My surname doesnt feel my own...????

teeheeyoucrazyguys!, 6 October, 2009 at 15:57 Posted on Planning 0 33

Tis weird.

Having inherited my mothers name as my surname, it doesnt feel that much of a jump. Yet, the name doesnt feel like mine. The kids at school - when they remember - call me it, and the staff and i still think 'are they talking to me?' When hubby says it, it doesnt feel like its my name and its too weird seeing it in print..... will i get used to it? Marrieds, how are you coping?? lolol.... I think deep down i'll always think of myself as my maiden name. LOLOL.

random post. Sorry.

Don't worry! I think it's quite normal. It's a bit strange and took me a while too. I even nearly signed something in my old name by accident! I've been rubbish at doing all the official name change stuff (and I've been married nearly 2 years - ooops ?) You will get used to it eventually and learn to love it!!!

Im quite attached to my sirname (Rutter) and I really dont want to change it but HTB seems quite offended by this, I said maybe I could have both names but to me Lainey Rutter-Rees sounds stupid, not sure what im going to do yet!

I can understand where your coming from, it must feel really strange, I hope you get used to it :-)

There is no way I could have given up my surname, I think I would have felt the same as you. MrsBear didn't want to either, so we've both kept our own names, which a lot of people think is weird, but seems completely natural to us.

Hi, although Im not married yet I can understand what you mean. It feels like your losing part of your identity. Kids at school ALWAYS get my name wrong and my married name will be much easier 'Jones', but that doesnt change the fact that you have spent all your life being one name, suddenly to change to another. I spent months saying I wasnt going to change my surname - now Ive decided I want to, but that doesnt mean it wont be wierd.

Sorry, dont know if that was much help.

Just out of curiosity CB, are you both Ms and Ms or Mrs and Mrs... it makes perfect sense to me to keep your names tbh....i dont think you NEED to take on each others names at all.... could get very confusing with the post! Smiley smile

Although I love my surname I am actually looking forward to taking my OH surname but purely because it's my kids surname, I am the odd one out in my house lol!

I think i feel completly different from people on here as Im looking so forward to taking my fiance's name... i have never even concidered not taking it, its never even popped up in conversation. And to be honest id never thought about this topic until reading posts on here!! :-)
Im looking so forward to changing my name and using it... Its not that i dont like my surname as its never bothered me growing up.
Its very interesting to see how many people opt to kep their own name :-)

I feel the same as you, Nic. I can't wait to have my H2B's name! ?

But that's not to say it won't feel really weird for a while! Haha, I guess when you've had one name for so long, it'd perfectly natural to feel strange until you get used to it!

I'm sure once you get used to it you'll be fine, Teehee. It must be strange though, especially when you've got wee kids calling you it all the time!

I think it's bound to be strange when your maiden name has been your name for so long!

I'm still getting used my married name, and have referred to myself or signed as Miss T rather than Mrs M on a number of occasions! I'm sure we'll get used to it in time Teehee, after all we are newlyweds still!

    Hello

I was thinking that today as I look at and envelope with Mrs Croft on it !

Tis weird but as I've kept my maiden name for work I get to use both. I do have to remember what name to sign but I really like being a different name when work finishes- makes more of a cut off from the stress of work and a welcome to leisure time :0 )

We both use Ms, but we have both done so for years. I dislike the concept of Miss and Mrs, but won't rant on about that one, I'd just bore you all!

Agree about the post, could get v confusing, at least we don't have the same first initial!

Both being girls is great on the phone though, we each have different bills in our name (we pay out of a joint account, but each set up certain accounts) but we can pretend to be each other on the phone, rather than going through the whole "we can only talk to the bill payer" thing!

My OH has started trying out my new name for size even though we are still 7 months away (OMG is that all???) so I'm really hoping that I'll be used to it by the time we get that far.. How will I sign my name though? Think that will be the hardest part, redesigning my sig!

It will seem strange for a while but it won't be long till your old name seems like the strange one when you think about it.

On the plus side, my second name is pants in my signature so I'm looking forward to a change so hopefully I can do any better with the new one!!!! lol

I have decided to keep my maiden name for work as it will be a bit confusing for customers as my FIL is also my boss and I don't particularly want the hassle of explaining it every time.

But I will change to my new name for everything else...so I sort of get the best of both worlds!

It's been 5 months and I'm still not used to it. Feels as if I'm "pretending" whenever I use it.

I am very traditional in that i have always planned to take my husbands name - or at least i was until i met my soon to be husband and now i dont want his name coz i think mine sounds better! I definately dont like double-barrell surnames, so have been entertaining the idea of us BOTH changing our names....H2B isnt having any of it though! So, a little reluctantly I will become Mrs Hay - I am sure I will love it when I have got used to it though!

I think whats also weird is its my family name before marriage, mum uses her maiden name as shes a divorcee so for me to be also called that is weird. I had planned to do a speech and assure my dad that I would always be a Mc. Cant help feeling like its a kick in the nuts that ive taken on mums name, when infact i have by pure accident! I almost changed it to my new surname for my Equity card, back in 1998, how weird would that have been??! sheesh...

Just out of curiosity...... if a Bride has a double barrell name already and is marrying a Groom with a double barrell name, do they have a quadruple barrell name? ?

It depends how attached you are to your maiden name maybe? It took me no time to get used to it and even signing my new name was natural.

All the best in adjusting to your new identity!

    You can imagine the conversation:-

    "Hello, Streetcars"

"Can I have a taxi please"

    "What name love"

    "Compton,Smythe,Grimmings, Farquar"

"So, that's a taxi for 4 then love - ten minutes OK..."

    ?

Totally getting confused with the whole name thing....what doesn't help is that another Hitcher has my exact name too so I keep getting confused when I see status updates on Facebook that aren't me! (You know who you are! lol ?)

Whats also confusing for me is OH and I have the exact same initials now, so I keep getting really confused when I see the post, or a bank card lying on the side! And don't get me started on this new signature!
