Musing on brands...

pandorasbox, 12 September, 2012 at 20:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 25

Rimmelgate thread got me thinking - have any 'luxury' or designer brands really disappointed you? (NB I am aware I may just have really weird tastes/an uneducated palate)

Thinking about make up, I tried the YSL touche eclat everyone raves about, and thought it was rubbish on my skin - didn't work at all and looked ridiculous.

Givenchy eyeshadows are also pathetic, I have tried a few of the prisms and really disliked the texture. Similar feeling about their lip glosses.

In terms of general products, I always feel let down by 'luxury' ranges in any supermarket. The food is never as delicious as they make out.

I had some Moet champagne that was a wedding gift, we were really looking forward to trying it but actually couldn't tell the difference between that and a regular cheapo one.

I thought of something else too gadget-related that inspired me to write the thread, but now can't remember what it was.

This! I wanted one for years and finally got a tester. I was really disappointed, it just looked flaky.

I also prefer cheap instant coffee, but I know this is weird!

It is an interesting one and will always come down to personal preference I guess!

I will food wise (with the basics) eat most things- doesn't have to be lurpak or kelloggs or heinz etc- I am happy with a lot of own brand stuff! But with meat I will spend more for choicer cuts as I am quite fussy about it.

My main thing is that toilet roll has to be quilted for me- the other half would wipe his bum with anything I think ?

Not fussy really, I use quite basic make up, whatever I can afford, I dont wear it often so spending a lot of money on makeup -for me- is silly. Food wise im not fussy. I like cheap white bread though. Makes good toasties!

Louis Vuitton, Foxtons, Moet, Tiffany and Lancome (specifically their Juicy Tubes, far too sticky!) are all brands I dislike.

It absolutely MUST be Heinz baked beans and ketchup!

I always feel let down by shampoo, no matter how much I spend, my hair never looks 'shiny and managable' it is still a mop *sob*

And toothpaste, they never really whiten your teeth.

And anti-perspirant-deoderant, I still sweat, and I still whiff after a gym session.

I was really dissapointed with Chanel's new foundation which replaced an old favourite. It put me in a grump for a whole afternoon.

Posh chocolate, no matter how expensive, it can never beat Cadbury dairy milk!

The only brands that I really don't like are celebrity perfumes. Slapping Britney or J-Lo's name on it is not going to make me buy it.

I generally hate all American fashion designers not them personally or because they are American obviously but because I don't like their style of clothes.

    Tommy Hilfiger

    Ralph Lauren

Tom Ford (own label and his Gucci Lines)

Marc Jacobs (own label and went off Dior when he was their creative director)

    I just don't get it.

❤️ Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Alexander Mcqueen and Vivienne Westwood❤️

I'm with ducky about expensive chocolates dairy milk any day.

Ducky- have you tried the dove maximum strength anti perspirant ? It's a cream stick, not a spray or roll on. It's by far the best one I've ever had. They've just started to do a variety of fragrances too.

Chanel foundation - rubbish, too oily. Made my skin look as though it had been rubbed with a greasy chip paper!

Expensive shampoos - pants, pure pants. They don't do anything that any other regular cheap shampoo can't do!

Fussy toothpastes - meh, toothpaste is toothpaste.....

Finest/Extra Special/Be good to yourself - tasteless disappointments!!!!!

Haha I don't actually sweat much at all. I never get sweat patches under my arms, even after working out. It's just they say they will keep you fresh and dry for 24/48 hours etc. Well, my armpits still get a bit wet, and they still smell a bit 'armpitty mixed with deodorant' by the end of a hot day.

I have tried Mitchum but its a bit harsh on my skin and made my underarms dry. I haven't tried the super-duper Dove version, but I'm not that bothered, I was just merely pointing out how the deodorant company mislead you!

The best bottle of Rose I have found so far is £2.49 from tesco!! I love it and its cheap.

I do only like Clover or proper butter instead of marg.

Cadbury dairy milk will win over any type of fancy chocolate you can offer me!!

Same on deoderants. I now use Dove stick deoderant which is slightly more expensive, but can't tell much more difference, still sweat, still smell if I am running round!

Another vote for Touch Eclat. I'm a posh make up junkie and I found that product rubbish! Clinque's version is the one you want (although I accept that isn't really a budget version!) I was also dissapointed by the newest Dior mascara. I contantly go back to Maybeline!

The boy's branded pants don't really have anything over his Next ones.

I would have said I was a Cadbury's girl though and through, but I don't like the recent recipie change ? I had my first Hotal Choclat goodies at easter and I'm converted!

Dairy Milk is the best, but I do love Galaxy too. I'm not a big fan of posher chocs like Thornton's.

I love love love Tresemme shampoo and conditioner. I have lovely hair anyway, but I would never use anything else. It just makes my hair all straw-like when I do.

I don't wear much make up so don't really care about brands, I just pick foundation that matches my skin and colours that are pretty.

I use sure roll on deoderant. Seems to work lovely for me and the pink one smells so lovely. If I do get a bit sweaty it just smells like the pink (Ican't remember if it's flowers or fruit)

Tesco Finest do some truly scrummy food. Their potato salad is just nom nom nom. I also like a lot of ASDA chosen by you stuff. Some of it is much nicer than the brand names, except their potato waffles. Yuck. All floury and ick. Their Iron Brew is soooooo much nicer than actual Irn Bru.

There are some things you just don't mess with though. Ketchup, beans and spaghetti MUST be Heinz. I especially hate cheapo ketchup.

We get our toilet roll from Home Bargains. It's called Nicky Elite and is £3.99 for 18 rolls of 3 ply. It's really soft and OH says it's great for after a curry! Sorry for the over share! Ha ha.

I have 3 Britney Spears perfumes - not my choice, all presents - and they smell bootiful.

Exactly this! I bought the waterproof version for honeymoon and it ran in the pool. So disappointed!

    I'm not picky on brands & normally get what's on offer however the exceptions which I always have to get are;

Heinz beans and ketchup and lurpak or countrylife butter if not from the farm shop.

Im also with Cricks on Lancôme juicy tubes - far too sticky for me.

The OH brought a bottle of this home last year from work. MIL2B got all excited about how 'Bollinger was the best thing she's ever tasted' blah blah blah. Took one sip and chucked the rest down the sink!

Must haves for me are Heinz Ketchup and beans and real butter over marg.

Generally with you on the shampp thing save for Kerastase shampoo and conditioner. Really works for me and I can eek out a bottle for a long time. Amongst normal brands/high end brands they seem much of a muchness for me.

What bugs me, though, is buying the waterproof version of a mascara I really like to find it looks completely different to the normal version.

I like the Clinique one for under my eyes, but have to stick to good old Maybelline mousse concealer for the rest of my face as the Clinique doesn't cover too well.

I love Cadbury's and hate Hotel chocolate and any other 'posh' chocs really. I recently sent a Choccywoccydoodah cake back as it was so horrible.

Your boy's pants reminded me of what made me start this thread. It wasn't gadgety, it was OH's shirts. He paid around £60 for Fred Perry polo shirts, they were washed on the most gentle wash and have still shrunk. He has had more wear out of £3 fruit of the loom tops!

As long as I have John Frieda Straight Ahead shampoo and conditioner (wait until it's 3 for £10 as Asda) and nice loo roll I don't care about anything else being branded! Apart from my jeans - Levis seem to be the only brand that fit my apparently weird shaped behind!
