My ankle update (warning includes pictures)

Ice Queen, 21 May, 2009 at 09:51 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

Had my follow up appointment after my op last night, the plaster back slab and bandages were removed, I had 23 staples taken out and am now in a fibreglass cast for another 4 weeks - feeling a bit tender today, but at least I'm on the mend

Surgeon said he is pleased with how the wound is healing so that's good

And for those of you that like to see gross photo's

This is what it looked like when I first fell down the stairs

This is what it looked like when they took the cast off yesterday. Inside of ankle where he has done tendon transfer

Outside of ankle where they had to reset my heel

So glad you are doing ok, you certainly look like you are healing well. I bet the fiberglass feels much better. How are you doing pain wise?

Lol WT that's exactly what OH said

Mrs Magic - was a bit sore last night as they had to push my ankle up to 90 degrees and it hurt a lot. Managed to get it to about 75 so have to go and have cast changed again in 2 weeks so that they can push it a bit further. Still taking pain killers, so should be OK

All that from falling down the stairs? Blimey!

That's quite an impressive wound you've got there. Hope it's not causing you too much pain.

Why oh why did I open this when I know I am so weak stomached?! That looks incredibly painful, hope the healing process is quick and easy for you.

It was just one step - I overstepped and missed the bottom step. Crazy isn't it

I looked at the first picture and thought Oh that's not that bad and then I saw the other two.

It looks very neat but ouch!

    Hope the pain subsides soon.

I had an Op in Jan after breaking 3 bones falling down stairs and the scars are looking pretty good now and they were similar to yours. Its amazing how quickky they heal.

When are you going to start weight bearing ?

Thats bonkers IQ, its amazing how such a simple thing can cause so much damage. When I was 17 I swung my legs out of the car to get out, disldged my knee cartelidge broke it into several pieces and got it wedged in my kneecap. It took an op to remove it all and get me to stand up. Truly bonkers.

Ouch! Bet it'll look ever so much better in a few months time though.

All my friends' ankle breaks have been from really innocuous "stepping" accidents, there must be a vulnerable point or something.

Good luck with the new cast anyway.

    Nice staples ?

How's it all feeling now? Any toe clamping or spasms?
Don't be worried if that happens and they haven't warned you, apparently it's fairly normal and the nerves grow back but it scared be shitless the first time it happened to me.

I remember when I went form the plaster to the fibreglass cast after my op, they let me have a good scratch before putting the new one on and then warned me about using anything to scratch underneath.

did you get any photos of the surgery too?

Have had spasms, feels really weird

4 weeks non weight bearing, then I will have a brace on it for 2 months

I just showed your photos to J to show him how easy mine was in comparrison - only small opening needed as they were shortening and splicing in a small amount/area and no heel reset

he said to tell you to buy a bungalow

Ouch IQ, looks painful but like it's healing well.

My ex dislocated and broke his ankle (playing football) and ended up with scars similar to yours but one huge one on one side of his ankle and another smaller one and had to have pins, plates etc. I didn't enjoy watching them take the staples out ? The scars do disappear quite quickly

My Mum also managed to break her foot stepping off the smallest of steps, seems easy done
