Mulled wine in a slow cooker

Cherry Garcia, 13 November, 2010 at 11:13 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Yay or Nay?

I've got some in for tonight as I'm having a few friends round and I'm wondering whether it would be ok to bung it in the slow cooker and leave it all day, rather than having to watch it on the stove. It's ready made stuff so it just needs heating. What do you think?

I plan on doing this in a few weeks. Can't see any reason why not.

In one of my slow cooker recipe books, there is a recipe for mulled wine so it's no different to that.

Well was going out but H now taking an age to get himself off the sofa and get ready. I have 2 recipes:

    Mulled cranberry and red wine

    75cl bottle inexpensive red wine

    600ml (1 pint) cranberry juice

100ml brandy, rum, vodka or orange liquer

    100g caster sugar

    1 orange

    8 cloves

1-2 cinnamon sticks (depending on size)

To serve, 1 orange cut into segments and a few fresh cranberries

    Instructions:

Pour the red wine, cranberry juice and brandy or other alcohol into the slow cooker put. Stir in the sugar.

Stud the orange segments with a clove. Break the scinnamon sticks into large pieces and add to the pot with the orange pieces. Cover with thelid and cook on high for 1 hour. Reduce the temperature and cook on low for 3-4 hours.

Replace the orange segments with new ones and add the cranberries. Ladle into heatproof glasses

For mulled orange and red wine instead of cranberry, replace the cranberry juice with 300ml orange juice and 300ml water.

    The other recipe is for:

    Spiced mulled wine

    About 20 cloves

    2 oranges

    4 cinnamon sticks

75cl bottle good quality full-bodied red wine

    150ml ginger wine

3-4tbsp redcurrant jelly or to taste.

Push the cloves - pointed edge first - into the skin of one of the oranges. Peel the zest from the other orange with a vegetable peeler, then cut it in half and squeeze the juice.

Put the studded orange, zest and juice into the slow cooker dish followed by the cinammon, red and ginger wines. Cover with the lid and cook on high for 2 hours.

Add the redcurrant jelly to tast and stir until dissolved. Ladle into small cups or heatproof glasses to serve.
