We are having a vintage/rustic theme to our wedding and I really like the look of naked cakes but not sure how practical they are???

I'm having a naked cake. The only difference is that they need to be baked close to the day as they don't have the icing to keep them moist. X

Sorry to hijack but I also love the look of this style cake but was concerned about them going dry before people had chance to eat? I know some people will eat on the day but I'm sure there are others that will want to take theirs home. Are there any past brides with experience? X

As someone who has eaten lots of naked cakes I can confirm they are fine through until the end of the evening although I must admit I'm not sure when they were prepared or what was involved there. Do we have any cake people on this forum? If you are having it professionally made they will know what to do

A useless contribution to this conversation:

    I'm having this one

I've been to a couple of wedding fairs with them, both times it was a hot day and the buttercream in the middle had melted and they looked awful! The top tiers started sliding off as well, they didn't seem to be very stable.

Thanks all. I'm worried about how it will stand up to the heat as we are getting married at end of June . I'm not too bothered about having a cake at all but my fella is! So just thought this would go with the theme .

This is was my naked cake.

Not sure what you mean by not practical.... If you mean in terms of storing after, we froze the top tier and defrosted it after honeymoon. It was still amazing!

    Go for it!!

We are having a naked cake and get married in August next year. Our cake lady said she will bake it the night before/morning of the wedding to ensure it is as fresh as it can be and she is going to use a stabiliser in the butter cream to hold it in place. I don't like overly fussy wedding cakes and it's the only type of cake me and OH agreed on. Speak to the cakeperson who you are planning to book with and see what they advise.

I spoke to one baker who says she entrusts a sugar/water spray in a small bottle to one of the bridesmaids and they have to 'moisten' the cake with it throughout the day.....

As far as I'm aware, no one was given anything to moisten my cake during the day and it was still really lovely and moist when it was cut up in the evening. Plus it was still lovely and pretty moist after I'd frozen it & then defrosted it weeks later.

Just make sure you try samples or go on recommendations. My cake maker gave me a huge sample which lasted days anyway and was practically the size of a small Victoria sponge anyway so we got to test what it'd be like after a couple of days.

Yeah, I did think she was being a little overzealous about the whole thing!

I am still trying to convince my OH to let me have a naked cake, yours looks incredible by the way Smiley smile

I find icing can be a bit too much, so I really love the idea of having a naked wedding cake, plus they look so different and gorgeous!
