Music to walk down the aisle to

Meggiemoo1981, 16 October, 2011 at 17:16 Posted on Planning 0 21

Hi,

What/who are you having to play music while you're walking down the aisle? Violin? Piano? I'm tempted to have a saxophonist but don't know whether this would be as romantic as a violin?

My little brother is going to play the trumpet! Not as romantic as strings but means a lot to me.

I'm having an organ. No idea yet what they'll be playing. I do know it won't the obvious pieces by Mendelssohn, Wagner or Pachelbel though. Just can't find a piece that i like and is 'walkable'!

All your song and music choices sound lovely! I'm having a harpist and she's going to play Kissing You from Romeo and Juliette as I walk down the aisle!

I had a piano version of the Bridal March - a bit similar to the Jonathan Cain version but without the strings.

I really don't know what to have. We'll be hiring the church organist so we could have a tune played on that but part of me wants something different. Wish I knew somebody musical. Maybe I should play myself down the aisle? ?

A saxophone can sound just as intimate as a violin. What's crucial, if you want an intimate sound for your wedding, though, is to avoid saxophonists and violinists, or any musicians to that matter, who play to backing tracks. And pick your own music for the ceremony, rather than having it foisted upon you - it's the first thing you and your guests will hear.

I think I can argue the above point completely. I am a professional saxophonist myself and without having an accompaniment, I don't believe you will ever sound as beautiful musically. Whenever I have performed at weddings, I have said that I am willing to play without an accompaniment but they will never ever sound as good without having a good backing with you as you can bring more emotion into the song. I have never had anybody disappointed with my performances and I use backing tracks. The difference is to not have a backing track which sounds tinny; full instrumental backing tracks can really enhance a musicians performance whatever the style of music.

Having said all that, it's whatever the bride and groom love the sound of that counts. Whether they prefer music with or without backing.

    Jo

@jordas20 - I've been to ceremonies where there's been a saxophonist and the Bride and Groom pick their choice of songs from a repetoire list supplied by the saxophonist. The saxophonist doesn't or shouldn't pick what they want to play. If they're any good, they can play anything.

To the OP, I recommend www.breathtakingmusic.com for a saxophonist.

I've recently booked a lovely violinist and we're having Canon in D for the ceremony too. We're having a range of different music before and during signing of the register (some choices won't go down well I feel but meh!!!)

I think cost can be a factor when making this decision. The violinist was already slightly more than we'd budgeted for but she sounds fantastic. She does play to a backing track and, quite frankly, I can live with that. As long as it doesn't sound like someone is dragging their fingers down a blackboard and the music is beautiful then I'll be happy. To be honest, I wouldn't imagine I'll care that much!!! I'll be far more focussed on my (hopefully) happy husband to be!!!
