My Father in Law

Specialkat, 27 July, 2009 at 22:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Tomorrow my father in law is losing his leg following major problems with his arteries. He collapsed with constant cramp and now less than a week later he is losing it. His life is going to alter forever and I don't know what to expect.

No point in this really other than to share any positive stories you may wish to share.

Oh no what a shock for your FIL and all his family.

My MIL has come close to losing her leg in recent months (ongoing celulitis and blood clots) but so far the doctors are happy that her life in general is not at risk.

So no practical help. Just wanted to express my sympathy for you all. I hope your FIL recovers in the best way possible and continues to have a full life ?

I used to have a boyfriend who'd had his right leg amputated 4" below the knee.

The first week I knew him I had no idea.

If he hadn't had it amputated, he wouldn't have been able to walk.

Hope everything goes well with the surgery.

Both my grandad and my uncle are amputees, grandad above the knee, uncle below. The prothestic (sp?) limbs now are absolutely fab, moved on so much from the days of "having a wooden leg".

No denying that its going to be hard and an adjustment, but they really can do so much.

Hope the op goes well and your FIL is up and about soon!

Oh K, I'm really sorry. Is that what your recent FB statuses have been about?

Does he live on his own or is he going to have someone around to help him? Is he fairly local?

I had a friend who lost his leg in a horrific motor cross accident (he lost so much of it that he used to boast that he was the only bloke who could say his manhood was longer than his leg!). After a few months you'd have never known. He was easily coping with the every day stuff and even rambling up mountains.

There's lots of help available nowadays.

Sorry to hear this SKat. I know it tends to run in my family - my grandad and various great uncles lost legs. I never met my grandad though but I know he was able to ride a bike.

I did know one family member who'd lost a leg. You'd never have known, he drove, took the grandchildren out, worked fulltime. It must take a lot of getting used to but I think in time you get used to it. Hopefully he should be mobile relatively quickly.

This must be quite a blow to him and the family, I hope you're all as ok as can be despite it all. As the others have said, there is so much help now for this and the prosthetic limbs are so much better than they used to be. I had a relative (who I never had the pleasure to meet as he passed away before I was born) who had a huge cumbersome wooden leg which I saw as the family kept it for a while (my family can be a bit bizarre) and it is amazing how different they are nowadays to what people used to have to put up with.?
