Riohound, 3 September, 2014 at 22:33 Posted on Planning 0 5

We are having a vintage/rustic theme to our wedding and I really like the look of naked cakes but not sure how practical they are???

I really want one of these too...but I was thinking the same thing, they look like they may fall apart when in transit ?

I assume you mean without icing, like a victoria sponge? I think they look great! I had a three baked cheesecakes! They will have to be made at the last min!

I'm a massive fan of these! They can look lovely and the best bit as far as I'm concerned is that they usually have to be baked just before the day as there's no icing to preserve them. It means they usually taste absolutely fresh and amazing too. Smiley smile

I'm a big fan too and I will probably have one as I don't like fruit cake and I'm not a massive fan of marzipan!

I personally don't see why they would be any less practical than traditional iced cakes, but I could be missing something! They won't be as heavy as it doesn't have all the icing and marzipan on it. It would probably need some level of finishing when it was delivered to the venue i.e positioning fruit, or flowers, dusting with icing sugar etc.

I suppose the biggest down side would be it would need to be made only a day or 2 before as it will need to stay fresh, but a good baker should be making a lovely moist sponge anyway. Depending on the type of sponge could help this.

I mentioned this to someone I know and was shot down and told that 'It has to be fruit cake as this goes so much further..' yes it might go further, but I the BRIDE don't like it so therefore won't have it! lol

I wanted one of these so contacted a couple of bakeries for prices and a couple refuse to do them because they have to be made the morning of the wedding because they arent iced they can get dry. The quotes i did get were far too expensive IMO for sponge cake.

As per my last reply to your other thread on this, mine was fine.

It was baked the day before and was still very moist on the day.

It cost be £450 so not overly priced for a wedding cake either.
