Oh goodness, that's a huge undertaking! I wouldn't be a fan either, I have to say. ? Had he had to buy a really big tank or whatever snakes live in?

Our family used to have 3 corn snakes - Basil, Matilda and Lola. I loved them. Did he get a hatchling or an adult? To be honest, once you've bought the initial set-up for them, they're pretty low maintenance pets. Ours were so friendly, they loved to be handled and never bit.

Mrs magic its not too expensive realy, smallish tank to start with and it will go in a bigger one eventually but not too big.

jersey girl its 6 weeks old, we wanted a hatchling but we left it too long, its albino and really inquisitive, its spent ages exploring the tank. i actually think given time i may start to like it. the only really yukky bit is the dead frozen mice in my freezer ?

You'll get used to the mice. At least corns don't have the live ones. It actually becomes fascinating to watch them eat. And shed. Does it have a name?

In england its ilegal to feed live bait to any snakes apparently, strange the odd info you pick up lol. i think hes a very good pet for the kids to have as hes interesting! although i found it bit yuck that hed just eaten when i picked hime up and you could see where he'd swallowed.

Good name. I think snakes are good pets for kids too, as long as there is plenty of supervision, obviously. Good luck with Sydney!

Not a fan either. Once you've had spitting cobras in your garden, it's easy to get over the idea of keeping snakes as pets......

Having said that, don't tell my daughter that snakes come in pink!

Oh yuck. Did you know he was getting it? If my H brought a snake home, both he and it would be living in the shed as there's no way I'd let it in the house! Not my idea of a pet I'm afraid. Along with rats and tarantulas. Blugh.

I would live in fear of finding the tank empty... for some reason, I always then start to imagine the snake hiding in the toilet, ready to bite me on my bum!

I just googled pink corn snake... you're a braver woman than I!

I'm too scared to google. How big do they grow? Presumably they are not posionus? Please say you don't live near me, I would panic a lot if I knew there was a snake close by. A wuss? Me? Yup ?

I'd like to see some pics when you have some.

I'd also like to share two bits of advice. One, corns are notrorious escape artists. They can get through the smallest gap anjd it's a good idea to weigh down the tank lid as although mine wasn't a corn, he could push the lid up a bit. Two, do not defrost the pinkies in the microwave when you're in a rush, I had to clean mouse guts off the inside?

I used to have a corn snake, he was called Fred and was red. I agree with Sare though, I used to weigh the lid down with several books, especially when he got older. He escaped loads of times! I used to defrost the pinkies in warm water, it was fascinating watching him eat but as he got older I used to have to distract him on one side of the tank while I threw the mice in on the opposite side, he had a nasty habit of striking as I was trying to get it in there! It was great watching him shed his skin too.

    Aw, pretty!

I really like snakes, I'm in awe of how something without any limbs can live independently and move so fast.

I wonder if I could convince Mr G we need one! Although I'm not sure if my Dad would ever visit again ? It was bad enough when we had rats!

    He looks lovely!

    No, no, no, no..

As snakes go, a pink one sounds quite nice but there is no way I could have one in the house, huge phobia happening here and even getting goosies thinking about finding the tank empty one morning...

I used to work with a girl that had a bird phobia, we used to roll up at the houses and ask if there were any cats (both alergic), birds or snakes present before going in... if there were, we would stand in the hall.

    Hope sydney settles in well

Very cute Slimzoe, I like his pattern. He's a little bootlace at the moment and it's a bit like babies, you forget how small they were. Save his first skin and you'll look back in a few years and be amazed how slim he was.

I used to defrost pinkies in a dish of warm water (not too hot or they'll cook!) for about 45 minutes before feeding. Was ok for pinkies, but you have to get a bigger dish when you have decent sized rats complete with tails, teeth and fur. Which are great for when the inlaws pop round and nosy in your kitchen?

Cute is not the word I would use to describe it but luckily H is as likely to suggest having a snake as a pet as I am.

Not an expert by any means, just someone with a geeky, slightly obsessive keen interest in snakes.
