Name changing....

brideseekingblush, 3 August, 2010 at 14:04 Posted on Planning 0 10

Well, all along I have said that I would keep my maiden name for work. I work in lobbying where it's quite important for people to know who you are...But this is my first day back and it just FEELS SO WRONG seeing my maiden name....

Does anyone have any thoughts? Any of the OMs kept their maiden names? Am I just being silly?

I'll be keeping my maiden name at work. So much easier than having to inform everyone of email address change, new business cards etc.

Plus, I am feeling quite nostalgic re my maiden name so will be nice to 'keep it'!

I have told OH I will change my name when I start a new job.

My current job email / contact system relies on you typing the persons last name and I don't want no one to be able to reach me. Our HR officer changed her last name and now no-one knows who to email.

I would say it depends. My friends who work in scince have kept thier names for publication reasons. My friends who travel with work are changing theirs so there are less problems with docs in different names.

The advice I was given is do one or the other - either keep your name everywhere or change it at work. One lady here tried the husbands name socialy, maiden at work thing, but it fell apart when booking travel, and when the nursery phoned up asking for "Mrs HisLast" only to be told no-one of that name worked here. After she missed a few urgent calls about her kids, she changed at work as well.

Why not go double barrelled for work then!?? It would keep a bit of the old you, but at the same time, the work people will also know you've got married! If in a few years time you fade out the maiden name then you can!!

I still have my maiden name, and it's a bit weird but ok all the same I think. I didn't want to change my name, and also I have publications in my maiden name, so have decided to keep it (for work and for other stuff). It helps that quite a few people I know have kept their maiden names ?

Informally, I don't mind though if I'm called by his name, but I won't be changing anything officially.

OH has a very normal, maybe even a little boring, surname... I have spent 25 years as a not-exactly-skinny-minny with the surname Chubb.

What do you think I'll be doing? ? ?

Have to keep mine for scientific publication reasons at work, but I'll be changing it for everything else. Especially since I dont like my maiden name and his is Salvatore which is MUCH better!!

Only thing I thought was, what happen with pay cheques etc?? If you bank is in your married name and your pay cheque in your maiden name couldnt this cause all sorts of problems??

Yeah, I think his can cause problems! We have a cheque addressed to "Mr and Mrs R" and I couldn't pay it into my account (even with my marriage certificate as proof!) so think we'll have to open a joint account in his name just for this reason. Confusing ?
