Mystery Weightloss?!

SingleNoMore, 4 April, 2013 at 09:56 Posted on Planning 0 11

So I’m getting married next Saturday, and I’d had my final dress fitting a month ago, but I wanted to pop back to the shop because at my last fitting the modesty panel behind the laces wasn’t sewn on correctly, so I just wanted to put my mind at rest by checking it.

So I get the dress on and…. It doesn’t fit! It’s way too big! The assistant asked me if I’d been trying to lose more weight after my final fitting but I hadn’t! I honestly haven’t changed my lifestyle at all in the last month. To be honest I’ve had almost three weeks OFF from the gym so if anything I was concerned the dress might be tight!

They laced it up and could get an entire arm down the back of my dress. No joke! I couldn’t believe it! The thing is, none of my clothes had been feeling loose so I was SO confused. Fortunately the seamstress was due at the shop that evening so I had to wait 1 hour and half for her and I got re-adjusted. When she showed me where she’d pinned it was about two inches narrower, not just in my waist but chest and all over my top half. I JUST don’t get it.

I’m now going back on Sunday and hopefully it’ll fit better because I’m collecting it on Wednesday!

Drama I didn’t need! :-( How on earth can you lose that much weight without even noticing?!

I’m now nervous that I’m gonna change again in between now and the wedding for goodness sake! What the heck!

This has happened to so many of my friends! Their theory is that they don't realise how busy and stressed they are, they they're burning more calories at the same time as not eating as much as usual through anxiety. My dress shop said that it happened to a few of her brides too.

Glad your seamstress fixed it though!!

Are you sure they had you in the right dress?! That someone else hasn't ordered the same design?

Just seems like a lot when your clothes are still fitting normally!

Pleased the seamstress was able to fix it, though.

Oh, how I wish this would happen to me. I would definitely notice, though, I've been trying to hard to lose weight and it's been so slow going ?

However, if none of your clothing is loose, I doubt it's really weight loss and more that they've done something to the dress they shouldn't have. If there had been extra material for it to be let out (for example, if it had previously been taken in and still had the fabric there, they could have let it out instead of just adjusting the modesty panel? It sounds fishy to me, and I hope they've got it right now for the wedding!

Another possibility is that you had on someone else's dress and now that poor girl will be coming into the shop to try on her dress and find it's a few inches too SMALL!

Oh crumbs i hope it's the right dress!!! I mean it was in a dress bag which has my name written on it, and it had my veil and underskirt attached to it....so I don't see how a mixup could've occurred!? And I bought the dress a year ago and don't think they sell it anymore so it's unlikely someone else has it.

Yes I'm almost inclined to think that the seamstress did something dodgy with it since the last fitting, but i can't understand it. Baring in mind I was a size 8 at the last fitting, losing that much in trunk-circumference is just plain weird.

If it was just my stomach area I thought maybe i could put it down to Time Of The Month or bloating... but this makes no sense!

Fingers crossed it was just some dodgy seamstress-ness going on last time. I think I'd be asking for another fitting next week though, just in case.

If you were interested you could measure your bust and waist and compare it to your original measurements when you ordered the dress? Mine were on the dress order form (luckily, as they'd put down that my waist was 6 inches smaller than it was - when I noticed I had to go in and get remeasured before they ordered the dress!).

Very strange. I'm sure the seamstress will be able to sort it, just eat a lot of pies in the meantime!

You know what, the more I think about it the more I think there's no way I've lost that much weight in the last month. The seamstress MUST have done something funny with the dress since my final fitting. There were a few bits around the back where the fabric looked like it had tension in it for some reason, which we only noticed when it was on me last time, so she said she'd loosen a few pintucks to smooth the fabric and release the tension, but it wasn't a size-change and I wasn't due to go back again (until I picked the dress up.) But i'm thinking maybe she got a bit overenthusiastic with it and ended up loosening the fabric?!

Is she going to charge me again when I go and try it on on Sunday do you think??

If they try to, I would be fighting it.

As you say, there's no way you can lose that much weight in a month and not notice!

Do you know how much the dress was altered the very first time? i.e. would your original measurements be far off your current ones or do you think you've stayed relatively consistent for the past year?

It was a sample so the dress was never my size in the first place. So I didn't have measurements done. I bought it a year ago and it was about 4 sizes too big, so my fittings took place last month.

When I expressed my total shock at the weightloss in the bridal shop they were just laughing it off saying it was a mystery and i should eat some more pies etc. Which would be fine if I'd just lost a bit, but not that much!

Hallelujah the dress fits! I feel like Cinderella! It fit like a glove it was great. She's clearly altered it as she showed me where the new fastenings were inside. It's still a huge mystery what happened but all I care is that it fits! Thank heavens. I can safely go and collect it Wednesday once steamed.

I GET MARRIED ON SATURDAY!!!!!!!! Can't believe it's finally here!
