My long wedding report with flashes

Aurora Borealis, 4 August, 2013 at 09:55 Posted on Planning 0 19

Well before I start my report, I will briefly tell you how my husband and I met. Three years ago, my friend Rachel and I went on holiday to Spain. On our first day, we decided to eat at a restaurant called the Penny Farthing. We chose it because it had a really good vegetarian selection (and I am a vegetarian). We were served by a rather charming waiter called Christian. As it turned out, he was usually the chef but on that day a waitress had called in sick and there was nobody else to cover.

We got chatting, and he asked us if we’d like to go for a drink after he finished work. We agreed, and ended up spending the rest of the week together (my friend met some other men, we didn’t just abandon her).

When Rachel and I went home at the end of the week, I felt really strange. I felt like everything was different now, but it was still the same. Christian said he waved us off and then walked down the same street he walked down every day, but had no idea what he was doing there.

When I got home we talked online every night. I ignored all the people who said it was a holiday romance, and it wouldn’t last. Christian decided to move back to England (he is originally from South Shields). We decided he would stay with me for a week or two and then find somewhere else to live. Well two weeks passed, and I admitted that I didn’t really want him to go. He admitted that he didn’t really want to go either. So he stayed.

A few months later, he got down on one knee. And now we are married!

So here is my wedding report! I will start with the lead up to the wedding…

Monday

My colleagues took me out after work to celebrate the wedding. They had kept everything a surprise, and they paid for everything, which was really lovely. We went bowling (I came second) and then for a meal. They presented me with a really sweet poem they had written me, which was really touching.

Tuesday

It was my last day at work before the wedding. Since we had been out to celebrate the night before, I wasn’t really in the mood to work any more. Especially since my desk was covered in confetti, with a ‘Good Luck’ balloon perched on top, and I was instructed to wear a ‘Bride to Be’ sash. My manager sternly called me into our team’s main office where all the colleagues on our floor gathered round me, and I was presented with gifts.

My manager read out a poem which she had written for me, which was both funny and lovely. I was given a card that everyone had signed, a Mr and Mrs mug set, a little ornament of a loving couple, a bottle of wine and a gift voucher. I was really overwhelmed by how nice and generous everyone had been, and I went home feeling really excited.

Wednesday

Now that I had finished work, things were getting really real. We had been planning the wedding for two years, so it was hard to believe that it was finally happening. It took four trips to the car to put all our decorations in to take to the venue. We handed everything over to the coordinator at the venue (who said he wished all his brides were as organised as me). Then we went to the travel agents to pick up our honeymoon tickets.

Then we had nothing left to do. I had organised everything so that we had nothing left to do but relax. Because, to me, the way we met was like a fairytale, this was kind of the theme of our wedding.

Thursday

This was Christian’s birthday. He had to go and pick up his best man from the airport, and then we went to the pub. My MOH called me to ask if there would be napkins at the venue or not. I assured her there would! The weather was wet and miserable.

Friday

Christian went back to the airport to pick up his Mum. I went to pick up one of my BMs from the train station, and then we met with my other BM and MOH and we got our nails done. Then we went to the venue to drop off the BM dresses, shoes and a couple of other bits and to say hello to my parents who had arrived to stay at the venue. The weather was wet and miserable.

Then we went to the pub for dinner and drinks. It was really nice as my parents had not met Christian’s Mum before and we had quite a few other friends there who had travelled to us for the wedding.

Then I went back to our flat with one of my BMs and we watched ‘Bridesmaids’ and drank cava. Then we decided we should be sensible and go to bed because it was midnight.

    Saturday

I woke up at 4am. I tried to go back to sleep, then I tried reading, then I tried to sleep, then I tried reading, then I gave up. I was worried about getting too tired later as I am notorious for falling asleep early in the evening, but I really couldn’t sleep. I had a shower, got dressed and decided to see if 8am was too early to wake my BM. She allowed me to disturb her at this time as it was my wedding day (I’m not normally allowed to disturb her before 10am when she stays round).

We had pop tarts and croissants for breakfast. My Dad was coming to pick us up at 9.30am but at 9.00am we were ready to go so we decided to go and sit outside. The weather was beautiful and sunny.

My Dad picked us up and took us to the venue. The coordinator took us up to the ‘getting ready room’ and my BM and I started getting all our stuff out. But my hairdresser wasn’t due until 10am and I was planning to do my makeup after that. So we put some music on and drank some Bucks Fizz.

Then my other BM and MOH arrived, then so did the photographer, the videographer and the hairdresser. Suddenly the room was full of people and we were listening to ‘Rocking Around the Christmas Tree’ (the playlist was set to random).

I had my hair done, then I did my make up. I decided it was time to put my dress on so I took my top and jeans off, at which point my Mum and bridesmaids started pointing at my bum and shrieking in amusement at my ‘Mrs McRae’ knickers. Eventually, after they had taken photos, they decided to help me get dressed. Two bridesmaids and my Mum did the dress up while my MOH stood there fanning me, as I was feeling quite hot. Then they put my veil on and I was ready to go.

It was about quarter past one at this point, and the wedding was due to start at two. I had no intentions of being late, as I am never late for things and I’d been waiting to get married for two years! It was all feeling very real now but I still didn’t feel nervous – I was expecting this to start any time. I did ask someone to find out if Chris had arrived, as he was due to get there about one and I think I was mildly concerned until I had received confirmation. But once I knew he was definitely there to marry me, there just didn’t seem to be anything to worry about.

My MOH went downstairs as her husband had arrived with her son, my page boy. So I sat there with my other two bridesmaids (one of them put my shoes on for me, I felt like Cinderella sitting on a throne) waiting for the photographer to let us know he was ready to take a few pre-ceremony shots. Then my MOH came back with her son, who looked absolutely adorable. He suddenly became very shy and hid behind his Mum, I think I looked a bit too unusual for his liking!

We sat around for a bit longer, impatiently waiting – I wanted to get married now! Then I realised that we didn’t have the page boy’s buttonhole. I asked my Mum if she knew where it was so she went to have a look with the men’s buttonholes. She promptly delivered it and my MOH and I looked at it in confusion. It had a magnet on it, but there was just one little round magnet, and not a second one for it to stick to. We looked at it for a while trying to work it out until one of my other bridesmaids walked over and said ‘look, you take this magnet off, and there’s a magnet in the stalk’. It was very simple and we felt quite silly, but at least we could get the buttonhole on. Then the photographer was ready for us.

I nearly forgot my flowers but my Mum reminded me to take them. We went to the top of the staircase to have some photos taken by the beautiful stain glassed window. Then it turned out the registrar couldn’t find me, as she was waiting in the room we’d just left. So I shuffled back to do the pre-ceremony legalities. And then it was nearly quarter past two! I was a little dismayed to discover I was running late but I was assured it was fine.

So we made it down the stairs (something I had been a little worried about!) to find the staff all eagerly assembled down there smiling at me. And a lovely surprise, a couple of the girls from work (who are really lovely but I didn’t invite as I’ve not worked there that long) had turned up just to catch a glimpse of me in my dress. I told them they were welcome to stay but they said they wouldn’t.

My MOH and pageboy were lined up to go in first, followed by my other two bridesmaids and then my Dad and I. I was still waiting to feel nervous but all I felt was excitement. I was getting married!

At this point my Dad began ‘sweating from the eyes’ as one of my bridesmaids put it. I had never seen him cry before so it was a bit surreal. I am notorious for crying at everything, so I was expecting to be a bit of a wreck by the time the ceremony was over, but I had no urge to cry yet.

Our lovely coordinator Greg told my MOH and pageboy it was time to go in… then the two bridesmaids… it was me next! I was told not to walk too fast, which I couldn’t really because of my dress anyway. So we walked in, and the first thing I saw was one of the ushers standing at the back, and someone next to him I didn’t recognise – my brother! It turns out he scrubs up OK in a suit!

I was trying to look at all the guests as we approached the corner, then we turned the corner and I could see Chris! He smiled when he saw me, then he saw my Dad wiping a tear from his eye and he immediately turned round to his Mum and demanded a tissue from her. This caused his Mum to start crying, then his sister, and my Mum and one of my bridesmaids. When we saw the video highlights later on, even the assistant registrar was wiping a tear from her eye. And I… was still cool as a cucumber. I was just trying to take everyone in. I did notice a beautiful pink hat one of my friends was wearing, I didn’t even notice the music playing, and then I was at the front.

I smiled at Chris and wiped another tear away from his eye. The registrar began speaking and I remember thinking that I must make an effort to project my voice nicely, as I’m usually very quiet and I wanted everyone to hear me. So we said our vows and everything went well. My pageboy did chatter a little bit throughout the ceremony but it was quite cute so wasn’t a problem. I never got nervous, and I didn’t cry. I just couldn’t stop smiling. And then I was married – we were married!

After signing the register, we happily walked back down the aisle. All the time spent choosing music was wasted on me as anything could have been playing and I wouldn’t have noticed. We were presented with a drink of Kir Royale, and stepped outside for photos. Then our drinks were taken away so we could have our photos taken! I was a bit disappointed about that, but I did manage to get it back eventually.

We had some lovely photos taken, including one where the best man and the ushers picked Chris up… and I saw the price label still on the bottom of his shoe!

Then we finally had the chance to speak to our guests, so I did my best to start making my way round people. But before I knew it we were being called in to dinner. Everyone took their seats while Chris and I lurked outside the room, waiting to be told we could go in. Apparently Chris’s Mum and sister were missing, so we had to wait a little while until they reappeared. Then we were announced into the room and everyone clapped.

We had a really beautiful meal, which I ate hardly any of. I don’t know if it was the fact that I was hot, or excited, or the fact that my dress left little room for stomach expansion, but I hardly ate all day. In between courses I thought it would be a good opportunity to go round the tables and say hello to people… but I was really enjoying sitting down! Halfway through the meal my Dad said to me ‘was I supposed to put some music on for this part?’ I had completely forgotten about this and everyone was talking anyway so it obviously didn’t matter!

My MOH brought my page boy over as he had decided he wasn’t feeling so shy any more and would like to give me a hug. He then decided he would like to sit on my lap for the speeches. Our favours were chocolate coins in little carriage-shaped boxes. Brandon (pageboy) wanted to eat mine. My Dad started with his speech, which made everyone laugh. Brandon then tried to eat the foil from the chocolate coins, so I took it off him, much to his dismay. Then he started banging cutlery on the table, so I took this off him as well. I tried to hold his hands to keep them still but he shouted ‘no, no Auntie Vikki!’ So I couldn’t fully attend to my Dad’s speech because of this, but since that was the only real hiccup of the day I can’t complain.

My Mum then read a poem she’d written, which caused more tears (still none from me though, although it was a lovely poem). At this point Brandon threw a foil wrapper on the floor and insisted on retrieving it, so spent the rest of the speeches under the table where he was much less of a distraction!

The best man’s speech included no embarrassing stories or horrific revelations and the groom’s speech was also without incident. So then I decided to start going round tables and talking to people. I started at one table where I was persuaded to sit down, as someone had gone outside. Before I knew it we were being ushered outside so they could turn the room round for the evening. It was such a lovely day so it was nice to be outside, and I finally managed to work my way round most of the guests at this point.

Then it was time to cut the cake. I stood next to the cake while everyone stood some way away looking at me. My husband was nowhere to be seen! Eventually he arrived and we cut the cake. I was asked when we would like to do the first dance so I said ‘we might as well do it now, shall we?’ I was so relaxed about everything all day, which really surprised me as I normally like to be so organised.

We had had a few dancing lessons in the run up to the wedding but the routine she taught us was getting very complicated and I didn’t want to be worrying about it on the day (though I don’t think I would have anyway, I really felt like I didn’t have a care in the world). So we had practiced a simplified version but hadn’t got in as much practice as we would have liked. But it went fine, even though Chris did step on my dress a couple of times, and we did a couple of things in the wrong order. Everyone seemed to enjoy it anyway.

I did some dancing and Chris did some more socialising outside. Then it was time for the photographer and videographers to leave. But they reminded me that I hadn’t tossed my bouquet, which I was planning to do. Ah yes, I’d completely forgotten! So we gathered outside for this, and I warned the ladies that I’m not very good at throwing, so they all moved a bit closer. I threw it… and it went straight over them all. So my bouquet was returned to me and everyone moved a bit further away so we could try again. Despite some good attempts, nobody actually caught it in the end, even though it did land within the crowd this time.

Before I knew it, it was time for the last song of the night. I didn’t want it to end, even though I’d been awake since 4am and it was now 12.30 which is late for me at the best of times! But it had been an absolutely perfect day, everything I could have wished for and more.

I would thoroughly recommend all my suppliers, they all did a fantastic job.
