My mother has cancer

SophieM, 4 October, 2008 at 17:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 127

Sorry, I am being the most demanding Hitcher in the world, ever atm.

Just had an email from mum, she has colon cancer. She's going in to hospital for surgery tomorrow - she says it "doesn't necessarily mean a death sentence, though it will mean lots of unpleasantness and probably a colostomy bag". She's going into hospital later this month for more tests. She seems incredibly calm about, although worried about how my dad will manage without her in the short and longer term. ?

I really, really hope that if it does kill her it does so quickly, and that my dad won't be too sad without her.

Very grateful for any vibes going spare.

Sophie - so sorry to hear this. I hope your mum manages to stay as strong as she sounds and fight this.

I've just been through it with my step mum and know how awful it can be. Vibes for you and your mum.

Oh, Soph, I'm so sorry. What a horrible thing to have to deal with. Fingers crossed that they've caught it in time and can fix it with surgery. Colostomy bags aren't pleasant but better that than to lose your mum.

Sending lots of positive vibes for her and a big hug for you. ?

Oh Sophie I'm so sorry. If caught early colon cancer is very treatable. I hope that's the case for your mum. Mike's dad had a cancerous lesion removed from his bowel a couple of years ago and has had nothing since. In his case he didn't have a colostomy (it depends where it is) but they have to consent you for one just in case they find it's necessary while you're under the anaesthetic (for some, it's a near certainty though).

You know where I am if I can help further. Cancer is at the forefront of my mind at the moment as a friend has just been diagnosed with breast cancer - it makes me feel like I'm doing something if i can help her at all - and the same goes for you. Email me any time.

Oh Sophie, I am sorry. It must be hard being so far away, but your mum sounds like she is just going to deal with it as it comes, as I know it's probably the best way. It is the word cancer that is so scary, I hope she is on the road to recovery soon,?

Sophie i am so sorry to hear this and know exactly how you feel as my Mum was diagnosed with Colon cancer last year after suffering from ulcerative colitis for 25 years. It was devastating when we found out.

The good news is that although she has a bag, you wouldn't know unless she tells you and has made a full recovery. She needed radio and chemo therapy but she is running around like a mad thing doing everything she used to do as well as a bit more so there are some positive stories out there!

Have a big ? and please feel free to pm me (if it works of course) if you want to have a chat.

Take care and thinking of you and your Mum x

Sophie, so sorry to hear this.

Today maybe isn't the day for the positive flipside, but my Dad's side of the family has been riddled with colon cancer, and all have made a full recovery

Oh no, how awful. I am really sorry. I hope that the operation is a big success and that she makes an excellent recovery. Sending you heaps of love and strength. I hope they've caught things early enough for a good prognosis. x

Thanks again, ladies. Kieren - she hasn't said how she found out about it; she seemed fine when I was there last month but she hates being ill and never talks about her health, which makes me suspect that she might have put off going to the doc and not got the diagnosis as early as one would hope.

She's 76 and as I understand it cancer advances more slowly in older people though. God, I hope it's not too horrible for her and dad.

?s for everyuone else who's going through this.

    Oh poor thing! ?

My mum went through colon cancer a few years ago, luckily it was discovered early so they removed part of the bowel, and then they found out the cancer hadn't spread further. It was really tough, and I can only send you my best wishes.. If you ever need to talk to someone who's been through similar (mum ended up with a colostomy bag for a few months) I'm here ?

My FIL had the same thing a few years ago. He does have a bag but still lives his life normally and has suffered nothing major since.

So sorry to hear this - the brother of a friend of H's had colon surgery last Wednesday and is doing well - he's already talking about personalising his bags with smiley faces

Hope your mother's surgery goes well and that you and your Dad are holding up with the worry. Hope it's good news soon

Oh Sophie. What a horrible piece of news for you and for your family. Your Mum is a brave woman judgiing by what you've written here, and it's sheer spirit and feistiness that gets people through these trials. Whatever happens your Dad is going to be sad, but he'll be comforted by his family and everyone else who loves him and your Mum. It'll be hard and horrid for you too, and my thoughts are with you xxx

Sophie, I'm so sorry to hear your news, lovely. There's not very much I can do practically, but I'm here if you need to let off some steam and I'm sending your mum all the vibes as I can muster for her op tomorrow and her treatment to come.

Take care, sweetheart, you know where we all are ?
