Despite not posting much I am a serial lurker and thought I would write a quick report of ‘my day’. I thought it would be difficult to write but in fact it keeps pouring out and in fact may well spill into several posts ….. So are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin.

A quick background

Me and Rob met in 1999 after a few too many drinks at a bar in Nottingham, to ensure we met again we exchanged numbers and jewellery, I awoke with a cheap metal ring and an even cheaper wooden bead necklace. He awoke with my rather expensive Tag Heuer watch and a white gold necklace. Why he didn’t run off into the sunset I will never know, but he called and we exchanged jewellery back, and from pretty much that moment I knew he was special.

The proposal

So fast forward nearly 12 years, we now live together in a house be bought together 10 Years earlier, and have a small zoo of animals together. We have been through some rocky patches but the good times have always outweighed the bad. We had spoken about getting engaged but just never got round to it.

Its Christmas day 2010 there is snow still on the ground following the coldest spell of winter I can remember. I was up early to go and do the horses and am wearing about 6 layers of clothing and probably looking as unattractive as I can. Rob insisted before we do anything we take the dog for a walk, I oblige not really understanding the urgency or why he is so twitchy but don’t question it. We walk up though the woods I think he has tripped and giggle as he is on one knee on the floor, I suddenly realise he is pulling a box from his pocket. He asks me to marry him, takes off several pairs of gloves I am wearing and puts the gorgeous ring he has chosen on my finger. Obviously as I am now writing a wedding report I say ‘Yes’ and probably like most brides to be I manage to produce about 6 wedding magazines in the space of a week and start desperately planning a huge lavish affair at a castle somewhere, involving riding my horse down the aisle, having the dog as a bridesmaid and the chinchilla as a ring bearer.

The start of the planning

We have a week or so off after Christmas and discuss dates and decide rather than setting a date then finding a venue, we will find a venue and then decide a date. We sit and talk about ‘ Our wedding ‘ and what we both want, and realise that in fact a large lavish affair isn’t what either of us want. Unlike a lot of brides to be the thought of being centre of attention and everyone looking at me fills me with terror, and we toy with the idea of going abroad with just closest family and friends.
Back at work new year 2011 and i show off my ring to anyone that even glances at it for a second, and realise how many friends we have that I would hate not to be able to celebrate our wedding day with, so heading abroad goes out the window, and we spend a couple of weekends driving looking at local venues just from the outside and find ‘the one.’I ring and arrange to go and have a meeting and we love the place, but are like a pair of plonkers when asked questions as we still haven’t got an idea of a date or how many people, or really anything other than the fact we want to get married. We come away with lots of decisions to make and an idea of prices. We have a vague idea we will get married spring/summer 2012 but looking at the venue price list quickly realise it is loads cheaper to get married ‘ out of season ‘ in fact the venue hire charge in November, December, January and Feb is less than half the price of the summer months. Quick discussion hubby to be doesn’t want it this side of Christmas, January is too soon after Christmas, so that left February. A quick call to the venue and they confirm they have one Saturday available and that is the 25th, a quick discussion with both sets of parents and date set, deposit paid on the only venue we actually had a meeting at and looked inside, we are getting married Saturday 25th Feb 2012, just over a year away.

Planning, planning and more planning

Having booked the venue, we started to make a few decisions, We didn’t want loads of people at the ceremony but we wanted to celebrate with everyone….. So the decision was a small intimate ceremony and wedding breakfast with the 2 of us and 19 of our closest family and friends. Then a larger evening do at the same venue with a real party atmosphere in the evening inviting another 100 or so friends, family and work colleagues.
So that was the venue and the guest list ticked off our ever extending list of to do.

Next was the dress, now as you don’t know me I probably best explain a few things, I am not a girly girl, I have horses and spend most of my life in jodphurs, fleeces and yard boots, and the thought of having to strip to my underwear in front of a stranger bought me out in a cold sweat, so I was absolutely dreading dress shopping. It was around the start of August after lots of pressure I headed dress shopping with my Mum we went to one shop and I faffed a bit, looked at some dresses and eventually gave in and tried on a few that were the best of a bad bunch, one of which looked ‘nice’. Now I knew I wasn’t a burst into tears this is the one sort of girl so was almost happy to go with ‘nice’. As an only daughter my Mum on the other hand would not let me. So sitting outside one shop I rang my Dad told him to get on the internet and find me numbers for dress shops near the one we were at. A few phone calls later and a quick trip home to pick the dog up and we headed to another shop. The shop specialised in uncollected orders and preloved dresses so what you tried on was what you bought. Tried a few on, again lots of ‘nice’ then from the second one particular dress went over my head I just knew it was the illusive one, no tears but lots of smiles and I am soooo pleased I didn’t stick with ‘nice’. The dress fitted almost perfectly, a quick haggle later and I had my perfect dress, and arranged a fitting for the end of January, with instructions I could afford to lose some weight but not to put any on.

So amidst sorting a dress, we chose a colour theme, I fancied Cadburys purple or cerise pink, Rob was having none of it and in the end we compromised and went with a bright turuoise, perfect for brightening up a dull and grey day in February. We also paid a deposit to the florist, booked a free pre wedding shoot with a potential photographer, and found a lovely local lady that made cupcakes who agreed to do us wedding cupcakes.
We also made some big decisions OH chose his best man and I decided I didn’t want big bridesmaids instead I wanted OH’s little nieces as flower girls. A quick trip with the kids to Debenhams and we realised buying flower girl dresses off the peg with out adjustments being needed wasn’t going to happen. My MIL to be jumped in and offered to make dresses for her gorgeous grand children, I snapped her hand off decided a style, decided I wanted them In turquoise and promptly left her to it.

Unfortunately in the end this is the nearest she came to featuring in the wedding.

Wedding flashes at the end i promise. Sorry for the dis jointed writing i am fitting my post around a variety of things and grabbing time to write a bit when i can. My husband, still cant get used to that, is out tonight so after my dinner i promise to knuckle down and get to it.

    The day before the wedding

Having the horses to do i got up as normal at silly o clock and went and played ponies, Rob stayed in bed till i rang and announced i was on my way home. We still had a fair few jobs to do and the house to tidy so it was all systems go.

Normally i cut Robs hair for him, having clipped horses on a regular basis gave me a good starting point and over the years i have gained confidence and can now clip the back and sides with the clippers and then i use the scissors to trim the top. The last time just before his stag do i did however have a slight mishap and the guard fell off and i took a rather huge chunk out the back of his head. With that in mind i insisted Rob went to the hairdresser as i think the pressure may have got to me and dread to think what a mess i would have made.

So hair cut done, we rushed off to buy bridesmaids presents, having completely forgotten to get them anything, then to pick up a parcel we had forgotten was at the parcel force office that turned out to be our wedding post box, then over to the venue to drop everything off and have a quick run through and final chat before the big day. Once everything had gone from the house it was tidy tidy tidy as my MIL and FIL were dog sitting for a few days from the Sunday night. Then a quick trip out to pick wedding cupcakes and stands up. Quickly packed my bag with all the essentials needed as i was going to stay at Mummy and Daddys, repacked my bag, realised i had not actually packed half the stuff i needed so packed again. Then off to the yard to finish the horses off and put them to bed, a quick walk for the dog.

Quick texts and emails to all the suppliers to confirm all was good.

Before we knew it Robs best man Richard was knocking at the door, and my dad was picking me up and mega excitement suddenly kicked in..... This time tomorrow i would be a married lady AAAGGGHHHH.

SOOOOOOO at last my Wedding day

Having decided an early night was in order the night before i started thinking about going to bed about nine o clock, come eleven i was still sat gossiping with my mum. A good night sleep was not really had, i lay down and stared into space for ages, i eventually dropped off to wake up about two convinced it was morning so lay staring into space a bit more, must have dropped off again as next time i looked at the clock it was nearly seven o clock.

Now i had decided seeing as we were having a later ceremony and hair and make up ladies weren't due till midday i was going to go and ride my horse the morning of the wedding. Everyone i told said i was mad and listed reasons not to. However i ignored them all got up and went down to the yard. I got out of the car and no one at the yard was surprised to see me at all, i had lots of offers of company for a ride out but opted to head off by myself, a bit of me time before chaos commenced.

Excuse her filthy ears and neck but this was the best view in the world the morning of my wedding.

Now despite being a not very girly girl i am a real soppy person, i can cry at an episode of hollyoaks. However i am also someone that crys and straight away looks like they have been beaten up as my eyes swell and go bright red. Out riding by my self just me and my horse Rob text to say he had opened the card and present i had left and it had made him cry it was so lovely. The waterworks started happy tears but plenty of them and once i started i couldn't stop it was like someone had opened the floodgates. I rode for a good hour and gradually regained my composure however arriving back to the yard i mumbled something about the wind in my eyes and despite looking like Frank Bruno no one questioned my puffy bright red face, and instead a bottle of champagne appeared and despite it being very early i managed a few mouthfuls and everyone wished me well and i promised a dance with them all when they arrived for the evening do. A quick kiss on the nose for Skye and i headed off home music pumping from the car stereo and heart starting to race with excitement. This time in just five hours i would be a married lady.

So back at the mad house i passed my parents neighbours wearing my jodphurs and yard boots and they looked slightly surprised, i told them i hadn't gone with a traditional wedding dress and headed in for some breakfast. Now i have no doubt many brides to be have very little appetite i however love my breakfast and managed a bowl of cereal, and two rounds of bacon sandwiches a girl has to get her strength up you know.

The next hour passed in a bit of a blur, i jumped in the shower and got out of my smelly riding clothes, and headed back downstairs and opened a can of red bull. My hair lady arrived a few minutes before quarter to twelve just as we were shifting cars about on the drive and i did a few quick introductions and wondered where my MIL was with my bridesmaids?

By the time we had lugged Melanie the hair ladies bags in and decided the best spot for hair, my MIL and oldest bridesmaid had arrived a few more introductions and lots of cuddles with Rachel who at the grand age of seven was my oldest bridesmaid we decided first job was to stick some rollers in my hair. I decided to give Rachel a pretty much free rein with what she wanted doing she opted for up and a very similar style to how mine was going to be so much to her delight Rachel than sat and had some rollers in. Hair started we munched on some pizza and i quickly moved on to have my make up done, up in the big tall chair any anxiety i had felt at my hair and make up trials had vanished as i knew i was in good hands.

The whole time i was having hair and make up done Rachel watched and you could see her getting more and more excited, the lovely make up lady Rochelle offered Rachel a bit of sparkle and a smear of lip gloss which made one seven year old a very happy little girl.

Thoroughly enjoying this report! I really enjoy your style of writing it's refreshing and down to earth. I love how you went for a ride on the morning of your wedding and the whole pack/re-pack/pack situation is so me! (I hate packing!)

Love this. I might steal this tip.

I can't decide if its a good thing or a bad thing that the story is taking so long to unfold. On the one hand it's like a soap opera of the best kind that has provided entertainment over a long period of time and on the other hand the wait is killing me!

Very sorry ladies wrote a huge section last night and then my internet crashed and it vanished into cyber space that will teach me for writing it directly onto here and not doing it in word, so here it is for the second time......

SSSSOOOOOO my wedding day at last continued......

It was a bit like musical chairs with my MIL, Mum and Rachel as we were having hair and make up done, one got finished and out the chair the next one in and then swap over, however this was the most organised musical chairs i have ever played as it all ran like clockwork. So make up on and curlers out my SIL arrived with my gorgeous littlest bridesmaid who had apparently woken up in a stinking mood, and having screamed the hotel down at breakfast had been driven round till she had a nap. I myself refuse to believe she could possibly have been like that as she is far far to cute and arrived all smiles and was fascinated by her older sisters curls that had appeared thanks to the rollers. Straight away Charlotte made herself comfortable in a chair and munched on not one but two huge slices of pizza, while chatting away.

With make up on it was back in the hairdressers chair, and hair grips were flying in left right and centre, tiara in place and Rachel commented ' Aunty Lisa you look like a princess' a quick wobbly lip moment and a very large lump in my throat but no tears, i jumped back in the make up chair for a quick touch up and to be given my lip gloss so i could do my own touch ups through the day, which was a lovely touch. Rochelle checked we were all happy with make up, we were all more than happy and we waved her off on her way and she wished me lots of luck.

Having tried my dress on a whole four times previously i had always put it on like a child puts a jumper on, that is hands in the air and sort of jump through the hole. With hair and make up done i was very uncertain how this was going to work. Everyone insisted i should step into, but i was not convinced. Melanie the hair lady, who bless her heart seeing my concerned face agreed to stay while i got into my dress, said all brides she ever sees get into dresses think they need it to go over their heads but honestly it would be fine and in fact easier to step in.

To set the scene quickly here i will explain my parents lounge is not big and there was my MIL, my Mum, my Dad hovering in and out, my SIL, Melanie the hair lady, and then the two kids and me standing in the middle in my underwear. Some kind person wrestled my dress from its home hanging on the curtain rail and released it from its duvet cover case, and while they carefully arranged it on the floor for me to attempt to step into i muttered about my enormous hips, and how it was never going to work, but following instructions i stepped into the hole and voila dress on.

My dress had an internal corset that laced and while i barked 'tighter, tighter' my MIL and Mum pulled and pulled and laced me in, then there is a zip then about a thousand buttons. The whole time they worked away doing me up, the kids sat dead still just watching, i reckon they wondered who this stranger that looked remotely like auntie Lisa but wasn't wearing a baseball cap was.

One of my Dads oldest friends who i had known since i was tiny had arranged the wedding car for us as a wedding present and i had no idea what it was or what to expect. While i was fidgetting around and my MIL and Mum were desperately trying to do the buttons up on the back of the dress my Dad came back in the room, he almost stopped in his tracks took my hands and with a tear in his eyes told me i looked lovely. I think they were probably tears of shock as i wasn't looking like his normally slightly scruffy daughter. Anyway back to the car, my Dad opened the blind so i could see and outside was a brand new Rolls Royce Phantom it was absolutely perfect, and as i lifted the kids so they could have a look excitement levels reached a whole new high, in less than an hour i would be a married lady.

As the neighbours all came out for a nosy we got back to getting ready My SIL put the kids in their gorgeous dresses, and i realised i had forgotten my garter and i probably ought to have put my shoes on before my dress. Melanie the hair lady jumped to the rescue and apologised profusely while she groped my thigh putting my garter on, then got under my skirt and sorted all the layers of material out so they laid flat. I will point out here that this is a lady i had only met once previously and she was only here to do my hair, but she was a real calming influence while i got ready and remembered all the little bits i had forgotten, i am sure she had much better things to be doing with her Saturday afternoon than sitting under my skirt, but she never said so, and i really really appreciated that extra effort she put in. After helping me into my shoes we waved her off and stood at the window looking out glass of champagne in hand.

At this point i haven't mentioned the weather, from us setting the date everyone had said 'what if it snows' ' what if it rains' what if there is a hurricane' you get the drift, a few weeks previously we had snow on the ground and i will admit Me and Rob had a minor panic and ordered wedding umbrellas. However the day of our wedding i reckon someone was smiling down on us as the sun shone and it was glorious.

The plan had always been for the kids to go with their Mum and follow me and Dad in the wedding car, however Rachel and Charlotte were sooooo excited having seen the car, i made a quick decision and asked them to travel in with me and Dad. By this time i think almost the whole of the small village i grew up in were outside the house cameras in hand, i am not the most photogenic so i quickly necked my champagne for dutch courage, briefed the kids of the plan to get out the house and into the car took my dads arm and headed outside knowing how it must feel to be famous with all the cameras flashing. The kids took it all their stride and smiled, waved and generally lapped up the attention, i debated how on earth you get a into a car with a wedding dress on with the equivalent of a hula hoop underneath it.

    More more more.....

So i wrestled my dress and hoop into the car all the while being conscious not to show my knickers to the onlookers and their cameras, my Dad lifted the kids in doors shut and lots of waving and we pulled off down the street. It was at this point i was sooooo relieved the kids were with us, the house we had just left was the house i grew up in, we go every Sunday for dinner and since i moved out i have driven down the street thousands of times, but today leaving the house memories of playing out in the street on our bikes and not being allowed past the lamp post, as we drove down the road, memories of walking that exact route with my Mum on the way to and from school, past the post office and memories of getting our penny sweets, up past the park and all the memories of a mis spent youth drinking cider on the swings. And for a moment i felt a sadness that i was no longer going to have my name the name i had for thirty years and i was no longer going to be me. A wobbly lip moment and then Rachel said 'Auntie Lisa once you and uncle Rob are married you will be my proper Auntie, cause you and uncle Rob will have the same name.' I caught Dads eye, he winked and said ' its the start of a whole new chapter of your life'

It was real make or break as i blinked back tears, thinking if i started now i would never in a million years stop all day and god i hadn't asked was my eye make up waterproof or if i started crying would it all just slide off down my face. Charlotte the littlest bridesmaid clearly not amused by the mood in the car, shifted forward in her seat and burst into a verse of the wheels on the car go round and round ' come on auntie Lisa do the actions do the actions' she shrieked excitement in her voice, the mood lifted and a huge smile spread across my face at that second any sadness lifted and i thought you silly girl obviously i am still going to be me will always be me i will just have a new name, today is a happy day, pull yourself together. The rest of the journey we laughed and laughed, we sang, we spotted planes, we waved at anyone that even glanced at the car, and as we grew closer to the venue i actually wasn't sure if i was going to burst with excitement first or the kids.

We were running slightly early so took a long route round and i took a moment to think about Rob knowing he would be there all ready and waiting i hoped he wasn't too nervous. At the evening do someone said ' were you worried he might not show' my answer ' it never even crossed my mind' and i can honestly say it never did.

The plan had always been to arrive at the venue and for all the guests to already be seated inside with the curtains shut so they didnt see me, driving down the driveway the driver commented he best pull over as he had guests behind him. As we pulled over i looked into the passing cars and the kids, me and Dad waved at the guests. For a split second i thought this isn't meant to happen, then i remembered a little nugget of information my SIL had given to me and that was ' Go with the flow, only you will know if things go wrong, don't happen in the right order' As i looked out the front windscreen i could see Emily the lady that ran the day for us trotting down the drive towards the car, she stuck her head in the window and said to the driver if we could just have five minutes to get everyone in and seated so we sat back in our chairs and Rachel asked ' What happens next' at this point i thought oooppps i haven't actually told the poor kids or even my Dad the plan from here on in. So a full team briefing began, with arm actions, humming of music, i pointed to Toby the photographer who was poised in position and as we started to move i said ' all ready girls' and Charlotte who had obviously been listening in while i was muttering earlier about not being able to step into my wedding dress piped up ' It's never going to work' alarmed i said ' whats not going to work?' she looked at me gave me the cheekiest smile and giggled and giggled.

Posting in bits so i don't lose any again.

    More more more.................

As the car pulled to a standstill the the door opened and out we got. As it had been a last minute decision i actually wasn't sure if i was keeping the kids with me, if i was taking them to see the registrar with me or if someone was going to come and whisk them away. All things i ought to have arranged previously but hey a lot of the wedding had been done on a wing and a prayer so why not this bit.

Out the car and lots of photos, the sun beamed down i held my Dads hand, held Charlottes hand, and Rachel bless her as chief bridesmaid ensured my dress was all straight and as we headed towards the doors i wasn't sure if i was going to giggle or cry. As it was i did neither cause i suddenly saw the stairs in front. As a novice long dress wearer full stop and despite the fact my heels weren't huge they were still heels i weighed up the options for getting up the stairs, and decided going up on my bum would be easier, i then glanced saw the photographer and decided no way was i doing that, so one step at a time i stepped and once i got going it wasn't actually too difficult and slowly we climbed. Emily met us at the top of the stairs. ' We have had a bit of a problem with your music' she said ' there is a really obvious blip in the middle, what do you want to do?' i looked a little alarmed and then my practical side kicked in, ' can i get the kids down the aisle and then get down myself before the blip' her answer ' yes i think so' ' lets run with it then i said' she smiled back at me and said ' you look gorgeous by the way'

Through into the back room to meet the registrar kids in tow, we all shake hands and a quick run through of plans, she then says 'and Rob has said you will choose a witness' God something else we hadn't discussed thought about or considered. I look at Dad he looks at me, i say 'eeeerrrrr my Mum' i then say quietly to Dad 'can you say sorry for springing this on her to Mum and tell her when you sit down she is a witness and will need to sign the register'

The registrar leaves leaving me, Dad and the kids alone again, it is another moment that has potential to get emotional, but i have now decided i am not going to cry so take the kids by the hand they hold my Dads hand and we have a quick bounce round in a circle at this point Emily walks in, probably thinks we have lost our minds and asks ' are you ready' ' am i ever' i answer. We make our way out the door and into position ready for our walk down the aisle. Another quick team brief and the kids are still bouncing up and down. I had chosen the Johnathon Cain Bridal march so there is a forty second piano instrumental to start that was perect for the kids to walk down to, The doors open the music starts, Rachel turned wrapped her arms round my waist and said' i love you Auntie Lisa, enjoy yourself' she turned back, took her little sisters hand and off they went, the most perfect bridesmaids a girl could of asked for.

So having decided i wasn't going to cry Rachels comment left me heart racing, lip quivering, Dad took my arm and we watched the kids in silence, tears were looking inevitable but nothing i could do we were all systems go, i looked and could see Rob waiting stood with his back to me and i thought of a thread on here ' would he turn round and look at me? we took a step Dad squeezed my arm and we were off. In just a few more minutes i would be a married lady.

Your nieces are amazing! They knew exactly what to say at just the right time. Bless them.

Meanwhile I'm all a flutter with nerves because I can feel the moment as though I was there and it's less than a month away for me. Yikes!
