My son wants to participate.........any ideas?

Sophie(B2Bsept11), 17 January, 2011 at 14:20 Posted on Planning 0 16

Can any of you help please.

My 8 year old son keeps asking me what his job is at the wedding and to be honest I have no idea. I have asked him and he doesn't know what he wants to do ( typical 8 year old) but I am really eager for him to have his own "job" for the day so he can share our magical day with us.

Any ideas would be most welcome, I did ask him if he would like to read a poem in church, he didn't seem overally keen, but maybe an option.

Could he be a ringbearer possibly? He's a bit young to be a witness unfortunately... some places will let you as there's no actual legal age requirement, but I think most registrars would not let an 8 year old as he probably won't understand what is going on well enough.

Ring bearer is an obvious one - he just looks after the rings (the Best Man usually looks after the RB) and brings them up when the person conducting the ceremony asks for them.

Not too difficult, not 'girly', and should work quite well?

EDIT: great minds think alike lol

Is he too old to be a Page Boy? My sons will be 6 and 2 when we get married and we're having them as page boys. I'm also thinking about asking the eldest if he'd like to do a little reading and/or carry the rings. As far as he's concerned this wedding is for all 4 of us and the two of them are as important as the bride and groom.

    I ❤️ my boys

(Sorry, that was a bit fluffy for this time of day! ?) ?

    Hi,

My Son is 8yrs also although he would of just turned 10yr when we marry, he is being a Pageboy and is carrying the rings and will pass to the Best Man once he reaches the top, although at the moment OH does not have a Best Man and we have talked about this, if he can't get the Best Man he wants that maybe our Son could be his mini-bestman?! basically have the rings and stand at the front of the church with OH.

Thanks, I had thought about that, but i'm not too keen on the ring pillow. Is there anything to use instead of a pillow?

My friends son was about the same age at their wedding and his role was best man no. 2, which he loved, he handed out the orders of service and then stood with his dad and the official best man and even though he didn't hand the rings over he held the bride and grooms hymn books which in his eyes was an important role and really worked.

Also get him involved in the favour making etc.

Of course, you could use a nice box instead. I am not keen on pillows either, too easy to drop them or have the rings slide off them I think, especially with mini people in charge of them LOL!

I went to a wedding where the groom's 7-year-old son was "mini best man", I am not sure if he was ring bearer as well (I think he might have been)... he wore the same suit as the ushers/best man. it was very cute and made him feel grown up.

He could simply carry them in the box in his hand and hand the box to the best man?

I had a bride with a similar problem. We came up with quite a unique job.... chief announcer! I was doing all day MCing and evening disco so was able to take care of it. Basically any small announcements, i wrote on a card and he read using the mic, including grace before the meal. The best moment was in the evening when he announced his mum and dads first dance.... because the bride and groom didn't know about that one....a real magic moment.

My son was 8 at the time of my own wedding & he was the "ring bearer" we had a little ring cushion made & he then carried the wedding rings on that for us.

He loved being a part of the day & being dressed like the men in the bridal party, he cringes now though when he looks back at the pictures as he will be 15 next.

My fiance's son is 10 years old, he is his Dads 'best boy' (his dad still has a best man as well) but will basically do the role of a page boy, I dont think its too old really, he is still shorter than me so its okay, and he is happy with that role as he has done it before. I had hoped he would do a short reading, even 2 lines but unfortunately he didnt like that idea! Can't blame him really, I wouldnt want to lol.

I have a 7 1/2 year old son with mild autism. His job for the day is to be the ring bearer. He will give the rings to the best man in front of everyone xx

LI think the 'best boy' idea is really sweet!

If he is up for it, how about a reading?

We are having this one and think it is quite suited to kids (but maybe he is too young?) -

A wedding is a party with,
    Of course, a wedding cake.
But sometimes by the time it comes,
    It's hard to stay awake.
People need to talk a lot,
And laugh and joke and kiss,
And cry - why do they cry? - and mention
    love and bliss.

    Two people have decided that
They'll share one house for life,
And call themselves, instead of friends,
    A husband and a wife.

And so we have to get dressed up,
And eat a lot, and wait
For hours till they finally serve
    The great big wedding cake.

That is so so sweet, I would love him to do something like that, he has enough confidence, so that isn't an issue. It just maybe a tad long for him, thats all. But I love the poem, would reduce me to tears most definately.
