my first 'dress me' post

cha-cha, 12 July, 2009 at 13:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

OK, a wedding has sneaked up on me. Next Friday H & I are going to a rather fancy evening do at the poshest hotel in town. H is fine, planning to pick the cat hair off his kilt and away he goes, but I'm b*ggered ? I can't believe I forgot about it. Help!

My selection of 'posh' frocks, which did me very well in last year's wedding whirl, are now a bit, erm snug. Stupid comfort eating when being made redundant. If only I was one of those wonderful people who 'forget to eat' when stressed/ upset/ busy...

Anyway, I really need to get a new dress, but the following conditions apply:

1) I have legs like a shetland pony. Seriously.

2) I'm a size 16, and very much hourglass shaped (as in most 16s I buy fit at the bust and hips, but 'bag' a little round the waist)

3) As I'm still waiting on my redundancy money, I can't take the piss with buying a new dress, so it needs to be as cheap as possible, preferably free!

Can any miracle workers help? I'm going to trawl the charity vintage stores tomorrow and see if I can pick up an old Chanel dress for 50p, but all and any help is appreciated! V grateful thank you in advance ?

I'd say just get a cheap plain dress from anywhere and accessorise to the max! i did this for my cosuins wedding last year and it worked a treat. think my dress was £12 in new look or somewhere like that.

In your shoes, I would cut out carbs in the run up and have a universal contour wrap (around £35 but much cheaper than a glam new dress!) the morning/afternoon on the day-then I would wear a favourite frock from last year, that hopefully no-one aside from your H would have seen before.

If that's not an option, check out TK Maxx or the vintage stores as you planned.

    Good luck!

Monsoon sale starts on Tuesday I think so that might snare you a bargain

Debenhams have some fairly nice cheap dresses or you might find a skirt and top more useful

    Hi Ladies!

Thank you all so much for your replies. Kitty that is a gorgeous dress- and the hot pink handbag & wrap also especially eye-catching. If they can deliver before Friday, we may have a winner! DDW I do have a spa voucher for the hotel so if they have an opening on Friday I may book in for a bandage wrap too. I've never had one before, and as much as I would love to think I'd mysteriously morph into Kate Moss if it smoothed out some of the, ahem, chunky hippy bits I'd be more than pleased (and I have heard they leave your skin increadibly smooth, so bonus either way). I've been dribbling over a few Monsoon frocks but wasn't sure when the sale started. Honestly, I can't believe I've been so ditzy as to forget about this wedding *slaps head*

Once again, many many grateful thanks ? I appreciate all the ideas! At least now i have some (realistic) options ?
