My mother has cancer

Sorry, I am being the most demanding Hitcher in the world, ever atm. Just had an email from mum, she has colon cancer. She's going in to hospital for surgery tomorrow - she says it "doesn't necessarily mean a death sentence, though it will mean lots of unpleasantness and probably a colostomy bag"....

Sorry, I am being the most demanding Hitcher in the world, ever atm.

Just had an email from mum, she has colon cancer. She's going in to hospital for surgery tomorrow - she says it "doesn't necessarily mean a death sentence, though it will mean lots of unpleasantness and probably a colostomy bag". She's going into hospital later this month for more tests. She seems incredibly calm about, although worried about how my dad will manage without her in the short and longer term. ?

I really, really hope that if it does kill her it does so quickly, and that my dad won't be too sad without her.

Very grateful for any vibes going spare.

Sophie, I am so incredibly sorry to read this. It's hard when family are ill (my uncle just had his prostate op due to cancer) and harder still when you are so far away.

This doesn't automatically mean a death sentence, Sophie. I am keeping everything crossed for you, lovely lady. xx

Sorry to read your news, Sophie.

Sending loads of vibes that the operation is a great success. Your Mum sounds like she has a good attitude, I hope this helps her through her treatment.

Sophie, I've just seen this. I'm so sorry to hear your news, how hard for you being far away. It's horrible knowing someone has cancer, but it doesn't always need to mean the worst. My Step-mum was diagnosed with cancer this year and the shock was horrible, but we're "used to it" now and just getting on with helping her through the treatment, and she's doing well and her prognosis is really good.

If you need a rant or vent, then rant away. ?

I am sorry to read this, lots of positive vibes that all is well for your Mam. Take care of yourself as well. It is difficult when you are so far away as it can feel as if you are at a complete loss. Bigs hugs and positive vibes to you all.

I'm so sorry Sophie. It times like these when it really sucks to be so far away.

I am another one with a parent who survived it - my Dad has just celebrated 12 years C-free.

I hope that she can be treated quickly and have it over and done with.

Hi, probably not much help really, but my dad has had Colon Cancer, and my mum is currently having treatment for Breast Cancer, so there's been a fair amount of cancer in our family.

IF you are interested, my dad had colon cancer about 9 years ago, just after retiring. He had an op and the tumour removed, plus quite a bit of his colon removed, then a 'temporary' colostomy bag attached. Then he had another op which removed the colostumy bag followed by radiotherapy. He has been cancer free ever since. Not sure why/how he got a temporary bag but clearly there are lots of options. Also, thing the 'more tests' are standard, to make sure the cancer hasnt spread./ My dad kind of wiped out 12 months of his life having treatment etc for it, but is now all clear.

My mum has just had a masectomy and is on her 3rd chemo treatment, with radiotherapy to follow....

Cancer is an evil disease, but becoming more and more curable/treatable. Lots of positive vibes for your mum at this time.?

Where are your parents, in relation to where you live.?

Thinking of you Sophie - it must be an awfully anxious time for you, especially being at a distance.

My MIL has a colostomy as a result of treatment for bowel cancer; that was over 10 years ago and she has made a complete recovery?

Oh Sophie I'm so sorry ? My nan had a cancerous growth removed and most of her large intestine in 2004 at the grand old age of 73. She too had a colostomy. She's dealt with it all remarkably well and is now absolutely fine.

Thinking of you and your family ?

I'm sorry to hear your news Sophie and it must be so difficult when you live so far away from each other.

I'm another whose parent has had Cancer. You may know that my Dad was diagnosed with bladder Cancer in January of this year. Just as Winkle said, it is an awful shock but you 'get used to it' which is awful in itself.

Lots of positive vibes heading your way. ?

Thank you so much, everyone. I'm going to call her in an hour or so so will update then.

Bones - I'm in London and she's in Johannesburg, so it's pretty far. There's not too much of a time difference though.

Sending all the vibes possible Sophie. I know how helpless and gutted you must be feeling.

We've had it strike 2 family members since January last year, and it DOESN'T necessarily mean a death sentence, although she's totally right that its darned unpleasant and could mean a bag.

I understand your hopes, can think of nothing worse than watching those I love suffer. BUT I hope it's ben caught early and she just gets over it quickly and with as much discomfort as possible.?

Just spoken to her - my god, she has nerves of steel ?

She sounds fine, very positive and not too nervous about her appt witht he specialist tomorrow. She thinks she'll have the surgery in the next couple of weeks. She's being so incredibly brave, bless her - I really hope it makes a difference.

Thanks again for all the good wishes.
