Music suggestions please

monkey fingers, 8 June, 2009 at 18:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

Hello all

I am trying to fill up my iTouch with lots of music for when I am in hospital.

I want relaxing stuff, I love lyrics with meaning, I like to be able to sing along too (though will control myself when others are on the ward)

I love Counting Crows, Sarah Mclclachlan (I know that is spelt wrong!) Killers, Snow patrol, Beth Rowley.... and lots more

I have just purchased some Sister Hazel, not listened properly yet, but what i have heard, I like

I'd actually quite like some more female artists (so when I am high as a kite i can pretend it is me singing)

So does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you very much in advance x

Look up "The Other Side" and "Start Swimming" by Delain - Dutch band who usually do heavier stuff, but these songs are slower and very intense. MP3s available on Amazon.

Also, how about some Tori Amos? Cornflake Girl, Spark etc - great for warbling along to and certainly meaningful.

Thank you GWTW, will certainly look at Delain.

I've never really 'got' Tori Amos, i think i am a bit shallow as I like the meaning of the lyrics to be glaringly obvious! I may give her another try though as it has been years since i last listened to her

    Thank you again x

She is a bit of an acquired taste ?

Lucy Silvas' first album might be up your street too.

What about Martha Wainwright? The album "I know you're married but I've got feelings too" is good. I don't know the lyrics well enough to comment on meaning but I do enjoy singing along to the bits I know.

What about Alison Krauss? Her latest album 100 miles or More is absolutely spellbinding - she is a bluegrass/country lass and it's from that direction but her voice makes me want to cry. Why can't I sing like her? ?

The first Emliana Torrini album Fishermans woman is good, and the Isobel Campbell/Mark Lanagan album Ballad of Broken Seas.

For male singers try King Creosote - everything he's done is brilliant, Sheffield's finest Richard Hawley and another favourite of mine, Sufjan Stevens. All very singable too with a bit of something more to the lyrics

How about The Flaming Lips? There's a gorgeous track called "Do you realize" that I love. Another great album is by Arcade Fire. And I love the new Yusuf Islam song called "Thinking 'bout you"

I just bought a new album by The Mummers. There's a female vocalist who has a Bjorky sound, accompanied by big epic lush string and brass orchestrations.... quite circussy in its way, but also v laid back, v rich and vibey. MOST def one to hear while you're whacked on any pain killers they may offer you!!! I haven't heard it enough times through to notice any sing a long tunes yet - but i bought on the strength of hearing a track on the radio - so there must've been something catchy about it...

Also - big recommendation for Paloma Faith. She's like a sober version of winehouse but i think she'd balk at the comparison. Her new single (first single) is out on the 15th. I don't think the album's ready yet - but the single is called stone cold sober. She's also had a track on a drink driving campaign tv ad... possibly the same track given the name - not sure. I saw her live last summer by chance and was massively impressed. She's most definitely going to be a big one to watch in the next yr or so.

    HTH ! x

I shall have to email you some of my cousin's songs, she's a lovely singer and writes her own stuff, some of which I have on my computer.

MrD recently purchased the new album by Bat for Lashes - she has a really beautiful voice - a bit Bjorky/Cranberryish. Definitely one you can wail/sing along to.

I love Natalie Merchant and in particular the album Ophelia. If you like Sarah Mc. I think you'll like her too.

David Sylvian's solo stuff, especially Secrets of the Beehive.

If you can find a track online called 'Who's trip is this' that has his wife singing the lyrics, that's fab and very mellow.
