My mother has cancer

Sorry, I am being the most demanding Hitcher in the world, ever atm. Just had an email from mum, she has colon cancer. She's going in to hospital for surgery tomorrow - she says it "doesn't necessarily mean a death sentence, though it will mean lots of unpleasantness and probably a colostomy bag"....

Sorry, I am being the most demanding Hitcher in the world, ever atm.

Just had an email from mum, she has colon cancer. She's going in to hospital for surgery tomorrow - she says it "doesn't necessarily mean a death sentence, though it will mean lots of unpleasantness and probably a colostomy bag". She's going into hospital later this month for more tests. She seems incredibly calm about, although worried about how my dad will manage without her in the short and longer term. ?

I really, really hope that if it does kill her it does so quickly, and that my dad won't be too sad without her.

Very grateful for any vibes going spare.

Oh Sophie I'm so sorry you have to go through this, and it must be bloody awful being so far away. How are your parents coping? have you spoken to your sisters yet? do you think you'll be able to go back to see her?

If there is anything I can do please just shout. I'm not far away ?

    Hi Sophie

From someone who has been through the same with her Mum, I know exactly how worrying this is for you. And my Mum was the same - strong and calm - which made me wonder if it was to keep everyone else together?

My Mum has had all sorts of operations for cancer and had various bits of her anatomy removed. At 77 she is fighting fit and has more energy than 2 teenagers - fact! She wore them out when they went to visit her for a week!

Good luck for your Mum. Sending lots of positive vibes for her. And loads of 'try not to worry too much' vibes for you (although I know just how impossible that is) ?

Thanks again everyone. Quick update: she saw the specialist this morning and she'll have the surgery at the beginning of November. She has to have a week of radiotherapy, then the op and the removal of a large chunk of her colon and the colostomy sorted, then three to 6 months of chemo. It's more drastic than I thought but she still seems v positive.

Hi Soph. So sorry to near your news.

FWIW as another piece of anecdotal evidence my uncle got colon cancer in his sixties and whilst the treatment was clearly unpleasant at the time he is now fully recovered. You might possibly have met him at my wedding but I doubt you'd remember given you were (cough, ahem) busy then.

I hate reading threads like this as i feel i 'know' hitchers and find it difficult to say things in text, and it is frustrating that you can not be a 'real' comfort when others are hurting.

positive thoughts your way Sophie, and you are not on the needy register at all, needyness is when people are needy when they have no need to be (how many needs is that?) You are not like that and give so much, so time to take back from hitched now.

    Fluff over
