Name Change Question

Stephisaur, 22 March, 2017 at 12:14 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi lovelies

I'm planning on changing my name when I get married. I have already received my post-dated passport in my new name.

However, someone on another forum has told me that your marriage certificate does not automatically change your name but hasn't provided any supporting information.

The Deed Poll office states the following:

SO, my question to those who changed their name to their OH's straight away, did you have to do anything else?

I was told by my registry office that the marriage certificate IS your name change.

    Hi,

I got married in October and took my husbands surname (although I'm still not used it!). I just used my marriage certificate as proof of new name. It does automatically change your surname if you want to take your partners name. So I just sent marriage certificate off as proof of name change to bank, dvla etc. I didn't need to do anything else. I'm not sure if it's different if someone wants to double barrel their surname though. Hope that helps.

Again, agree with Jayne and Pink sparkle. One thing to note though is that everyone will only want to see the original and not a photocopy, however my doctors were happy with a photocopy but still wanted to see it.

We also found finding the DVLA form impossible in post offices, however you can order the form from DVLA and they send it in the post. I also included a pre paid and pre written signed envelope for the DVLA to return my marriage certificate in as post can be a bit sketchy around here.

That's very good to know, thank you Smiley smile

Our registry office have said that they'll do us a few copies of the certificate, rather than photocopies so hopefully that'll help

So I did all the bits the other ladys mentioned and changed my name at work and thought that was everything untill I received a letter from the tax office in my old name. I called them up and the lady took all my details and changed my name she said even if you change it at work you still have to call them.

I'm still debating going double-barrelled, although OH flat out refuses, so unfortunately we will have different surnames. But our registry office (Stockport) said that our marriage certificate is proof enough if I want to take his name, go double-barrelled, or even if he wants to take my name. We have ordered 3 extra certificates in case we have to send off original copies for DVLA, passport, etc. They were only £4 if we ordered them up front, but apparently quite a bit more expensive if we order them later.

Last time i just did a standard letter advising change of name by marriage. Added a different reference number applicable a to everyone. Sent toeveryone with a copy of the licence but yes you have to advise the tax office direct. If i remember right the passport office might have been the only one who wanted an original. Might be Wrong, was a long time ago.
