My wedding cake making trial, test one! *Flash*

rachieb13782, 24 February, 2011 at 09:02 Posted on Planning 0 19

I was watching baking made easy (think that's what its called) and she made a 3 tier cake. It looked really easy and i love making cake, so me and my sister brought the cake tins and everything we needed and thought we would give it a try! We decided to only do 2 tiers as a 3 tier was way to much cake to get rid of!

Here is the results -

What do you think? Were going to do another trial in a few months, but in a different style. i think we will do a 3 tier with pillars, the bottom cake will have large butterflies with the ribbon. the middle will have a large purple bow and the top cake will have little butterflies with ribbon and little people on top!

Not my cup of tea, but as you are having so many trials, doesnt that defeat the object of trying to save money or is that not the issue??

Well we were going to pay £200 for a very simple cake from m&s. so far we have spent hardly anything making this cake so as long as i come under budget by £100 i will be happy.

Also im on a small budget for the wedding so saving money where i can seems to be a good option for me.

I think it looks brill, particularly for a 1st attempt. Just a thought though, do you know you can have your butterflies with the wings open? When you've cut them out, place them in a bit of cardboard that's been folded in the shape of an accordian (not sure how to describe this!) so when it's drying the wings are spanned. That way when you attach it to the cake they'll look as though they've 'flown on' to the cake.

Fantastic cake for a first attempt!

I could probably give you loads of tips but I don't want to overwhelm you ? Can I ask what kind of cake it is? I'm just thinking about mentioning dowels if you're planning on having a 3 tier cake. The last thing you want is a sagging cake!

I think it's great - I think I saw that tv programme too - was it the one where she decorated it with red dots?

Only tip I would say is make sure the ribbon joins are at the same point on both tiers - so you can make that the back and no one will see. (Didn't mean that as a criticism!)

    I want cake now......If I make tea can I have some???? ?

Thanks, me and my sister brought the cake smoother the cake tins, cake glue and dowels. we made a nice butter cream to go around the cake then put the icing on when it had set. followed instructions from the recipe on the internet, was very easy to follow. ?
