My bridesmaid is pregnant - advice with dress needed!

25 January, 2011 at 13:19 Posted on Planning 0 12

I am over the moon for my best friend that told me yesterday she is pregnant. She is due about 5 weeks before our wedding so that tells me she will have a pretty huge bump when it comes to our big day.

We have not yet ordered our dresses but we have found them and are having them made.

This is what they were going to be (althogh in cadbury purple with a silver sash and a sweetheart neckline!)

http://www.weddingdressonlineshop.co.uk/bridesmaid-dresses/683-satin-strapless-with-elegant-sash-a-line-short-style-hot-sell-bridesmaid-dress-bm-0049.html

It will be in quite heavy satin.

Do you think this is appropriate for a heavily pregnant lady? My intial though was that maybe something long and maybe more of a flowing chiffon may look better and make her feel more comfortable but OH really doesnt want all of our 4 BM's to have long chiffon dresses as our best friends had pretty much those exact dresses in the same colour a few months ago and she is one of our BM's!

I obv need to have a chat with her and see what she is comfotable with which I will do but wanted your thoughts too

My bridesmaid came round a couple of weeks ago to tell me she is due 2 weeks after our wedding - it was unexpected.

She is very bad diabetic (has to get scans & bloods done every 2 wks throughout pregnancy, she is having trouble keeping her bloods down etc) so she decided she was best to step down - its a long day for anyone, never mind being pregnant & having 'complications' with the pregnancy.

However I was in the position where my dresses where already ordered but I fortunately had a friend of similar size who jumped at the opportunity!

Its had to predict how she will feel come the time of the wedding - I have never been pregnant - and at least you are in the position where you havnt yet ordered the dress. Can you talk to the dressmaker / company see what she suggests? Would it be possible to make her dress lighter ie less lining or sthing so they still looked the same but she is comfortable?

    Hello!

You may recall my bridesmaid was due 2 weeks before our wedding. We ended up working on the principal she'd have had it by then so went with a style suitable for post birth (she'd have either had it and could potentially be there or not had it and not be there)...

I think really you want an empire style which drops from under the bust (IYGWIM?). Chiffon would be ideal as it hangs better. I think it would also compliment the style of the other dresses too. Who's making them for you? They should be able to do something to fit. Also, she's gonna need straps as she'll have an industrial strength bra on and won't be able to do strapless bras. We got extra material for my bridesmaid and made straps for her.

Short should sill be fine but she may need to wear flats - though in summer you can get lovely sparkly sandals.

Chiffon is gonna hang much nicer than satin and will be more accommodating.

I think if you can get it looking very simillar to the others then it should be fine. I don't think the sash will work. And it's going to be the same colour so even if not identical then everyone is going to know she's a bridesmaid.

If you think you'd prefer them all matching have you thought about looking for a style that will suit all? You can also get maternity dresses...

Forgot - ours weren't chiffon, they were "nu-georette" (chiffon to me and you).

Something like this might work? And would suit all? https://dessy.com/bridesmaid-dresses/

Straps! A very good point there!

If I was the pregnant bridesmaid, I'd think I'd step down to be honest. Especially given how close the EDD is to the wedding. Is that just me???? (Sorry, not helpful!)

Can you look at the maternity range for her?? They do have some short ones, just depends what she fancies.

Not being funny, go on JoJoMamaBebe or Blooming Marvellous websites when they have got their new season stock in. These shops both have fab maternity clothes & they both do some lovely dresses which would possibly be suitable for your friend. Yes she would probably end up wearing a different dress to the rest of your BM's but I know when I was in the last few weeks of pregnancy I didn't feel comfortable in anything that wasn't specifically a maternity dress due to the shape of my bump. You could then accessorise to make your pregnant BM match the others.

My CBM was only 4 months pregnant at our wedding, but huge (most people thought she was about 8 months gone). She wore this dress in the maternity version http://www.alfredangelounitedkingdom.com/Collections/ProductDisplay.aspx?productID=08c98e2a-4340-45ad-a9f9-72589d86968e&categoryID=3802fa9c-39d0-4b7f-b1c6-9bd0411741f2&pg=1&colorId1= Or if you can't open it, it's Alfred Angelo 7016

I'd attach a pic but don't know how to block out her face! It looked lovely and she said it was really comfy until right at the end of the day (when bumps tend to expand) and felt a bit tight.

Satin wouldn't be very forgiving for a pregnant body - it would show every lump and bump and your BM wouldn't thank you for it at all. The dress you've attached a link too is really pretty but not really suitable for the pregnant form - the sash is in completely the wrong place (and would only end up getting squished in the crease between boobs and top of the bump).

We searched loads of maternity sites for a bridesmaid style or evening dress, but just couldn't find anything suitable. At least using one of the bridesmaid dress designers all your bridesmaids can wear the same if you find one that also has a maternity version. Your BM will be feeling self consious enough as it is I'm sure without having to wear a different frock to everyone else! I presume you've already spoken to her to find out whether she'd like to wear long or short etc, bolero or bare arms etc. Her comfort should be a priority.

    Good luck in your search!
