday after work. There is enough food for H for the main (steak and nice chips) and got some salmony things for starter and a pud. I'll make myself something for main. H frowned suspiciously at the rose and thinks someone in my new job gave it to me ? Hope the fizz is nice. Receipt says it's £32 something without the deal.

I agree Janna that it has its place - as I said I've bought the tenner deal a few times myself and it's not bad. I was just particularly amazed that it attracted the hordes of people it did - honestly, it was like a scrum for the last turkey on Christmas Eve.

We often buy the £10 deal and yesterday bought the £20 deal, it looks lovely.

Starter is Camembert, then steak (looks gorgeous) and chips, somethingy chocolate for pudding (same as on the advert) and a bottle of chablis too.! Oh and a rose!

Dad says he saw Tesco are doing simlar for £15,

At quarter past seven this morning my dad phoned my husband to see if he (husband) could pick one up so my dad can "cook" dinner for my mum tomorrow night. Husband has had to do a "dead drop" and sneak into my parent's garage to leave it there so dad can "acquire" it as a suprise.

I'm not actually convinced my mum will be hugely impressed, but I'm keeping well out of it...

I popped in there to pick up some of their chinese for dinner tonight (it was on 3 for 2) and it was absolutely mobbed around the £20 meal deal stands. I had a brief look but to be honest there wasn't a great deal left so I stuck with the chinese instead.

We sometimes get the £10 deal, especially if they include a chicken as we can get a couple of nice meals and if it's a particularly large chook fillings for a day's sandwiches too.

I was glad to get out of M&S today, it was heaving and they'd taken up half of one aisle with a table and chairs set out like a romantic dinner and had awful music playing that was doing my head in. I only went in there to kill time and get some hot cross buns for MissSun.

I did enjoy watching the man on the 5 items or less til tell a woman she had to go and queue at another checkout cause she had about 20 items in her trolley ?

I got both the meal deal (scallops + chorizo, steak & new potatoes + chocolate soufle type thingies + the most blousy pink and white rose!) and the opportunity to use my favourite line to a rude person

"Here on Planet Polite, we say 'Excuse Me'."

I think I'm either sad or organised as I went yesterday but even then (after work) it was very busy but they had loads of displays. Didn't know you could get chocs instead of the rose.

I got scallops, steak & chips, choc souffle, rose cava and rose would have been £32.74 so quite a saving and all looks delicious.

I went at 5 today and there was hardly anything left!!

Got pate to start which SB loves anyway, will get some nice bread tomorrow, 2 x steaks, big side salad (got homefries in the freezer ) and melty middle choc puds. Oh and rose cava and a rose! Which is in a glass on my window sill looking lovely.

I did think I looked like a total loser walking through victoria with a rose + M+S bag on my own...

My ex used to buy those cards for me ? Not only did I get gigantic cards for valentines day, but I'd get them for birthdays and christmas too. He thought they were the height of sophistication. I had loads of the bloody things before I saw the light....?

It works very well if you follow it up with a sesame street style query (when they look blankly at you) "can you say 'excuse me?' - 'EXCUSE ME!'" - in a 'co-operation' kind of way!

I got to m&s just as it opened this morning. I was surprised how many people were waiting outside and they already had the charity kids ready to ambush packing when I got to the till.

I got the Camembert & Bruschetti, Steak Rump and Peppercorn Sauce ,New Potatoes, Triple Chocolate Desserts, Malbec Reserve and the mint chocolate selection instead of the rose.

That is exactly what I got ,only I got a different wine. I'm annoyed now as I didn't know you could get chocs instead of the rose. I feel sad that I've kind of bought my own rose now!

Oh dear. MrH is cooking tonight. I am making pud. we have just got together and realised we are making:

    scollops wrapped in bacon

    steak, chips and ceaser salad

    chocolate moouse cake

    red wine.

I am pretty sure we have spent over £20- and except for the steak and scollops it is from Lidl.

Mind you MrH also bought me a single rose, but its a beautiful Amnesia rose as we had at our wedding- single red roses also remind me of those murkey men who come into pubs in the west end trying to flog you roses.

Well I went to the Aberdeen one this morning,

And only bought the new potatoes and the choc souffles you see in the advert out of the deal. Bought other bits as there was not much choice left and the roses were certainly not "Stunning" as they say in the advert. They all looked half dead and not even worth the £2.99 if you didn't get it in the deal.

2 courses, a paper , milk and bread all came to less than £15 and I have plenty wine in the house.

I wish they just made 1 whole aisle the offer rather than spread out across 6 end bays. It was a bit of a scrum with peeps saying "where are the starters/puddings?"

I bought one of the waitrose deals, same quality starters, mains, side and desserts for £10. Not as much choice but saved around £9. I got salmon terrine (i think!), steak with bernaise butter, chunky chips and Gu puddings.

I wish we'd known there was a chocolate alternative to the rose.

We got the camembert starter, steak for main with mediterranean side dish, triple chocolate dessert and rose cava. It's all a bit tongue in cheek and we're loving it. We also got some normal priced thin and crispy oven chips and a bottle of prosecco.

Last year H spent a fortune on a meal out. This year we're rather skint so tonight we're going to light the candles, put on some cheesy music and eat our cheesy food, for less than £27 (and that's assuming we have the second bottle of wine). Brilliant!!

Well as Im a lazy git I didnt get to M&S (I would have loved those choccy puds they show on the advert) However, I made some lovely creamy chicken and sweetcorn soup yesterday, I have rib eye steak in the freezer, and spuds that I can cream with some cheese and leeks. That will do! Im also over run with wine at the mo with about 80 bottles of the stuff to quoff, so we are not short on the old alcofrol!

So tonight its chicken and sweetcorn soup to start, rib eye with cheesy leek mash and whatever wine we fancy. Sod the pudding, Im happy with a Lindor choc that Mr WT gave me!

My husband bought, Scallops and Chorizo, Rump steak and Chunky chips, Raspberry Panacotta and a bottle of chablis and a white rose. I think it would have cost about £35 normally and I had actually said I would like Scallops and Steak on valentines night in the week so it works for us
