music memories

NickJ, 19 September, 2008 at 10:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 50

Following the rock song thread, i was just listening to an itunes playlist, and turned on the new "genius" function. i hit one song, then the button, and it came up with soft cell "tainted love" ? and i was immediately transported back to 1987, and trying to get into catherine norman's knickers - it was on her car radio, a mark II pale blue escort ? i feel old ?

share your music associations and make me feel better ?

    Ooh tainted love, classic!

I had a boyfriend in the 1st yr of uni, he was a final year pharmacy student. we got together early December and we were both into dance music - his fav song at the time was "9pm Til I come" ?

Anyway we used to go clubbing a lot and went out on valentines day with a group of friends to a big club. it was 2am and they were playing that song, we were sat at a table and he proceeded to dump me whilst the song was playing, so he was basically shouting at the top of his voice that he needed to "concentrate on his studies". Not funny at the time, but now I find it hilarious ?, especially when it was on the radio the other day.

I love the new genius thing.

My memory is Transvision Vamp I dont care. Under 18s disco at the Rococco Club. I was too cool for school, dressed up in my giant trainers, hoody and tracky bottoms. Age 13.

1987? I think I was listening to All Aboard, and the ugly duckling song. ?

I was flicking around youtube the other day, following a link from a newsletter, and ended up on New Model Army, Vagabonds, which took me right back to about 1994, at the back of the Hatfield Forum, snogging random indie boys with DMs and floppy hair.

In 1987 I was 13 and got myself a reputation for snogging the boys at the school Christmas disco ??

In my defence, the year previously some of the attractive lads had gone around with bits of mistletoe and given pecks on the cheek and that was what I was aiming for. I was rather naively surprised when the tongues started flying ?<ahem>

It took me years to live that one down, everyone thought I was a right slapper (still do in my home town) despite me living the life of a nun.

Songs of note were: 'You don't have to take your clothes off', 'don't leave me this way', 'In the Army now' and 'French Kissing in the USA' ?

When I was 12 my boyfriend was a 18year old wannabe punk / cool / rebel. He was against boybands and the like. He took me out to the park where he drew pictures of me and we listened to The Sex Pistols "Anarchy" on his tape cassette player.

Every time I hear it now I think of him. He died of a heroin overdose about 8 years ago.

That song reminds me of my first ever 18-30s style holiday. I was 16 and a group of us went to Shagaluf. I copped off every night and fell in love with a guy called Lee and was from Bangor in Northern Ireland.

    1987... I was 8 ?

I was obsessed by Status Quo, in particular the song Margherita Time - my Grandad had the LP and I had invented my own dance to it and everything!

I popped my cherry to "Don't come the cowboy with me sonny Jim" - still brings back fond memories.

Roll with it - Oasis, is the booze cruise to France where I told G&T I loved her.

Anything on Surfer Rosa by the Pixies reminds me of that one perfect summer, blasting round Surrey with my mate Rob in his mk I Golf.

I've only a tiny ipod for the gym, Mr 123 changed the music a week or two ago, and put The Wonderstuff Hup on there. Doesn't take me to a particular moment, but a terribly misspent youth. I've since googled Miles Hunt to discover he'd doing an accoustic tour of the UK in November, so I'm off to see him again!

    I must look into that.

Hup and This is the day (PWEI) were the soundtracks to my teens.

I'm so not happy that I knew nothing of the 20th anniversary gig at Shepherds Bush. Tickets are now going on e bay for £300.

I saw them a couple of times (back in the day) at Brixton academy. I'm not sure it would be the same 20 years on.

Seen Miles live a few times now... Beware... He can be a wee tad cynical about the W.S. Days, enough to put you on a downer if you were really into them.

He plays a few of the tunes, but tends to follow them up with slightly caustic comments... Do Not cheer or clap overly loudly after Room 512.

They were my favourite gigs. I saw them so many times at Barrowlands (when i had to sneek in because it was an 18 and I really wasnt).

I kind of agree that it wouldnt be the same, maybe i should just turn the music up and dance in my house.

interesting, I wonder what happened, his myspace suggests he was working with them again. I've ordered a couple of his newer albums. Rather looking forward to it now ?

I'm going to have to go and root out some old PWEI and Swervedriver tapes now, I'd completely forgotten about them!
