My first bridal shop experience...

Asmurfette, 16 April, 2015 at 19:17 Posted on Planning 0 65

So, today, i went into a bridal shop for the first time in my life ... im 41, my first marriage was in 1995, and my mum made my dress so this was a totally new experience and i was very very nervous...

I never wear dresses, and, as some of you already know, my dress ideas have been an ongoing thing... i decided against using the designer i had my hopes set on as this wouldn't involve any fittings etc... i decided my best bet would be to try on some style, see what suits and go from there.. so fast forward to day..

It's 11am, and im outside a bridal shop with my mate, who is even less girly than me ... no idea what to expect, and quite frankly, i was bricking it!!

So, in we go .. the lady was lovely, asked about style, budget and when the wedding was ... i told her, style - no idea, budget - low, not much more than £600, date of wedding - tbc, but hopefully sept.. she told me, best way was to to try buy off the peg as to order a gown could take months and it may not arrive, and it will save money.. cool..

She directs me to a rack of dresses, in budget (ish) and tells me to have a look, she showed me a vintage number, that can only be described as a nighty, no thanks.. then another, empire line(?) with my belly, no i need some structure.. she laughs.. is there nothing you like the look of here... nope not really...

I am now thinking i will never find a dress if this is how its gonna be... but lady comes to the rescue "we have loads more upstairs"

Upstairs...

I walk straight over to a dress.. ohh this is nice, how much is this?

She agrees its beautiful, but doesnt answer the money question - typical, out of budget.. she points out a couple more, no no no, me and my mate are looking at the dresses and each other in total bewilderment..

So i ask again about the earlier dress, she asks do i wanna try it on, its the right size .. ok, why not? .. she takes it down to the changing room and tells me to see if there is any more i like the look of, i see a sorta fit n flare/mermaidy style, with tiny pink flowers and tons of tulle, pink aint my colour, but i was drawn to it ... so she takes that too... before she goes she points out on more.. really hard to describe, fabric looked creased (was meant to look this way), kinda silvery/ivory/ shade, a very unique colour, with silver tulle showing through a split in the dress... gorgeous delicate halter neck straps made up of daisy/floral shapes ... yeah go on.. we'll try that too .......... and no point did i look at any price tags (my bad!)

Changing room..

Silvery number first,... and to my surprise i really liked it...

Pink tiny flowers with tulle number ....... ohhh now i like that as well

She asks which do you like best? ... couldn't choose ... really liked them both, even with the pink....

So, we try on the next dress .... omg this is the one....... absolutely love it .......

Have no intention of buying it today, none whatsoever ......... ok, how much is this? .. she looks at the tag.......... only £350!!!!!!!!!! ... OMG!! .. this is gonna go if i walk away at that price .. so i am now £75 lighter, my mum is £100 lighter (loan till pay day lol) and i am halfway to being the proud owner of this amazing dress...

Do you guys wanna see it??

Wow!! You look amazing! And that dress is absolutely gorgeous! I love the flowers on the shoulder, the beautiful detail on the bodice and the shape on you. Can't believe you did it!

Thanks Mrs S, i was very scared flashing it, as i'd seen so many beautiful brides on here ...

The flowers did it for me, it covers my belly - bonus .. love the back ... she just plopped the veil on, but on second thoughts i don't think i'll have one, i think it detracts from the back detail, what do you think?

I couldn't walk away for that price ..

Totally not what i thought i'd get, so you were right about trying them on, thanks so much for that advice chick Smiley smile

I think you're right about the veil, doesn't need it and hides the flowers a bit. You could look at a birdcage veil, or a pretty comb etc to put in your hair. So pleased you were brave and went for it! Its funny isnt it, wedding dress shopping makes you realise you didn't know yourself as well as you thought you did!

Thanks so much ladies Smiley smile

Can i ask your advice on a couple of things?

    1) The lady put a hoop underskirt under this, i really don't like them... do you guys think a petticoat with layers of tulle would work the same?

    2) Would 50's style bridemaid dresses still work with this? .. and what would colour/s would be best?

    3) What kinda colours could OH get away with for his suit n cravat?

    4) Do you think i could get away with some red on the guys/bridesmaid? and the flowers?

I was thinking birdcage veil too, but would that work with me wearing my glasses?

I found a little idea for hair inspiration if not, its on my phone so can't flash it at mo, but basically some little flowers/petals here n there? .. (it will be worn up)

Found some gorgeous converse tho, what you think of these?

It's gorgeous! Wow! Loving the flower detail on the shoulder! I agree with the others and you tho, I think the long veil does detract from the back detail so maybe wouldn't go for that (and I LOVE veils :-D ) beautiful and super cool that you found your dress :-D

    Yeah, i'm ditching the veil ... £150 i really don't need to spend! ..

Just located a better pic of the back.. i can only find a handful of pics online of the dress, and none at all with the black flowers..

Oh, the back is so pretty! That seals it, definitely don't cover that up.

50s dresses will totally work and I reckon splashes of red in the flowers and the ties would look great with it. Those shoes are seriously shiny, they cost more than mine did!!

That dress is amazing, and looks like it suits you perfectly! As for colour, i think any colour at all will go, really...but red especially with 50's dresses will look great.
Also, if i look that good as you do at 41 i've done something very right!

Your dress is stunning, loving the back detail. Never seen anything like that before.

glad you ditched the veil as yes it would have hidden the flowers on the back.

Loving the converse trainers too xxx

Do you know why your mum isn't into the red? It's a pretty classic wedding colour scheme! One of my bridesmaids tried the dress we chose on in red and my mum was trying to convince me to go for that!

You look fantastic, and what a bargain! Agree about the veil, the detail on your dress is gorgeous. Also agree on you not looking 41! Wow!

O/T but we were thinking of putting temporary tattoos on the tables at night for a bit of a laugh, and I found some beautiful ones of poppies! I'm working on a floral sleeve so thought they were fitting!

Wow your dress is gorgeous! I agree that a veil would hide the lovely detail on the back though.
Really pleased for you Smiley smile
And I think the bridesmaids dresses are really pretty

Aww how nice are you all being? Thanks ladies.
My age haha i did avoid flashing a close up of my face Smiley winking
My bridesmaid well one has been informed she wears what I tell her - I've done the same for her & hated every moment. The other bridesmaid kinda made themselves bridesmaids so again they wear what I say. I do however wanna find an actual shop that stocks them so I can see them on. First bridesmaid is tiny but had huge boobs so wanna check it works for her.
They will also be wearing converse lol

Mrs Shep I don't really know why mum hates the idea of red. She says it's a "floosy" colour. She's a rare gem lol

I am in love with your dress and am ever so jealous ... as it is exactly what I had in mind for myself and never found :'(

It looks amazing on you. I think 50's style bridesmaids dresses would go lovely with this ... It's not really a 'weddingy' colour but I think a silver or a grey for dress colour would go perfectly with this.
