**My Wedding Report - 7th August 2010** Loads of PICS included

The Sock Chicken, 26 August, 2010 at 22:10 Posted on Planning 0 54

Ok, so I think I have kept you all waiting long enough for this. I will try and keep it short and straight to the point. Here goes:

Wednesday 4th August

This was my last day at work, except I don’t think I did a lot as I was so excited! Mid morning I was called downstairs where I was given presents and a card from everybody. I cried while reading all the lovely messages. I received a bottle of wine, photo frame and some bride and groom mugs. I took them around the building to show everyone and say thanks, and when I came back, noticed my keys had gone from my bag. I left early at 4.30 and went outside to find my car covered in veiling and balloons, and the inside was covered in confetti and rice! On the back window was a sign saying ‘Bride to Be’ and there were cans tied on strings attached to my exhaust!! Loads of people gathered at the windows to watch me drive off which was lovely. I then went to get my nails done.

Thursday 5th August

This is the day I went to collect my dress, this is also when I started to get really, really excited. I spent the rest of the day sorting out wedding things, buying last minute bits & bobs, and cleaning the house. At 6, my then H2B returned home from work with a car full of balloons and play balls with jiffy envelopes stuck to the window with ‘Husband to be’ written on them. He also had presents from work - garden sprinkler, garden gloves, expensive champagne and $250 for our honeymoon.

We got changed and headed to the church for our rehearsal. I giggled all the way down the aisle and through the vows, but it did all suddenly start to feel very real.

At this point may I tell anyone who is worried about forgetting everything after the rehearsal - don’t worry - the vicar will prompt you on the day - we forgot loads!

Friday 6th August

For some reason I felt extremely calm - the calmest I had been in weeks! Then H2B went to the garage to see & help with the van (that still wasn’t finished!!) I went into town to get the mum’s thank you flowers and pick up my little sister from where they were staying. She came and helped me to set the venue with me. It was lucky she was with me as if she wasn’t, I probably wouldn’t have stopped to eat!
We put all the place cards, favour boxes and table names out, and left everything else for the venue to sort out for us.
I then went over to see the van which was (thankfully) just finished (although it still needs to go back for little bits). Then it was back home where instead of BIL and Van driving usher coming to the pub with us for drinks, they came round to clean the van and put the interior back in. They finally finished at 9!! This is when my CBM came round, and then H2B left to go to his parents. It was such a rush and later on I got a text to say he had left his speech in his work bag! At 10.00 I still hadn’t had tea and still had the kitchen to clean and the spare room to sort out. My CBM was brilliant - she sprang into action and scrubbed the kitchen to perfection while I ate and then she washed up while I sorted her room out and hung my dress in my room. We then sat up talking and did face masks till almost 1 when we decided we should go to bed - we were like teenagers on a sleepover - too excited to go to sleep!

Well done if you got so far, not even started on the day yet! And there was me saying I would keep it short. I’ll let you read so far while I type the rest!!

THE WEDDING DAY - SATURDAY 7TH AUGUST

I woke up when the alarm went off at 7, got up, knocked on CBM door and went and made us a coffee. The next hour flew by and then we headed to the hairdressers where we ended up being so early that we were there before the stylists! At this point I was still unbelievably calm. We went in and they got started on my hair straight away, while the bridesmaids discussed what they were having (I let them have whatever they wanted). They all decided on different variations of curled updos, one with half up, half down, and the other two with it swept to the side. They all looked gorgeous which is when I started getting a bit emotional. While we were having our hair done, we were provided with croissants to eat, which was brilliant as neither myself or CBM had eaten anything that morning. When I was done my neighbour picked us all up and took us back to the house.

CBM then turned into mother and made us all croissants, pain au chocalat and coffee. At this point the nerves were beginning to kick in and I only managed a few bites of croissant. I also had an upset stomach (sorry if TMI) and ended up being in the loo when the florist arrived. She insisted on waiting as she wanted to see me, which was a bit awkward!! I came down and saw the bouquets which were absolutely gorgeous. She had just dropped off the buttonholes and told me that she had just seen the most chilled out groom ever! This was a relief as he had dropped his daughter off near the hairdressers in the morning, and she had said he was really nervous.

I then gave the bridesmaids their presents of bags and jewellery, which they all loved. Myself and CBM then started doing make up. It was still ridiculously early but I needed to do something, and was super paranoid about being late! I wish now that I had waited till the photographer arrived so there would be photos of me putting my make up on! I think it was shortly after this that the photographer arrived, and for a while things were awkward as we didn’t really have anything to do and I was kind of pacing looking for things to keep me busy! I wish I had remembered to buy some bubbly to drink during this bit.

One by one the bridesmaids went upstairs and put their dresses on, they all looked gorgeous. At about 11.45 I started to get into my dress. Again, stupidly early, but I was so worried about it taking longer than we thought it would. Except it didn’t and I was standing all ready to go by about 12.15!! The van then arrived and looked gorgeous with all the ribbons on and the bride and groom monkeys in the back (my little sister made these for us at the animal workshop where she works at weekends). Then my dad arrived. Then the pageboy (CBM’s son - her sister had him for the night). He got dressed and looked so cute. Then the flower girl arrived, she was already in her dress and looked like a princess. I then spent the next 15 minutes pacing and asking what the time was! Think I drove everyone mad! Van driver usher offered me a swig from his hip flask, but my Dad made such a fuss about it being a bad idea that I didn’t!!

I think finally everyone got fed up of me pacing so we went and got in the vans. Some of the neighbours had come out to wave me off which was lovely. When we pulled up at the church, there were people still going in. What I later found out was that I was so early that S was still outside when he heard the van coming down the road and had to run in quickly! (Good job we had a vehicle with a distinctive engine sound!)

By this point I was feeling quite sick, I don’t think it helped that it was hot in the back of the van, I kept taking deep breaths, while my dad made it worse by going ‘you’re ok, stop worrying’! We were greeted by the vicar, and the photographer was snapping away at me getting out of the van. There were also loads of people in the street just watching, including some people from work who came to have a look.
We went into the entrance, laid out my dress and then the vicar went off. The music started and I began to walk in. I looked around and smiled at everyone like the vicar had told me to. He also told S to turn round and look at me which was lovely, although it was at this point where my chin started to wobble and I came very close to crying! S just kept looking at me and grinning. He asked if I was ok, and I nodded but was shaking! The ice was then broken as the vicar started (ours did the marriage first, followed by the rest of the service, some do it the other way). This was the point where S said ‘I will’ before the vicar had finished speaking, everyone laughed as the vicar said ‘we have a very keen groom here’!! This relaxed me a lot and we turned and started the vows. It was very emotional, and S nearly cried whilst saying his vows, I glanced at his twin brother (best man) who also nearly went. Luckily S pulled himself together, or I would have gone too!! Before we knew it we were married and we got on with the rest of the service. We couldn’t stop grinning at each other.

Outside, the photographer decided we should crack on with photos as the sky had turned very grey/black. We did these quite quickly, and got in the van which is when the heavens opened. Talk about good timing. We were so thirsty and I had forgotten to put water in the van. Note to all brides - make sure there is some water in your wedding transport - you will want it!

We arrived at the reception venue, and the owners came out with huge umbrellas for us and helped us inside. We had our pimms inside instead of on the lawn as planned! Luckily it wasn’t long before it dried up, and the photographer took us outside to have a load more photos done.

We then went through for our meal. We had the speeches first. My Dad’s was quite short but very good and not too embarrassing, although he did mention that I talk a lot, which everyone found funny! S went next and thanked everyone while I handed out pressies. He then said some lovely words about me which brought tears to my eyes. Next was the best man who delivered a long but fantastic speech. Just when we thought he had finished, he stood back up and said he had a wedding present for us - his half of the campervan. Cue me bursting into tears and nearly squishing him with a hug. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room!

We then had dinner and we went round in between courses talking to everyone. I barely ate a thing, I just never felt hungry. I didn’t drink anything either. In between main and dessert we cut the cake. After dessert everyone went outside to eat cake and drink coffee on the lawn.

Now for the horrible bit - I felt really, really ill. I think it was a combination of the build up of stress, excitement, nerves, and then the overwhelming part of the day, possibly mixed with how tight my dress was. Also I may have been a bit dehydrated. I then spent the next hour having my dress loosened, then back and forth to the loo being ill. Oops. S came with me too bless him, which was sadly the only time we got to spend time alone on the day - locked in the ladies loo!

By the time the evening guests arrived I was feeling better and got my dress tightened back up for the first dance. We shuffled along to The Beatles ‘Something’ and then everyone joined us on the dance floor for Marvin Gaye ‘Let’s Get it On’.

We then danced the evening away. Surprisingly no-one offered to buy us a drink until much later into the night, and we had to start a tab behind the bar, which was added on to our final bill! The DJ finished at midnight, we watched everyone get into taxi’s and then we walked home (we live just round the corner). We were so tired, but still buzzing, and also starving by this point (I never had any buffet or wedding cake either), so we put the kettle on and had a pain au chocolat while we read the guest book and opened a few cards. Then we went to bed.

We both had an amazing day, and S said my dress was amazing, and that I did my own make up perfectly 🧸

Well done if you managed to get through this. I didn’t mean it to be so long, but there was loads I wanted to share.

You will be rewarded with photos shortly, but first some N&P’s and some tips.

These are the style of photos we wanted, and that is one of my favourites so far. They are my 4 nephews. Looking forward to seeing the rest now on Wednesday. And you are right - I haven't stopped smiling - I loved every minute of my day, and to contradict what other brides say - I don't think it went fast at all.

That should be in my list of tips - don't worry about the weather, it's the one thing that is out of your control. I was really lucky with the weather, but even if it rains all day, a good photographer will still manage to get some good shots.
